A lot of folks talk this way because the concept of evolution offends them. To which I typically respond "ok, ok... we all didn't evolve... some of you are still monkeys"
(yeah, I know we came from apes, not monkeys... but the insult works better)
Anyway, there's a distinct difference between operating systems and software (or at least markup) that is suppoesed to run on any machine and does not.
Well, in my case, it's not because MS is evil... it's because I don't wanna get dicked around with by a company if I can avoid it.
Due to the nature of OSS, no one can decided that the new version of FireFox will cost $1000 and have nasty licensing terms. I _could_ pay that if I wanted, of course.
I go for applications that work the same on both windows and linux, and that I can depend on to not get insanely expensive, etc. Hence, I use firefox, Komodo, etc.
It's not just a matter of zealotry. We've been doing this thing of supporting "non-standard" browsers for 10 years now, and it's a major pain in the ass. In addition to MSIE not implementing certain standards fully (like CSS) sometimes they just plain do it wrong. It's very difficult to work around that kind of randomness.
pretty much all astronauts through apollo were military (or ex), and many current ones are.
The redstone (mercury) rocket was an ICBM (or was that the V-2?) but the big boys like the saturns were new designs.
Bush envisions strength through military force and intimidation. It works in the short term. Not necessarily so well in the long term, but that doesn't appear to be a big concern...
No disrespect to the soviet space pros, but I gotta call BS on 2 counts here:
1) On several occasions, launches were made LONG before ready, for political reasons, risking lives (not that this is a soviet only thing)
2) US failures were less publicized? We had rockets blowing up on LIVE TELEVISION, whilst the world found out about russian flights after splashdown 1/2 the time. The failures we only know about (until recently) because we found massive craters from exploded rockets.
The entire space race was an exercise in propaganda, anyway.
We used to use car metaphors to explain to PHBs why to buy/not buy the some piece of equipment ("why buy the ferrari over the sedan when you'll never get over 70?").
Applied to: WebLogic vs. Tomcat (weblogic has a zillion settings we'd never use) JSP vs. full J2EE/beans/Jwhatever for a simple site etc.
Now the PHB will actually demend the Ferrari server...
I agree with you on calling BS for all the "victims" of Lucas... but calling the movie released 20 years ago a draft is stretching credibility.
It was the finished product, so far as he could do, at the time. I code better now than I did 5 years ago, and I might revise some old production code, but I can't truthfully claim that I was "never finished".
I can't lay my hands on the quote, but I remember PJ saying that there will NOT be any more extended versions after the first 3. Maybe a super-all-three-movies box set, or a reissue down the line, but no changes (with the possible exception of redoing gollumn in 1 scene of FOTR).
Well... it's not only old and useless, but very likely unable to stand. If this were something that we had faith could stand for years, OK. But as is, it's been rusting for twenty+ years, and would probably fail during construction.
Reminds me of the folks who wanted to raise the titanic... never mind the fact that it'd probably disintegrate on the way up...
I stopped trusting those pens when someone left a magic marker in its place (our pens has yellow ink if the bill was good, black if bad) and all the bills from this one guy "looked" bad.
Here's a legit reason: You wanna show your students how the moire patterns appear on copied bills, to make a point about practical applications of optics.
As another poster mentioned, it's the intent to defraud that make it a crime.
Even if you can get the stuff, somehow you gotta include the microthreads, plastic strip, watermark, etc. Plus have the ability to reproduce microprinting and use the correct colors.
I'm sure "almost exactly" made for a nice presentation, but it'd need to be dead on accurate to fool a cashier.
How the hell do you make decent counterfeits w/o the polyester paper that bills are made with? ANY half decent cashier can tell paper from a bill by touch, let alone the dozen other easily checked features.
If your store hires people dumb enough to accept 1 sided black and white bills... you have bigger problems.

damned trolls. Can't even be clever.

We know the metric system. It's not yet practical for us to use it. pbbbt!

The wire isn't a solid object though... so no.

R.I.P. DNA
A whole lotta good point here (Mods? hello...), thanks.
One note: apparently it's not economical to print bills less than twenties, which is why almost no one makes fake fives.
Why would she be crazy?
I stopped trusting those pens when someone left a magic marker in its place (our pens has yellow ink if the bill was good, black if bad) and all the bills from this one guy "looked" bad.
You're wrong about that last bit, but we've already covered that. I've no interest in rehashing it. thanks for the chat.
eh, he's a bad cashier then :) I once had to take $1500 in twenties, and I checked 'em all.
It's a decent example, since the bills are created to create those patterns when copied. Plus, you can teach about counterfeits.
I'm not saying it's not a stretch, but it's certainly legitimate and educational.
in school I was a $5/hour cashier, and I didn't wanna lose my job, so I took 20 minutes to learn how to spot fakes. Sounds like self interest to me.

I'll betcha a real $20 that I could tell it from a real one in 5 seconds...
Except... now the strip is in different places for diff. denominations, and the watermark is a real bitch to fake.
What? the colors blue and peach are secret now?
