Is the "so what" factor lost on anybody? If I stand in one spot and move slightly, snapping a shot each time I twitch, I bet I can photoshop it all together an top this. But really, who cares? It's NOT one picture taken with some fabulous technology; it's just a some art piece.
Slash "editors" don't give a crap about accuracy. Make it sound tasty in a leftist sort of way, link it to a story on any web site not hosted with GeoCities, profit!
Had Hemos done much looking into of this story, a more accurate and indeed interesting write-up would have been presented to the Slash readers.
Funny thing, the parent has been modded "flamebait" (which it is), but the truth is that in the world of well paying IT jobs, the truth is... that not many enterprises do use Open SOurce enough to hire Open Source specialists. Mostly, they just go for the guy who knows C++ and Java, and has... an MCSE.
Gee, it's not good enough for you! You want The World! Hell, it's only good for house to house! And as everyone knows, only old geesers in their workshops use land line anymore!
Good lord, get a grip! Anyway, if it's not "good enough" for you, I guess you will not be using it! But if they offered it in my area, where as an "old geezer" I own a house, I might just use it!
Oh. Yes. I see. Well then. SUre the warrent was served to Rackspace, but question: Was it Indymedia's server? Did they own it or rent it?
Actuall, it's a good question: If it was a leased server, what rights to the content does Indymedia actually have?
I have a hard time believing that Siemens or IBM would touch or allow their employees to touch this with a ten-foot pole.
I see what you are saying. I don't buy the statement.
Well, Shamsuddoha Ranju, who owns the domain for the web site is not even in the US. So perhaps he really doesn't care one way or another about US copyrights? Software has got to be free, you know.
It's nice that Off The Shelf boxes like Apple and Intel can make a super computer cluster. When do the stories stop? We know that if you put enough PCs together, you get a very powerful machine. What we should be looking at is cutting edge technology in specialized CPUs. Give me 10,000 vanilla boxes and some good custom software, but give me a cutting edge CPU designed for super computing, that's science. We already know that it is possible to fill a fucking building with Pentiums, or better 68000s.
You people obviously have no life. While there are several other high volume stories on Slashdot, such as "Alien Beings Buy Technology At Best Buy" and "Linux in the Bathroom", instead you choose to discuss the latest Trustix release. You obviously are not interested in being invited to Taco's Insiders Cocktail Party, where the chicks are loose and know C++ syntax. I'm typing right now from Taco's penthouse, where the booze is flowing and the only laptops that are connected are PowerBooks, because for some reason the Gentoo isn't liking the network. Oh baby, I have never seen so much leather... Pic to be posted on my Blog soon (really, I am a journalist!). Jesus, what is this? Bush Beer? Just let me piss in a can... Chill and serve.
Actually, I've never been to Best Buy, and prob. would not even walk in the door. I'm too cheap for them. Besides, I buy everything through my company store (Air Force). Very good prices.
Basically, I think what this means is: SHop at retailers you like. Don't like Best Buy? Don't shop there. Don't give them your money. But don't bitch about it! I don't shop at Amazon, I don't like them because they put small book sellers out of biz. If I need it by mail, I shop at Powells.com (If you have ever been to Powell's Technical Books in Portland, it's just ORGASMIC).
Best Buy has learned that some people are cheap, and not worth it to them as customers. This is their right, they are in business to make money. I see no problems with this. It is the same as if you have some items you want to sell, you want as much as you can get, you're not giving your stuff away, you're selling it because you want money. No problems. Cheap people are cheap in many ways, they seem to think they should get something at $1 over cost for some reason. Would you put up with people like this at your garage sale? If you are a freelance contractor, don't you want as much as you can get for your services? Don't you hate cheap employers who will not pay you enough to make working for them worth your while? Best Buy is no different. It's a business that exists to make money.
If the store has nothing to offer me for their higher price then why shouldn't I buy off the net instead of local. I buy local because I EXPECT them to take a reasonable return (resaleable condition) if I find for some reason that what I purchased doesn't fit my needs.
Yes, and no.
You should have a reasonable idea that the item you buy is near what you want. If you buy a $60 computer book, take the time to flip through it first. You should not be able to buy it, read it, and return it. Go sell it for used to a used bookstore if you want to recouver some of your investment. When I buy a NEW book, I want a NEW book, not one that some cheap-assed fucker has flipped through, bent the spine, whatever. Books are like anything else, the second they walk out the dook, their value goes down.
Should I be able to return a work of fiction because I don't like the story? What about electronics? I take it home and open the factory sealed box and plug it in, I don't like it so I take it back. BUT IT IS NOT NEW ANYMORE, how can it be sold for the same price I paid? It can't and the retailer takes the loss. THIS IS NOT RIGHT.
A retailer is obligated to allow a customer to return an item that does not meet it's intended purpose for purchase for any reason not disclaimed at the time of purchase, so long as it's done within a reasonable time period that is openly posted somewhere within the store.
This is hogwash. A retailer is required to accept returns of things that are broken.
You sound like a scammer who might buy a $60 computer book, read it, and return it. Typical. Is that right? No. You are trying to get something over on the retailer, something for free. It's neither honest nor right. For some reason, you seem to think retailers OWE you something, when in fact they owe you nothing. You are the kind of customer that gives customers a bad name. Go shop (steal) someplace else.
People, blame the machines all you want. But the truth is, GWB won the election by a wide margin. It's very sad, but there is a truth in this. Here's what my dad told me on Wed. morning: America is going down. Religious morons in the hick states are
multiplying like rats. In 50 years the US will be a 3rd world country. If I weren't rooted here I would consider Canada or Italy.
The problem with your statement is that the majority of people that vote, both Dem and Republican, have very little clue about what their party leaders actually stand for.
As to our energy demands, if we continue as we have in the past and are now, we MUST switch to nuclear energy, or face destroying the environment with the pollution from fossil fuels. It's as simple as that.
About the Bush re-election: America is going down. Religious morons in the hick states are multiplying like rats. In 50 years the US will be a 3rd world country. If I weren't rooted here I would consider Canada or Italy.
The weight and complexity of most Adobe apps (they make more than PDF software and Photoshop) do not make most Adobe apps candidates for Wine and its friends. But they are missing the boat when they say that they see no market yet for porting their apps to Linux, many shops would move than direction if it where available. Most of the professional users of Adobe pre-press and web stuff like the Mac OS, not Windows. Linux would be an easy sell to this crowd.
I wouldn't worry too much about it. You are running a server running Fedora Core 3??? Same server as your DB and mail server? Your customers will not be able to get to the control panel.
If you must have Red Hat (and there are good reasons why this is a good choice for you), RHEL3 or as a min, RH9, would be the way to go. Fedora Core 3? Are you INSAIN?
Is the "so what" factor lost on anybody? If I stand in one spot and move slightly, snapping a shot each time I twitch, I bet I can photoshop it all together an top this. But really, who cares? It's NOT one picture taken with some fabulous technology; it's just a some art piece.

Oh! Sorry! You ARE a teen aged ass!

It's a Windows only service. But look at it this way: Good use for an old P-3 box. Use your Linux box for real cutting edge apps!
Gee, it's not good enough for you! You want The World! Hell, it's only good for house to house! And as everyone knows, only old geesers in their workshops use land line anymore! Yes, but the EFF *is not* Indymedia. Has *Indymedia* asked for the papers to be unsealed?
He is in Bangladesh. Not yet part of the American Empire.

There WAS "talk" about the cap a month or two ago, but agreement was never reached.
