I go to the movie theater to watch the movie on a huge screen with great audio. If I didn't care that much about the huge screen/great audio, I'd just wait and rent it from the local video store. Plus, I don't think its right advocating piracy against the movie theaters (unless they keep jacking up their already insane prices).
hey, if i can run all my Windows programs (WinAmp, Netscape, et al) I will. That, and GiMP will soon make me a convert. But, for now, I'll stick with Windows. (My ethernet card isn't supported by Linux, and I'm too lazy to do anything about it. But when my laptop arrives...)
data cds are 650 megabytes... that extra 70 megabytes are used as a buffer. if you have a glitch in an audio cd, maybe you have an audible distortion in a song. if you have a glitch in a data cd, its all corrupted...
over here in New York State, we have EZ Pass for use on the Thruway. Essentially instead of you paying tolls while you drive on the Thruway, it bills your credit card.
the scary thing is that these EZ Pass devices don't simply (passively) reflect the waves sent to them, but they actively send waves. on some episode of Law & Order, the Police managed to track down a suspect by tracing his EZ Pass
Of course, NY claims that they won't use it to track people down (or give people speeding tickets, because if they reached Toll Booth B, which is 30 miles away from Toll Booth A in 20 minutes, and the Speed Limit is 55....) but I'm not so sure I can believe them.
Those percentages (crude as they are:) )don't work for the World, they work pretty much only for the States. I'm sure that the vast majority of, say, India or Africa doesn't listen to music that comes from the major record labels. Thats what, 1.5 Billion people right there? Just a thought.

SDMI as Dead As DivX

... and because people's oh-so-old CD players won't be able to play the new format, they'll be less likely to adapt to SDMI.
People ask around if they should buy the newest product. "I shouldn't buy Divx? Because it could violate my privacy? Alright" will turn into "I shouldn't get SDMI? Because I'll have to change my portable CD player, the car CD player, the home theater CD player, all for no good reason?"
For those of us that aren't as well attuned to music to differentiate a 160 kb/sec MP3 and a CD, or those of us who just want some background music for when they're on the computer, MP3 works well enough.
I sure as hell can't tell the difference, so i'll stick it to The Man by getting pirated MP3s instead of paying $17 for a CD (and we all know how much of that money goes to the band.)
VQF is a propriety format, created by Yamaha. Anyways, it had better sound quality for treble, and 25% smaller files, (i dont know about how long it took to compress), but it was deemed as "too little, too late."
It's what Minidisc is to CDs (at least here in the states) -- People just say "Hey, I just converted my stuff to MP3s(/CDs), why am I going to change to VQF(/MD)?"
The business models of "give away the phone, sell the service" and its offshoots are certainly viable for the cellular phone market -- you have no real point in having a phone you can't use. but to adapt this for music? i, and many other people i know, have yet to purchase a shirt with a band's name on it.
I don't think it would have as much of an effect on Microsoft's marketing machine if they were "good guys" than what they're doing. With this, they get the publicity (immaturely, but still) and companies are more likely to go, "hey microsoft, how come your little windows deal doesn't stand up to this? we're switching to linux, thanks." ..................................@ @
In the NBA, its possible for the team coming from the smallest market (that would be San Antonio) to go and win it all. In MLB, the teams with the biggest payrolls tend to win it all.
Eh, just words from a basketball fan. Basketballs faster paced than baseball, and therefore better to watch for those of us with short attention spans. ..................................@ @
Nevertheless, his mistakes were quite apparent. to use the same e-mail one time, and use the same phone number & zip code another time? Even *I* could see the stupidity in that. And I haven't figured out my signature yet, gimme time. ..................................@ @
America Online gives out their software now on these miniature CD-ROMs.

I agree. Its a shame it was moderated down.

Good luck. Its not even 1500 in the Muslim calender. And our years are only 11 days shorter than in the Gregorian.

We'd all be happy if...

or if we had a bunch of media attention so we could get all these things, that would be nice too.
i guess they got the media attention?
I prefer the term "black-holes" rather than "stars". Stars make the world brighter for everyone...

one billion = 1E9
one billion squared = (1E9)^2 = 1E18.
isn't that a little excessive? sure, there are a lot of toasters and traffic lights and doorbells out there, but still...
better too many than too few, i guess.

yes, it is quite humorous. unfortunately, it wasn't meant to be that way...

And like a few
So I'm sure we have plenty of people cruising slashdot trying to stay cutting edge. Me, for example.
