By the way, I do not use a GUI, I am strictly command line with my *nix boxes (that's more than one). But I don't expect that the average computer user will want to edit text in vi or even pico, read their email that way... Manage their 'puter that way. Some people LIKE a GUI, why make them feel like second class Linux users?

Ah, but many many mor people than not *do* use fonts. Happy with command line? Fine, no one is stopping you. But you don't represent 70 or 80% of the other computer users who do use fonts and do like a nice standardized user interface experience.

But there is one more thing: Embrace the idea of a good standardized user interface for Linux, or quit your bitching about Microsoft /Windows dominence. A good GUI, a good standard installer that handles dependencies with little or no user interaction, and decent usable applications, this is what Linux needs to gain the desktop. Otherwise, enjoy your Microsoft, it'll be here to stay.

May you be modded down for using old and tired humor you insensitive clod. And by the way, you can buy a perfectly adequate 486 Linux box at Goodwill for $50. You see, Linux does not require the same resources as Windows. Now go out and get a cheap box, and download some ISO, and run a dedicated Linux box along side your Widows resource hog. Tie the two up with Samba, simmer for a few days, and enjoy with a nice American pilsner.

I'm sorry, I see no reason at all to have Linux on Windows. I just see no good reasons at all, just bad ones. WHY? I mean, the other way around Samba does everything I need between Linux and Windows.

Sorry, but this sort of thing IS NOT going to draw more people to Linux, if that's what you're thinking. This "try it befor you buy" shit is nonsence (the same reason I have nothing good to say about these bootable Foux-Linux distros). Pick one per box. Have two boxes if you must. But the reality is that Linux is not Windows, Windows is not Linux, the two do not meet except by Wine and Samba. If you need both, you need two boxes.

Which is why we should tariff the import of intellectual property. Businesses want their intellectual property protected just as if it were actual physical property (DMCA, copyright law, patent law, etc), but they import intellectual property in the form of code, legal advice, chemical formulas, genetics research, etc, into the country without paying any value-based tariff.

Bingo! It's a double standard. IP is now an imported product just like everything else we consume. We as a nation (and I understand that not all Slashdot readers are from the USA) need to look out for and support our "middle class". If this means making it cost more to "outsource" and thus keep more jobs here, it's something we need to do.

Yeah. Gator. It's Spam. But from the standpoint of an investor, it's probably a great investment. Remember, Wall Street is about money not social good or bad. This is part of a more complex and disturbing trend of a total conversion of the Internet from a tool of the masses for usful communication, to a commercial product. And, it's an example of how western nations, especially the United States, think that they "own" the internet. This is why I support the idea of taking the Internet away from ICANN, and placing it under UN juristiction.
