Here, all the freshmen are required to have laptops (most of us got the IBM 600E, "linux-certified", but anyway). Now that we all have laptops, professors use Microsoft PowerPoint Presentations (we're required to have a Windows partition) to give their lectures, and they upload the lecture to the course website. That way, I can zone out during the class (or not even attend, if it's a large enough class) and not miss anything.
In the GPG discussion, Brian Knotts (bknotts@europa.com) suggested "I think it'd be really handy if the Slashdot User Info page had a field specifically for the user's PGP/GnuPG public key. Maybe give a point of karma if you have a valid public key there, even, just to try to encourage people to get and use PGP/GnuPG. Only when a significant number of people are using these programs will they become *really* useful. "

Upon further review, maybe Wired knew that Slashdotters don't come as much as they used to? And they wanted to know their shortcomings, so a guaranteed way to be on slashdot would be.. to have a story on slashdot. That way, slashdotters annoyed with Wired would voice their comments, and bam, user (non-user?) feedback for Wired.

I come to slashdot because I'd rather have other people filter out the crap for me. I know I could read the same stories by going directly to the other sites, but why expend my effort? Anyway, Its much more interesting to read people's comments and point out the inconsistencies or whatever, because I don't have the knowledge to be able to do that on my own, usually.

I subscribe to the theory that there is a static amount of quality on the internet. The more sites there are, the more the quality is diluted... But someplace like slashdot takes a lot more than its share of quality:)

MSNBC, the joint venture between Microsoft & NBC? Doesn't that count? I would imagine breaking into television would be expensive business. Would AOL do a joint venture with someone already established? "A(OL|BC)", between AOL & ABC? Or AOL|CBS? I think part of their content is served up by CBS. They could have an interesting joint logo -- both of their logos are Eyes. OK, I'm just typing stream of consciousness now...

an Initial Public Offering. When a stock is introduced to the Stock Market, and becomes publicly owned (at least partially) as opposed to privately owned..
It's amazing how little research the stock-buying public tends to do. Look how many people bought shares in China.com, just because it has two buzzwords that Wall Street likes: China, and "dot com". The amount of people buying the stock was huge, even though the company information (SEC filing, i think?) wasn't very easily available. I wonder how many people bought shares in MP3.com thinking that they *owned* the MP3 format? And will those same people buy Red Hat shares thinking Red Hat owns Linux? Hey, MP3 and Linux are some pretty hot buzzwords nowadays.
In terms of design, i like Nad Electronics' ( www.nadelectronics.com) designs. I have fallen in love with their L40. If they only had that running MP3s...
I don't think the problem with the Oscar is the simplicity.. Most of the time, simplicity is good. The Oscar, however, seems to be an unpolished & unfinished work. I would say it's a work of art, if it was made by a student for personal purposes. But selling it, making it commercial, involves an end product more refined. (usually -- we all know there are plenty of exceptions.)

As far as I can see, Islam is the only one of the major religions that makes sense. There's a book entitled "The Bible, The Qur'an, & Science" (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0935782494 /o/qid=934604878/sr=8-1/002-114 6677-6052040) that compares the Qur'an (thats the holy book of Islam, for those of you uninformed) & the Bible in light of science.
