Linux is definitely not UNIX, but it is very UNIX-like. Linux was written from scratch, and is not recognized as a UNIX by the open group (click).

My understanding is that unless someone wants to pony up money to have Linux reviewed, and potentially be certified as UNIX, it won't ever be a true UNIX. There are POSIX compliance tests, and lots of little standards that have to be implemented and be implemented correctly.

so, no. Linux is not UNIX.

I was in my dad's 1968 chrysler newport (HUGE car) and was driving 65 or so on cruise control. when i got into town the cruise wouldn't disengage and the 290hp motor was too much for the 4 wheel drum brakes to stop. for some reason the car would not go into neutral. i put the car through all the gears and my speed did not change. i cruised through town braking at about 50 and had a huge line of cops behind me by the time i got out of town, and when i finally got to a point of open road where i could think to switch off the ignition (i was 16, gimme a break) i was promptly thrown on the ground and handcuffed.

one of the officers didn't believe me when i said the cruise control stuck, and asked test the car himself, since it was the only way to prove to him that i wasn't purposely speeding. when he started the car again, cruise was still stuck, and the car was still stuck in gear, and VROOM 65mph. he spun around and hit a tree, steering column peirced his chest and killed him.

they kinda forgot about arresting me after that. cruise control sucks.

JPEG-2000 probably wasn't even considered because its not just about lossless images. There is a lot of data in a RAW image besides the image itself. The camera settings, the zoom, aperture, simulated film speed, time of day & date, shutter speed, and a lot of other information that isn't really translatable into human-visible imagery. It is the raw sensor data plus all of those things above and more.

The greatest advantage of photographing in RAW is that you can adjust the white balance long AFTER the image has been taken. My GF (at the time) took photos of an entire party (this was a paid gig) with the incorrect white balance, which would have effectively ruined the entire set if i'd had her shoot in JPEG (or even JPEG-2000), but since she shot in RAW we could easily adjust the white balance after.

JPEG-2000 simply couldn't work in that scenario.

the scrollbar is the real IE scroll bar but there's an invisible image on top of it. When you click and drag you're actually dragging this image onto a small square that follows the mouse cursor - you can't avoid dropping it into that small image.

the js code scrolls the page for you, instead of the actual scroll bar. since you're scrolling the page (via javascript) the real scroll bar reflects the new page position, making you think you actually were dragging the scroll bar.

as you learned, the code doesn't need to be executed to trip the anti-virus. oddly enough my corporate anti-virus didn't catch a thing (it didn't tell me it did anyway), and when i dropped, the empty .exe was installed.

I won't tell you where I work but I will tell you that its a place where you don't want viruses or spyware getting at the very personal data we have on 1:4 of you. You all opted-in for the data collection too. (very large insurance company) I will tell you that we're mandated to use IE and Outlook. that's VERY little. I CRAP about that much per year.

if you think that a small 10 megawatt reactor will produce enough waste to worry about even over the course of 30 years, i think you're mistaken. Besides, if its that encapsulated, if it was in need of waste removal, it would probably be something as simple as cartridge swap.

Since the Australian company designed and created the car and all of the toolwork to build that body style, it makes a lot of sense for them to be built there. and i won't even get into how horribly wrong the use of the word "branch" is here.
