From what we now know about his personal, er, proclivities, J. Edgar Hoover would (have) want (wanted) YOU to give HIM a hard time... But he's dead, you know.
A lot of comments here seem to be bashing Comcast for getting rid of TechTV with various sinister reasons behind the show's demise, but I also a significant number of "haven't watched it in 5 months, if ever" type of comments too. Could it be that TechTV had really low ratings and wasn't cost-effective to keep going? Naa...
You didn't like the Matrix, Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, Austin Powers, Sopranos, Terminator, Last Samurai, Friends, West Wing, ER, Sports Illustrated, Kid Rock...
No, sorry, didn't see any of them. Over-hyped films, over-hyped TV, over-hyped mags, over-hyped music. Pull the corporate IV out of your arm and live.
The SCO Group laid off a "small" number of employees late last week as part of an effort to make its Unix products group profitable
If laying of a "few" people can turn SCO "profitable", man, that's one sad company. I think the most interesting part will be to see exactly what departments got the ax. We all know they don't need any programmers there anymore except as "token", as in "See, we still have a technical staff" bullshit.
Here's the key to this madness: Lot's of BAD BAD things happen to SCO when the stock stays below $10-something for more than 20 consecutive days. This is about to happen on Friday. Before that, you can expect an all-out effort by SCO to drive it up, if only for one thin second. For more about this, read Groklaw.
SCOX has dropped over the last year to around 6.40, where it will stay untill it completes it's nose dive, with the exception of minor ups and downs and the occasional attempt by SCO and it's backers to bring it up. It goes up all the time, but never by much, and then drops right back down.
I think a lot of libraries might be afraid to move from a known (but evil) system (Windows) to an unknown system. A solution might be to entice them with a one or two machine install as a test base.
Last week, Red Hat announced that it would no longer support Red Hat Linux 9. Instead, it is directing all users to its Red Hat Enterprise Linux Platform.
Ahhh yes, but there is still Fedora... Speaking of RH Enterprise, can the source be downloaded for free? I don't know *anything* about the GPL really, but doesn't RHEL have GPL'd software in it (like the kernel)?
And it's pretty clear that Microsoft's Steve Vamos misunderstands (or more likely wants to obfuscate) what Open Source is. He wants you to think that because companies like Red Hat and SuSE market value added services and products that compliment their Linux distributions, that Linux is not free. Hmm... I downloaded RH9 and it didn't cost me a cent...
People won't change to Linux because of the nerd-factor involved.
This is kind of ironic if you think about it, but average non-tech people will not take Linux seriously until game companies start releasing top titles for Linux. Which of course means video card companies have to start doing a better job of card drivers and smooth driver install. The fact that so much of getting a Linux install to work requires being computer literate does not work in Linuxs' favor as far as wide-spread acceptance with non-tech types.
what was the FUD about Linux NOT being open source!?
This all relates to the SCO issue which is two-fold: SCO claims that Linux contains proprietary code, and second, that the GPL is invalid (they say unconstitutional!!!).
So you agree with Microsoft that these people that are paying Hotmail to SPAM you are not actually spammers? You agree that they are "marketers"? IronPort is facilitating Microsoft in allowing these "marketers" to spam you. That's spam prevention???
Since when did DeVry have a "surprising reputation"
Modded "flamebait" but it's a good point. DeVry, ITT Tech, Phoenix U and so on have questionable standards. Why? Because their main purpose is to separate students from money, not teaching. I think that even a more or less unknown state college is better, at least their mandate is to teach, not separate money from the marks. The parent also mentions that he thinks these schools primarily teach management, and that is certainly true of Phoenix, who's primary clientele is management looking for the coveted Masters so as to be able to move on to tenured PHB status.
Screaming back at them seems less than useful, however a slap in the face it may be.
On the face of it, that's a good assumption. But in REALITY, you need to do whatever you have to to get basic information like WHERE ARE YOU? Sometimes people need a jolt to calm down.
Call and ask. I have "next to nothing" service and get it fine.

Next thing you know, Slashdot, the bastion of rational and unbiased news for nerds will accept ads!
Typical. Fail to follow the sheep, time for slauter.
Yes, there is a double standard.
Holy cow. Are you chained to a monitor that displays only Slashdot? Got way too much time on your hands? Are you a spelling Nazi too?
Sorry, all this just sounds like wayyyyy to much Star Trek. Or too much herb...
Ahhhh! The day SCOX drops below $1 and gets delisted!

With heavy pressure on current clients. Next step: send some muscle over to "take care of things." Hey Vito, got a job for ya...

In my opinion, it is almost as if The SCO Group's business model is to generate a revenue stream through litigation.
Hasn't SCO said this? I don't think it's "opinion" or "almost if". I believe SCO said this, but if they didn't, their invester BayStar certainly did.

"How AOL / Time-Warner came to be..." Uggg! I'd rather read about how AOLTW accidentally got flushed down the toilet, to be lost FOREVER!
Damn, I went to the wrong school! CS majors getting laid for homework! Damn... Damn...
