Whether or not you need to know assembly depends largely on your needs. May folks, such as web developers, never get really low level, so its not a needed skill. For us we rarely get closer to the hardware (or OS for that matter) than a high level language.
Java/Perl/C++/etc. are more or less cross platform... we're not tied to a specific architecture.
True, but I think that it is too optomistic to expect humans to stop fighting after a coupla million years of practice. We're getting really good at it...
This is extremely minor, but I was bummed that Strider wasn't carrying the broken blade in Bree. It said so much about that character that his line had been carrying it for generations...
Yup, it's entirely possible that some anerobic microbes would survive the trip (perhaps frozen and then thawed upon landing). As I recall, we've retrieved satellites from low orbit (like 400 miles up) that got irradiated fairly badly, and found living bacteria on them.
The reason is, not everyone adheres to the same philosophy about 'open' software (i.e. some of us think it should be a choice, not a mandate). For purely economic reasons, some software will need to be proprietary. Like it or not, people gotta eat.
For that matter, it's fairly rediculous to have to recompile just to add a device. If it is an option for those who want to tweak the system, fine. But for someone like myself, who is more interested in using the OS than understanding all the minutia, a binary option is what we need.
I agree with you that this virus doesn't help our case any... infantile behavior rarely does. That said, I think computer geeks are already considered vaguely dangerous... hopefully this won't change that too much.
There was a sitcom years ago that took place after an accidental nuclear war (don't ask). All the characters survived because they were were in Volvos at the time of attack ("turns out they were safer than we thought")
Go ahead, pick up the carcinogen based materials the shuttle is made with... or the fuel that will burn your hands instantly. Feel free. Perhaps is will kill off some the the knee-jerk paranoid instinct:)
Well, taking parts of Columbia would be a) interfering with a gov't investigation and b) potentially very hazardous to your health... sounds like a decent reason to outlaw it.
Yup. RS didn't carry any high-end stuff, but almost all of the audio/video stuff was made by either Pioneer or RCA (actually made by some other company, and then Pioneer, RCA and Realitic (RS brand) just slapped a badge on it.
I remember at one point I had a guy return a CD playerm because some salesman told him that the "RCA equivalent" would be better... I looked at them both. The difference? Realistic had a smoke-gray glass panel, RCA has a purple tinted one. Wow, really must have improved sound quality... Dude paid an extra $150 for that purple...
That was my first thought, but if you look, the linked article is actually the review.

Heh, that's just _daring_ a contrary mod to drop you to -1 :)
Foo, and then the Battletech guys step in an PPC the orcs...
Is the third the one at JPL that the keep rehearsing maneuvers with?
Alternately, just get a tap and die set... the really small kind...

If you're smart enough to get away with it, people won't realize that you're being a jerk :)
They heard that Liv's dad knew about digging space rocks or somesuch thing...
Yup, soy un hombre :)

Although, you must admit... the video sounds entertaining...

Heh, point conceeded, sir :)
Ack, if you're gonna do something so evil, don't do it in perl... do it in some other language... VBScript for example...
Well, I said nice, not DAMN NICE.... there's a difference (and it costs about 3 grand)
