I wouldn't say that its a not invented here attitude, but more the fact the developers take a large amount of pride in their little corner of the kernel, and its hard to take pride in someone else's work when all you've done is implemented it. It goes toward the general feeling that Linux is more haphazardly put together, touting the individual parts as strong points whereas in the *BSD's its the finished product thats held high as a source of pride. You end up with a 'I did this myself,' compared to a 'we created this with the best ideas out there.'

Ya because todays consumer is well informed about all issues surrounding the product they intend to purchase. Thats why OS/2 and Apple beat out the less then stellar offerings from Microsoft over the past decade.

    Hmmmm....

People buy what ever a company makes the most noise about. There are still people that you really have to slam their head against a wall to convince that an AMD processor isn't inferior to Intel, simply because they never hear of this 'AMD thing.' The only real reason to choose one over the other is the cost. That said, being a fan of either is just silly. Unless you run benchmarks that spit out numbers, which are meaningless in the real world, you will not be able to tell what a system is running. If I threw a AMD processor in a box and slapped an Intel Inside sticker on the front, 99 out of 100 people would tell me I'd get better performance from an AMD chip after they used it, the last person probably wouldn't care. You see an increase in performance in an AMD system because you expect to, not because it actually is so much better, since the differences in real performance are imperceptible.

They made movies like that in the '30's because thats what the people wanted, those 'cheesy' movies from that era were often well received as a good film. Trying to make 'cheesy' film that is supposed to have some sort of nostalgia to an era by making it how some people look at that era doesn't create a 'cheesy' movie, it make a steaming pile of crap. A movie maker in the '30's took their job seriously and tried to make something that would me memorable and entertaining, it seems to me that the director did not take the film seriously, that this Sky Captain will not be remembered and in a few weeks, most people will be ashamed to admit they watched it in the first place.

Of course it doesn't help that there are a number of people in the 'know' who will tell you that in order for windows to work you have to format and reinstall at least every 6 months.

As i recall, the sticker price of something in the UK is the total of the price of the item and VAT. Now if they lowered it so that the end user pays they same amount as somewhere else, that would mean that Apple would fit the bill for the VAT, in which case iTunes would probably just be pulled out of the UK. On the other hand, they could show the same cost across the EU and just tack on what ever local taxes when you pay it, in which case people would still be whining. Of course, they always will.

It breaks down to this, and I know that this is going to shock everyone, but the UK is its own country with its own tax structure. I know, its a earth shattering revelation, but when you add tax to a product its end cost goes up.

In Canada, just about everything costs more then in the States, should I be able to turn around and have a government force a company to change that so I pay the same amount as someone in the States, completely ignoring the fact that Canada has more taxes, a lower valued dollar, the fact that a lot is imported and whatnot? Before you start yammering about there's no customs by downloading, I still pay more to download something then I would if I were in the States.

Then only use slackware, debian, gentoo, fedora, suse or mandrake its not like you have to actually have to run every single one that exists. People make another distro because they want to, and they probably either learned a lot in the process, or enjoyed themselves. Like any open source project people have worked on, they were even kind enough to let others benefit from their hard work if they wanted to. They did it because they wanted to, or they felt that they had something to contribute so I doubt that they feel they wasted their time, and since it was there time to begin with what are you complaining about.

I can't see how SCO can hope to do any better in front of a jury,. SCO's lead counsels track record for high profile cases doesn't exactly inspire confidence in his ability to win trials.
