The whole SCO angle has been used and abused by both sides. Most script kiddies and run-of-the-mill virus writers have no interest in ideology, and this itself was a big clue. Virus writers that work for Spammers will often try to obviscate the true purpose of the virus. What amazes me is that with any run-of-the-mill internet conx, anyone can set up a mail server and serve up a few million spams before anyone gets a clue, so I'm not sure why Spammers really need open relays and fake email addys. Hell, a pocket full of free AOL discs, and the world is yours.
When I was about 10 (that would be about 30 years ago), my dad wrote me and my sis a short little book called "The Idiot's Manual to FORTRAN" (VW reference for those of you into classic cars) to help us get started writing code on his (we, not *his*) PDP-11 (state-of-the art, in the day... Lots of little flashing lights and switches).
Considering that it is not at all necessary to have "free" email accounts to spam (I worked for IEG, I know these things), I'm not sure this story isn't bogus. No serious porn outfit needs to worry about these issues. What isn't contracted out to people who are perfectly able to set up a mail server on a DSL line, don't need to because the truth is when you rent 3 OC-3 conx, your telecom supplier really doesn't care because they like the $$$ that kind of service brings in.
One of the things that people miss about this story is that up here in Microsoft Country, it is sacrilege to question Microsoft. When I saw this story in my morning paper, I was very surprised, as the local reporters rarely bite the hand that greases the local palms in many ways. When it comes to Microsoft (and Boeing), the Seattle PI and Times are not normally independent thinkers.
Of course, SCO knows full well that they will never have to pay it, since they commisioned the virus from one (only?) of their developers.
[/tinfoil hat]
Seriously, this is just more from the SCO FUD machine, in light of their inability to supply IBM with the documents as directed by the Court. Look for this to become an excuse at the next hearing as to why they still can't come up with the goods.
No, it doesn't. And explain that to the judge when you go down.
I looked over the outside of my DVD cases and I have yet to see ONE DVD out of my collection of 100+ that has ANY MENTION of this mythical agreement.Bullshit.
Not a single DVD I have can even claim the "clickwrap" license software has, as the ONLY notice on the DVD itself is that I am not permitted to distribute copies of it or use it in a public showing, and I am not required to agree to this notice in order to proceed with my usage of the DVD.
And more bullshit...
So, in the absense [sic] of notifying me of this agreement, the manufacturers of the DVD cannot legally claim I have entered into this agreement. The purchase of every one of those DVDs was made and completed unconditionally.
Do you argue with cops too? Learn to stop talking before you shove your head so far up your ass you can never get it out.
Yes, but when you buy the right to use something under certain conditions, then you have the right to use it under those conditions. Your ignorence of the purchase agreement does not mean you are not bound by that agreement.
Thats the kind of stuff the RIAA and MPAA want us to believe. When we buy something we BUY something. Screw you and your "enter into a contract" BS.
No one forces you to purchase mass produced music or videos. No one forces you to eat things you don't want to eat. If you don't like the deal that goes along with purchaseing mass produced music and video, don't buy them.
When I buy something, I do NOT enter into a contract. You are right; no one has forced me into an agreement. THERE ISN'T ONE.
WRONG! Just because you choose to be ignorent of the fact that when you purchase and play a DVD you are agreeing to certain things, does not mean it is not so. You choose to ignore these things like it will make them go away. But that is not the way it works in the real world.
When you sign a "contract", then you enter into what is called a "contract". When you "buy" something, then it's yours to do with as you please, within the bounds of applicable laws.
Bullshit. Read the user agreement on the DVD, and don't be so ignorent of copyright law.
What is OK is for me to be able to use a copy of data I've purchased as I see fit for personal use, not in ways the provider chooses to restrict me.
When you buy something, you enter into what is called a contract. No one forces you to enter into this agreement, but when you do, you are bound by it.
If you disagree with their conclusions (and want to do something other than whine about the attitudes of Slashdotters like yourself), you should explain your reasoning to the legislative body of the Norwegian government and the Motion Picture Association of America (which prompted this legal action.)
I've decided that I choose to shit in front of your bedroom door. Don't worry, you can step over it, it doesn't infringe on your rights. By the way, since you are feeling quite socialist at the moment, will you work for me for FREE?
It's OK to bash MS over issues like bundling and integration, but saying that WMP is crap only shows you to be biased. Windows Media Player is actually a very good app. Hate Microsoft all you want, but be honest about WMP.
...will eventually be targeted towards applications such as military uses...Actually, when the wonks that own this technology max out on the Military contracts, expect to see it at Best Buy for a whole lot cheaper.
So really, what everyone here is saying, is that it's OK to crack proprietary code ("code must be free"), steal copyrighted works ("music must be free") and get away with it. Aperently most of you still live at home (like DVD Jon) and don't directly have to pay bills, except for maybe your stash and some Dew now and then.
FOR SHAME! I can not believe that ANYONE here would even CONSIDER doing something like this. I am SHOCKED! Simply SHOCKED! al queda SHOCKED, I say. Communist conspiracy It is unimaginable that a true Open Source advocate would do something like this, I am simply SHOCKED! Fidel Castro SHOCKED, I am. This really undermines the intergety of the whole movement RMS picking fleas out of his beard and everything we stand for. SHOCKED is not a strong enough word for this dastardly dead, and I know that nobody here at Slashdot would ever do anything like this everyone and their bastard brother. This is just a SHOCKING thing, and I for one, am SHOCKED! Whoever has done this bad thing that truly SHOCKS me your sister, needs to sit down and take a long hard look at them selves Che Guevara. SHOCKED! I simply do NOT believe that any true Open Source advocate everyone on the planet would do something like this. I am SHOCKED!
This is an interesting case, and should be of interest to SCO watchers too, not because of the patent implications (which are great for true innovation, and a wake-up call to the Patent Office), but spotlights companies who are not built around innovation, but rather litigation, and how this is a perversion of the patent system.

You'll make a fine /. editor!
Sure, OK, fine. You must be reading a different Seattle PI and Times than I do (every morning, 7 days a week, first page to last, actually...).
They may look at a "few hundred" a day, but they don't publish "hundreds" a day.
By the way, sleeping with a Slashdot ed, are you?
I'm going to patent a method of manually stimulating the male organ to orgasm. And watch out, I have lawyers.

Oh come on, this is Slashdot, home of the sheep hurd.
they don't sell Mountain Dew in Norway...Bet they do... Mountain Dew sponsors snowboarding teams from Norway...

So really, what you're saying is that "DVD Jon" deserved to be sued for trying to watch a DVD he bought
You and I both know that "DVD Jon" was perfectly able to view his DVD under the spacifics of the agreement he agreed to when he purchased the DVD.
Come on. Less bullshit, more facts.

IANAL (god I hate these kinds of aconymns), but can copanies that paid on these patents get their money back?
