  2. No more SAC on UK Cold War Era Nuclear War Plans Revealed · · Score: 1

"By the way, does anybody know if SAC (Strategic Air Command) is still flying its' B-52 bombers in circles around the perimeter of the Artic Circle, just in case?" SAC itself doesn't exist anymore. After the fall of the Wall it was reorganized as U.S. Strategic Command (STRATCOM). It's still located in Omaha, NE and still maintains its role in the control of U.S. nuclear assets. Although it has now gained roles in military weather forcasting (not as innocent as it seems - afterall, you need updates in the changes of barometric pressures around the world to ensure accurate aerial blasts) and in 2002 it became the home to U.S. Space Command. Offutt AFB (home of STRATCOMM in Omaha) still maintains some deep bunkers and complex communication equipment - it's where they sent Dubya after the first hours 9/11. (I did my undergrad in Omaha and it was eerie to hear fighter-jets circling and to see news reports of men w/automatic weapons sealing off the base - all before definitive news reports were out). As to still having B 52s at a fail-safe - I don't think so - although I do see the Airborne Command Post coming and going quite a bit (it's hard to miss a huge white plane flying on a low approach) - that does stay in the air 24/7 after 9/11 - it's also kinda creepy b/c I've heard that they always keep at least one general on board at all times w/ launch codes incase Washington is attacked...(http://www.stratcom.mil/fact_sheets/fa ct_acp.html)

Why not piggyback on nature and use some relatively harmless virus for transporting the RNA into the cells? Would it be too hard to create the virus with the RNA, or to grow the virus without it mutating into something not containing the RNA?

There has actually been some promising research done using a mutant adenovirus (cause of some common colds). The wild-type virus replicates by 'short-circuiting' a tumor supressor protein (p53) - forcing the cell into replication mode (good for viruses). p53 normally induces cell death if the cell replication cycle becomes uncontrollable, but is (obviously) defective in tumors - which are replicating uncontrollably. By introducing a mutant adenovirus strain that is unable to stop p53, the virus is unable to replicate inside non-cancerous cells, but IS able to replicate, and ultimately kill, tumor cells because they are already lacking in p53.

Still can't do it in my kitche^H^H home lab.

Not necessarily - As an undergrad I've done multiple gene cloning experiments as part of a lab - and more advanced cloning while interning in a research lab. The actual process of cutting and splicing genes has largely been refined by biotech supply companies so that it comes in a kit with easy to follow directions and pre-mixed solutions. All you _really_ need would be an incubator, some medium to grow your cells, a kit that is relatively (couple hundred bucks) cheap, and a few cells - all of which are produced by a multitude of suppliers.

My mom recently asked for a wireless setup at her house - I thought the SSID "TadCockjockeysWirelessBonanza" was interesting enough. The network is as secured as it can be, and I'll admit I'm a little disappointed that it doesn't appear that anyone has even tried to access it - I suppose there aren't enough Bible quotes in it to attract the attention of central Nebraska residents.

An interesting side note which encourages my growing disdain with my native state. Nebraska's Gov. Johanns recently declared March as "Caffeine Awareness Month" in an effort to promote "awareness, detection and prevention of caffeine addiction in Nebraska....to educate businesses and consumers about the threat of caffeine addiction and to raise awareness about the impact it has on society." Hmm....like PRODUCTIVITY?
