SonicBlue is in a couple of fights: they're fighting Tivo, Microsoft & Dish Network (who likely soon will be a DBS monopoly in the USA) for PVR marketshare, and they're up against MPAA and the networks for the Replay 4K.
So far, they seem to be on the side of the angels in all the fights they're in. Don't begrudge them a badly needed weapon.
Try 'Sky Sports News' sometime (it's on Fox Sports World here in the USA).
The damn thing has four frames going simultaneously: a steadily updating table of soccer league results down the right edge; a scroller across the middle with random results; a big blue box at the bottom with apparently utterly random crap being displayed a letter at a time in pseudo-typewriter style; and a talking head squeezed into the top left corner. It's shockingly distracting.
I attempted to mod this as offtopic; slashdot had a tizzy and decided I'd chosen 'underrated' (which I can assure you I didn't). Fortunately, posting this content-free message should at least undo the moderation damage.
A coredump when fprintf is passed a char * instead of a FILE * in arg1 and an int instead of a char * in arg 2 (assuming you bullied it past the compiler by disabling warnings, that is)?
I suppose this is probably a troll, but since it got modded up as 'interesting', I feel compelled to point out that the article says nothing about Intel discontinuing any line of processors.
Unless you are somehow under the impression that a digital camera competes directly with 16-bit microcontrollers for consumer dollars, I really con't find even a tiny modicum of sense in this comment.
TiVo doesn't have a subscription cost either if you choose to pay the 'lifetime subscription' free (which, oddly enough, brings the total cost of the TiVo unit up to almost exactly the cost of a 'subscription free' ReplayTV).
Do you suppose that when you pay the 'lifetime subscription' fee TiVo turns on the top-secret anal-probe privacy-invading feature on your box?
Because apparently you believe there are only two possible business models: monthly payments or screwing your customers while hoping they don't find out.
Apparently I must add more spew here in order to pass the postercomment compression filter. I hope you have enjoyed reading it every bit as much as I have enjoyed writing it.
``It's less intrusive than the pop-unders. It's not creating a new window and it gives the consumer a choice. They can click it and go to the story,'' said Jupiter Media Metrix analyst Marissa Gluck.
And the other choice, presumably, is to utter a hearty "fuck you" and never go back to salon.com again?
Panasonic already makes a TiVo competitor, the Showstopper (which is a re-badged ReplayTV).
I obviously don't know the terms of their agreement with Replay (now SonicBlue), but if they want PVR functionality, they have an existing partnership...

As a former joe fan, I must suggest you check out Jed.
Unlike joe, it is being actively developed and supported, has readable source (while I like joe, have you ever looked at the source? The medication is helping, but I still twitch occasionally...), runs on Windows (yeah, sometimes I have to work on a Windows box and it's really nice to be able to have my editor of choice), and has both console and X/Win32 GUI versions.
Unlike emacs, it's relatively small & fast (though admittedly bigger & slower than joe); unlike vi, it's useful.
Of course slide rules can add. Everything they do is addition (*); it just happens that if you do addition using a log scale, the net result is multiplication.
If you use a linear scale (which any decent slide rule had), addition is... addition.
(*) or simple table lookup; typically you'd have a few trig tables to play with as well.
Turn based WWII tactical action, sold only via the web, amazingly well supported. They single-handedly dragged serious wargaming from the '70s into the '90s.
Now if only someone would notice that it's the 21st century...
... then you need to read The Anthropic Cosmological Principle, a serious and fascinating discussion of the question of why our universe is the way it is; whether or not you agree with the authors' conclusions, it will at least give you the necessary tools to think further about it. Sort of like James Morrow does for Christian theology. Though not as funny.
Patents are a weapon.

Five years ago, the idea of people downloading fifty whole meg of MP3s to listen an album probably seemed pretty damn funny too.

Hmmm, bait! Yummy!
I'd implement Combat Mission.
Fortunately, it's already been done for me.

Oh, they still make 'em, deadly or not. God bless the British.
In other words, they're running the risk of pissing off one of their major advertisers.
Yes, this *is* a bold stand, actually.

Skepticism is good. Paranioa is bad. Grow clue.
One word: HAVi.

Well, if you're in Salt Lake City and you like radio without commercials, then listen to KRCL.
Of course, if you'd prefer to pay XM $10 a month for the privledge, don't let me stop you.
I'm color-blind, and this scheme still hurts.
I think my retinas are bleeding now.
The large mega-corp I work recently laid off a big chunk of its workforce.
Within the area of the company I know about, every fulltime telecommuter was laid off, without exception.
Given the current state of the economy and the likelihood of layoffs wherever you work, you may wish to consider this.

Suprised nobody has pointed out
Combat Mission.

You want HAVi.
So do I.
Sometimes once the revolution is over, perfectly good revolutionaries become an embarrasment.
RMS had better start watching out for icepicks.
Total cost for TiVo or Replay unit: $300 - $500 depending on how carefully you shop.
Total cost for your solution: probably close to $1000. Or more.
Programming/setup for TiVo/Replay: 1/2 hour.
Programming/setup for your solution: I shudder to think.
Reliability of TiVo's Linux based or Replay's VXWorks-based systems: excellent.
Reliability of your Win9x based solution: need I say more?
So, you are proposing a more expensive, less convenient, less reliable solution.
Brilliant plan, that.
If you have two years of a BS under your belt and you "cannot demonstrate expertise in a language" there are two possibilities:
1: you have entirely the wrong idea about what constitutes expertise.
2: you have a promising career as a short order cook to look forward to.
If it's 1, then go forth and lie your ass off through a few interviews. The job you get will probably suck, but it's resume fodder.
If it's 2, go get sized for your apron and stop wasting money paying for college.
