Oh come on! If you are on a plan that lousy you've only got yourself to blame. If you look away from Telstra there are plenty of other ISPs that are much better value!
My ISP (iiNet) has a minimum speed of 1500k/256k and depending on your exchange a maximum of 8000k/1000k. These plans are all the same price regardless of the speed you are able to get. I have a total of 80gb downloads a month (40gig peak+40gig off peak) and unlimited free access to certain services (most useful ones are the iiNet FTP and newsgroups).
If you are satisfied with your connection, then fine. But don't whinge about Telstra because they are far from the only option.
It's called portability...
The.NET framework is, in my mind, an excellent idea, so why not copy the best bits while leaving out the bad.
C# for example...
C# is a much faster implementation of (basically) Java, removing the loadtime of the JVM which everyone on/. seems to hate so much!
Couple this with the ability to use the right language for the job in all circumstances (for example "C# is overkill for this, lets use Perl instead) and I think that Mono a step in the right direction when it comes to ease of coding and portability.
The amount of dupes on this site is incredible. Not only did I read this story about a day before the original/. post on BoingBoing, now I get to read it again on/.
Slow news day huh?
Point taken, but for 1 way communication (them to us) and them having to be at the intellectual level for us to actually recieve their reply, a flash card system just might do the job.
with aliens that I can see is the flash-card method. Show a picture, and a word, with the word being either spoken or written.
Of course this method couldn't possibly work with aliens that don't see as we do, or for unfamiliar objects but the basic principle isn't much different than what would have been used when two new cultures met for the first time.
Being one of the only decent government agencies at the moment I'm sure the ACCC will be doing its best to fight this again.
Either that or the judge will just throw it out of court as its already been ruled upon.
That's Johnny Howard for you...
We give to the US, but they won't give back to us.
This is evidenced by the non-inclusion of sugar in the agreement.
Johnny: "Our farmers are in trouble. Sugar really needs to be in this agreement"
G.W: "Screw you Johnny"
Johnny: "Well ok then sounds good to me. Which way do you want it this time?"
I think what the article is saying is more about social engineering. If companies can teach employees not to fall for social engineering tactics then they can move onto easier to fix things like regularly changed passwords etc.
mmm...I wonder if in the near future (perhaps a year or so) the current generation of cards will have dropped in price enough that a set of them in SLI mode will have similar or better performance than the new cream of the crop at a much lower price.

Honestly, I don't see how consoles will EVER cause an end to PC gaming.
The fact that some games "just play better" on a PC combined with the slow release cycle of a console (let's just say on average about 5 years) means that eventually, towards the end of a consoles lifecycle, PCs will catch up and beat the crap out of them, just like they always had.
I remember 4 years ago my top-of-the-line PC was playing games far inferior in all round experience to my much cheaper Xbox console. But now the tides have turned and my mid range PC is now producing a much better experience.
Well at least they went to the trouble to make available some half-decent drivers for *nix systems. Its taken ATI a long time to get to the quality the Nvidia drivers have been for quite a while.
What do you want next? An open source CPU to go with your open source Motherboard and open source Video Card. I'm all for open source, but it doesn't have to be in everything and anything...
Stupid me forgot to mention that FirefoxIE is a step by step guide to making your Firefox look and feel just like Internet Explorer (except without all the crappy non standard rendering bugs).
At the bare minimum without the device driver's you should still get a bootable system. Sure you might be in a bit of a state (unable to connect to the internet etc.) That is what the generic drivers are for after all. This is certainly not a borked installation.
The only case I can see you having a borked installation would be maybe if you were running absolutely cutting edge technology (something brand spanking new that is totally incompatible with the latest version of Windows)
Even so, if the computer has had Windows installed on it once in its life (and most store bought comptuers have) it will at least boot with generic drivers. You could say the same about *nix systems too, as my experience has been that the OS will install, but with lots of generic drivers in place of the newish hardware in my boxes.

Safe! Pfft! If it ain't Carlton-United or Castlemaine Perkins it ain't safe! :P

Yeah, you've got a point there...
Fair enough...but then you have the problem of when one component goes, the whole system is a big steaming pile of dog turd...
another livecd....Now what am I supposed to do with the ten Ubuntu two-disc sets I got in the mail today.
According to a couple of the latest Slashdot headlines, "considering" is big news over here...
Thats already in development. Expect to see my prototype up on Sourceforge by next week.

...Or until that new Blaster 2.0 virus hits the streets...
Would be interested seeing this concept applied to Bangkok...

Or how about Firefoxie?
Err...how exactly do you bork a Windows installation these days? As long as u pick the right partition to install on its not really possible.
