I used to like Mac until last week when working on a friends old iMac and found. It wouldn't upgrade to Tiger... It had to run older programs which you can't find. Seems Mac has taken a good OS (BSD) and crapped all over it. It fix this problem I loaded FC4 for PCC and the machine runs fine with all kinds of programs to use.
Mac may not be as bad as Windoze but they have their own flavor of "We're going to sell to you even if you don't want it."
I have set up several Linux machines for people over 80. They all love it. An hours worth of training and they are doing just fine. I used to get calls all the time about "My computer is doing this (fill in the blank). I haven't gotten a call in months now from any one them except to tell me how good there machine runs now.
Hating MS won't stop them from having 10 times more money then their competitors and in the end money controls everything in todays society.
Couldn't agree with you more.
This idea that you could sue MS for bundling IE with the OS is ridiculous unless you could prove that MS is somehow conspiring to profit off IE security exploits.
Well they will "SELL" you a product to fix their exploits. They also own stock in other companies that profit off of the selling of security software that protects you from a broken system. Seem to me if they have built a broken system it is up to them to fix it for free. When they find a flaw in a car design they have a recall and the car company HAS to fix it for free. They don't sell you the replacement part and the labor to install it.
Any program you bundle with an OS that offers any for of connectivity make the OS more vulnerable. I don't care if it's Apache or YIM, the OS is less secure anytime it runs a web browser or chat program or server.
True any program that connects to the outside world does have a level of threat. Still with Linux or Mac ONLY the user space is at risk NOT the whole operating system. If your so stupid that you are running under an admin account well you needed to get infected. When exploits are found in Linux and Mac systems the problem is fixed not covered up.
Can MS really be held to standards of network security that it itself has little control over. Is it really MS's fault that todays governments have little to no serious measures in place to combet cyber crime?
Yes they should be held to the standards of network security. This is the problem they completely ignore the simplest of network security standards. No they shouldn't have control over these standards. Standards in the engineering world are there for a reason. Would you want a builder that has more intrest in his profits than your safety have control over building standards? Lets see we'll just cahnge the load value standards and we can use cheaper materials and make more money. So what the building caves in.
As far as goverment control NO we don't need any more. If Windoze was more secure then there wouldn't be as big a problem with zombied machines. The root cause IS Microsoft's fault for a faulty product.
You could compare MS bundling IE with the OS to Ford making a car without proper seat belts, but the problem with most analogies that people will come up with is that there is no underground resistance to Ford which is constantly trying to undermine their vehicles safety. If Ford makes a defective product that risk peoples well being, sure you can sue them, but when you computer gets infected with a virus are you going to sue Norton ? When you hard drive fails because of less than perfect design will you due them also.
Well if Ford makes faulty seat belts then they HAVE to replace them at their expense. Ford and other manfactures of phyical products come under a differant set of rules in building thier product. EVERY time you click that OK on the EULA you have just given up your rights to a product without flaws. Ford on the other hand MUST adhere to the safety standards set up by the engineering assocations at set these standards. See Ford is bound by these standards. MS ingores them and can because you clicked the EULA!
Should we just all sue the US government for creating the internet in the first place and doing little to nothing to keep up with protocol security. TCP/IP is flawed and insecure, so where is the class action law suit against the US military or congress for not taking security measures to updates it's ancient protocol?
Don't know.. Should I sue the cops because I was either too lazy or too stupid to keep up with my keys so I removed the locks from my house and car ingition and my house got cleaned out and my car was stolen? By re
Safari is an application the "comes" with OSX. Much like FireFox or Mozilla "come" with distors of Linux. These are true applications and run only in the user space of the OS. They are NOT PART OF THE OS. To use MS's favorite line "Seamlessly intergrated into the Operating System." You cannot remove IE. IE makes API call DIRECTLY to the OS and the kernel. This and the fact that MS wants you to run as an Administrator is the root cause of over 90% of infection on a Windoze box.
With Mac OSX, Linux and all other UNIX based OSes the system is set up for users to run only in their user space (unless you are a complete idiot and your running as root). All user instructions that come with the OS with Mac or Linux tell you to NEVER run as root where MS automatically sets up a user account as Administrator since XP. (NT never did this) Half of all Windoze program MUST run under a Administrator account or will not work. Call tech support and what do they say? "Change your account to run under Administrator." "With security in mind." (yea my my ass)
There is a big difference between "comes with" and "built into". These are not the same thing. Your still a scum bag if you sell a shitty product and give out FUD and marketspeak to cover up you short commings in you product instead of fixing it!
The sad thing is they could fix their OS to be a decent and secure operating system and worth buying and using, but they would rather spread enough FUD around to keep you scared of trying something new and finding out there are better! products on the market.
In a statement calling the submission of documents a 'milestone,' Microsoft said it had completed the review and editing of some 100 documents, which number 8,500 pages."
I thought you weren't suppose to "edit" documents before you submitted them to the courts. Isn't this called evidence tampering?
An engineer I am a lawyer thank God I am not. Reading this BS got me wondering the same thing. I know for a fact the UNIX Services for Microsoft is built on top of BSD code. The Berkley copyright is all though that code. I have seen it. Seems like this could be used to stomp on Balmers balls some how.
Wars for oil, Lawsuits for money and control, Lies and cons from Marketing lackies, Election machines that are more crooked than a Maifa owned one arm bandit, When will the filty rich quit fu_king the common person. Or maybe its time for the common person to kick the shit of the filty rich. Seems that every I wake up their is another filty rich asshole trying to stick a dildo up my ass and take what little money and freedoms I have.
I don't know where they other guy got their numbers, but Spamhaus blocks better than 90% of the mail coming in our server. No we don't want 360's shit. Thank you Spamhaus keep up the good work!
People seem to forget. The US does this kind of thing all the time. Not only to other countries but to their own Citizens. Remember we have all those three letter agencies that do this sort of thing all the time. So what is good for the goose is it not good for the gander? Or is it like torture these days? We gasp and cry when we see someone get their head lopped off on TV, and say "What savages!" Still it is ok for us to torture people for weeks on end because we are the good guys so this is good torture. Who is the savage really? The person that quickly puts and end to the pain of the enemy by whacking off their head or the person that makes their enemy suffer for weeks without end?
You see I come from a group of people that was once "Branded" savages by the US goverment. One example that even lives up to today. We were savages for taking scalps of our enemies. The part that is ALWAYS left out is we only took scalps in revenge for taking the scalps of our women and children for $5.00 a scalp. Payable by the US Goverment. Funny how that part of history is left out and still scalping is always related back to Native Americans even today. "Scalp'm Braves"
So are the Chinese really the bad guys or are they protecting their own assests? We're trying to pick their pockets all the time so why is it so bad when they try to pick ours?
The simple truth for people and goverments is you can't run around beating up other people all the time. Sooner or later someone bigger and badder than you will finally get tired of your shit and your continued assaults against them and in defense will either gang up with the other guys you are beating up on or if big enough on their own will turn around and beat the shit out of you.
The solution is simple. Leave them alone and they will leave us alone. It is all "Cause and Effect" Don't be the "cause" and you won't feel the effect. You can't blame someone for taking a defensive position to your offenceive moves.
The same rule of "cause and effect" applies to networks. You choose to run Windows that can access sensetive areas then YOU are setting yourself up to get hacked. I find it strange that the NSA would build something as secure as SELinux and the rest of the goverment not use it. Maybe not strange just stupid. The point is they have the tools to lock everything down and if they don't well too bad should have bought a better lock for the front door.
Well Thomas Jefferson one of the Founding Fathers said. That when a goverment gains power over its people is is time to revolt.
The question should be. Who are the REAL terrorist in this country? When I think of terrorist I don't think of people from over there. I see the cop all dress in a black milatary uniform wearing a black ski mask and no badge showing carrying a automatic machine gun. I see the NSA agent tapped into this Internet connection reading this. (OH YEA HI! NSA). I see the President on TV saying oh torture is fine and we are too big and bad to go by the Genava Convention.
I am a Native American a Cherokee we have been terrorised for over 500 years by this very goverment. Over 6000 treaties have been entered into with Indian People and NOT ONE has been NOT been broken. So am I suprised to hear that now the Genava Convention has been thrown out the window? Not at all.
Is voting going to fix this? I think not. I think at all that read SlashDot know the game is rigged. The people in France di have the right idea, but getting the average Joe off his ass to do something, well if we have to depend on him we're screwed. Like someone said he is too busy watchinig American Idol.
Try ISPConfig. It is easy to use from a users stand point. Its secure and it is open source. The BIG plus is that it uses the OS's commands and scripts. It doesn't depend on its own properity scripts to preform operations. Is also fairly easy to convert over to.
WTF! you pay for support at Microsoft too. Call them and ask for help and see if they don't ask for a credit card number. With MS you pay for the OS. You pay for the applications, You pay for help. You pay when the tech shows up to remove the STD's you caught when you went on that date.
So what RedHat charges for support. They still give back a free product. What does MS give up for free? The bottom line is all of us that work in the business are in it to make money. Yours truly included. So is it so bad that ReadHat chanrges for support when you don't have to pay if you are willing to pick up a book and do it yourself. Or if you don't want to pay RedHat there are other companies that support RH products. You could hire them. At least you are getting something for your money. With MS you pay for LOUSEY support or you pay and get NO answer to your problem. (OH it a feature not a bug! Its more open and easier to use not less secure!) Like another poster said this is like dating a whore that is a lousy lay and has STD's to top it off.
Personally I don't need a date that bad.
Microsoft offers developers a platform where they can make money selling their software.
Big deal Open Source has developing platforms that don't cost money that you can develop your software to sell.
Besides a compnay with the right business model makes more profit offering great support to the public. There isn't enough profit margin to make any real money reselling MS products. The real profit is in support. Why all but about 12% of the money you sell MS products for go back to MS. Where support is labor and around 40% of this is straight profit. Lets face it this guys article is about how MS doesn't like a company like ours to give away a free product and make a profit selling support for that product. They lose and the customer and our company wins. Yes we support Open Source products. Yes we support Open Source OS's just as well as support for MS OS's. The support is the same the only differance is you PAY for the broken MS OS. It could even be the same person that comes out and puts in a new NIC card in your RedHat box and cleans the worms off of you XP machine. The hourly rate is even the same. So did you save any money using MS? Was it harder to get support for the RedHat machine? NO!
A customer calls. They need a new app to store and check out documents and they are thinking about SharePoint Portal Service. You show them. You PAY for Win2003 server. You PAY for the client license. You PAY for Share Point and you haven't even started on setting up the box yet. Then you pay for my time to set up and configure the machine. This doesn't include the fact I can't promise the box the box won't get hacked.
Or
You show them either Owl or Knowledge Tree both are a Open Source portal service. They pay for the machine (the same machne) and the time to set up and configure the software. The company I work for still makes the same amount of money basically. The customer has saved loads of money and the system is much more secure and stable. The customer still has an app that does the job. Who lost here?? Microsoft. They are the only loser and this is why articles such as this are written by their Lackies.
We maintain and co-locate servers for our customers at a flat rate a month. As Senior Engineer I look at the work orders at the end of each month. The work orders are catagorizes by work preformed and OS of the machine. We spend on an average 60% more time maintaining the Windows servers. The FC4 boxes they just sit there and run. Every time a tech puts their hands on a box we lose profit. So if a tech is in the Exchange server every day to tweek it of kick in in the ass to keep it running and doesn't have to touch the IMAP box except to add an account which is more profitable? Remember it is a flat rate on these machines. If the
I put the word in quotes for a reason in that the label "Islamofascist" is a marketing term developed by Rove and company
Dont we have ENOUGH "MarketSpeak"? MarketSpeak is just words made up by marketing companies such as Rove and Company to cover up the truth in a statement. Wether it be about software or politics. Just another way to tell a lie.
If your looking for fascists then just go to Washington and you will find all you want. If you don't believe that the Bush regime is not fascist then go check the history of Bush's Grandfather and Uncle during WW II. Find out who they were in bed with then. The family hasn't changed they are just in bed with a differant buch of assholes. Fascisum is a live and well and living in the US.
Fyodor I have the upmost respect for you and if you say she is smart and talented in the field of security then now I do believe that. Still if she walked into this office looking for a job it would then be me throwing the chair to run her out. No matter how smart she is she still signed off on ALL the problems there are with MS products. She is still partly to blame. She still played a part is stealing money from MS customers for the security holes in their system. She didn't stand up and say "Hell no I'm not signing off on that. Go back and fix it!"
Maybe she does have talent but where are her morals? We just don't hire on talent but also on morals and ethics. Morals and ethics and not just words for with the company I work for they are the back bone of the company. In other words we would rather lose money than rip off our customers by selling them something that will break at least once a week. When we have a security problem on our network we fix it and don't charge the customer extra for the fix. Our customers pay us for our talent, morals and ethincs. They pay us for our advice. We don't give bad advice glossed over by a bunch of MarketSpeak coming out of the mouth of some monkey dressed in a $900.00 suit.
Still one thing I can say thank you to the Security Team at MS and to Window for is due to continuing lack of security I have switched totally to Linux and will never go back. I have permently fixed my Windows security problems and also a lot of other people's Windows security problems. My fix? Insert disk 1 of Fedora and run the install.
As for you Fyodor THANK YOU! for the best port scanner ever devised!!!!
Personally after chasing this guys spam for so long. I am glad to hear that the guys in jail now have a new Bitch. I hope they wear that ass out! Ram him one time for me!
1. NEVER have your firewall on your server. The firewall should be a standalone box. NOT ISA either it can be cracked in less the thirty mins.
2. NEVER expose your AD to the outside world. If it is all on one box then your doing this.
3. NEVER directly expose your DB server to the outside world. Again if it is a all on one wonder you are doing this.
There really is a good reason for layered security and SBS breaks all those rules.
Come on and tell the truth. You expect me to believe that you maintain 30 - 35 server all running Exchange and you don't have problems? Dude I've maintained TOO many exchange servers to believe that one.
A good approach if they are that small and that broke is a good GPL firewall like a Smoothie on an old PC for a firewall. A Windows 2003 server (if you really got to have it) and hosting your mail with you IPS provider or some other outsourced mail provider. Like a lot of folks have pointed out when the SBS server dies your whole business stops! email, file sharing EVERYTHING! So number four is:
4. GrandPa said don't put all your eggs in one basket.
So if you are into do things right or don't do them at all. Then the above it the right thing and the SBS approach is totally wrong ask anyone that knows anything about network security. It looks good on paper especially with some glossy marketing material but you are setting yourself up for a fall.
IE is part of the OS. You can't take it out. Yes I know a stupid idea and the reason for all the security problems. The best cure I have found for Windoze problems is Fedora.
In 1972 I was on the "Internet" or what was to become the Internet. IT was called MILNET and during the time I was in the Navy the name was change to ARPANET and the schools came online.
The "Web" as everyone call it is NOT the Internet. The Web never was and is still not the Internet. The birthday everyone is talking about it when the Marketing people found that money could be made here and they came along a screwed up a good thing.
Maybe they can't ask BUT! they can sure run a background check and there it will be you arrest record, and it doesn't matter if you were right or wrong. You won't get the job. You have been arrested.
One problem with your comparsion. With Car companies a recall means they have to pay to fix the problem with the car. With MS YOU! have to pay for the patch to fix their flaws. Read the EULA they're (MS) not responisable for anything. Plus why should they fix their code when they and the "Partners" get rich selling you things to protect you from the holes in their OS?
Maybe one day the world will wake up and find out there are differant OSs that are better the Windoze.
I am sure that the person is. I think his point is as with me I perfer RedHat FC4. How do you buy that licenses? You don't. Last year I bought a laptop from Linuxcertified.com (GREAT LAPTOP!) The offered FC3 for free but would load RHL3 or SuSE for the price on the licenses. Your choice. Isn't that what you should have a choice?
So what. The election is rigged.
Mac may not be as bad as Windoze but they have their own flavor of "We're going to sell to you even if you don't want it."

If the
Dont we have ENOUGH "MarketSpeak"?
The "Web" as everyone call it is NOT the Internet. The Web never was and is still not the Internet. The birthday everyone is talking about it when the Marketing people found that money could be made here and they came along a screwed up a good thing.
There is a lot more to it than a Big Blue "E".
Maybe they can't ask BUT! they can sure run a background check and there it will be you arrest record, and it doesn't matter if you were right or wrong. You won't get the job. You have been arrested.
