From what I heard from when Seth Green was on Love Line. It was a huge fan success with a fanatical following but there was one guy way way WAY up the ladder at Fox that just didn't get the show and didn't like it. He made the decision to switch the times around and drop airings from the schedule at random (a surefire way to get a ratings drop if you want a show pulled).
How do you like that eh? The best show on television with a huge fanbase pulled because of one ass-hat at the top. That's Hollywood for you. But hey, at least we have gems like American Idol and Joe Millionaire (1 and 2) to fill the quality TV gap left by Family Guy. I hope that exec gets slapped and sterilized.
No matter which side you're on, bible thumper or free thinking hippie, being legislated into a belief system is a very dangerous level of control.
I find it interesting that you chose to lump gays pot smokers and pedophiles into the same group. I fail to see the parallels between two consenting adults having sex or somebody smoking out and vegetating on their couch and a person who violently rapes children. There must be some suspension of rational thought in order to consider the three to be on par as far as socially damaging crimes.
Let's see. Let people have their own free will to decide what's best for them = Free society = Liberal. Okay.
So following that "logic", here's the other side of the coin. Spoon feed people what "we" say is good for them and label the dissenters as terrorists = despotism = conservative.
Head for the hills, the liberals are coming! If they take over, we'll have to think for ourselves!!!
I guess I need to start using [sarcasm][/sarcasm]tags sheesh. It's a pet peeve of mine when people use smart-sounding words in order to seem more educated. I'd be willing to bet you didn't know what that word meant before you looked it up on google.
Seriously, if you can't appreciate music through a set of regular 50-watt speakers or a pair of headphones there's something wrong with you. It shouldn't only be about fidelity and depth and range or whatever other audiophile fluff, it should be about the quality of the music. Shit heard through optimized Dolby 6.1 is still shit!
After working at a startup for about a year designing sites for seven dollars an hour (fresh out of college, I didn't know any better), the boss man starts to become more and more demanding. He starts calling me on days off and on weekends, even paging me during my uncle's wedding, expecting me to jump up and run to the office to fix what he thought was wrong.
The weekend before I quit I got a call at home. "What the hell do you think you're doing? We told the client he'd get 3 pages for his site, I printed it out and it's twenty pages long! You get back in here now and fix it!" I didn't go in, instead I worked out the following week giving him a chance to at least acknowledge he'd been an ass. He didn't.
On the last day just before lunch I downloaded "Take this Job and Shove it" (he loved Napster), stuck it in the startup folder, powered down the computer, cranked the volume on the speakers and left. I never knew if the song played when the computer started up, but in my mind it did.
This is America, there's no "evenly and fairly" here.
Some thug robs someone for $120 and he's in jail for 18 months, Enron executives, guilty of stealing millions from their employees, are getting off with a small fine and no jail time. Is that fair?
Roman Polanski drugs and rapes a 13 year old girl and runs off to France to escape justice and is STILL ALLOWED TO WORK and even win the industry's top honor. Were he a "commoner" he would have been put in federal "pound you in the ass" prison like he should have. Is that fair?
The sad truth is we can't just "let the legal system work" because the legal system is run by cash, and normal people are constantly screwed over by it while those with money either get off scott free or with a weak plea bargain that's not really a punishment.
This ruling just shows how much money can influence the decisions of even an "objective" judge and tilt his decision in the direction of those with deep pockets.
"What's the matter with you people? I was joking! Don't you know a joke when you hear one?" -- Gene Wilder, Young Frankenstein
Once again, slashdot readers have looked past the meat n' potatoes of an argument and commented on the little piece of rotten parsley sitting off to the side.
Joking good sir, joking. Purely sarcasm. I was pointing out Lucas' affection for covering up bad plot and no story with over the top CGI shots and therefore ends up spending too much time on post production.
Besides, the story went down so fast I couldn't read one word of it.
Gotta throw in a bunch of loud noises and shiny things to make up for the lack of story this one is sure to suffer from. Of course I'm going basing this on what an abortion of film the first 2 were
This is the same thing Mac users have been saying since PC gaming became big. "If you buy a PC for gaming then you're telling the publishers that it's okay!"
The real reason is probably more about numbers. They look at which platform is used by the majority of gamers. Just so happens it's the Windows PC. If you want to be a serious computer gamer, you have to bite the bullet and boot up Windoze. Of course, some people just need something to bitch about so they complain that game publishers don't support their platform. Be it Mac, Linux, BSD, etc.
Imagine how much longer it would've taken Valve to write HL2 for Linux and every other open source OS. My god! It would be out about the same time as...Duke Nukem Forever!
I think he was pointing out how bleeding hearts have perpetuated a culture of victimization, where everyone is coddled to the point where there are excuses for everything: Rape? Daddy didn't love me. Murder? Daddy beat me and mommy drank. Shot up a school? I played a video game.
Oh, and Jack Thompson's political views are irrelevant, all he sees are dollar signs.
I don't know about you guys but I'm getting a 404 error from the main link. I found the same story on The Register.
"Following the tragic school shootings in Littleton several years ago, the parents of several of the victims attempted to sue a host of games companies - including id Software, creators of Doom, and Nintendo - creators of such blood filled orgies of violence as Mario and Pokemon."
what did happen to fair use? "destroy all copies (including CD-Rs)"
What happened to our right to make backup copies for when the original gets scratched or broken?
This whole thing just stinks. Not only are they asking for our ID and signature, but we'd also have to agree not to infringe in the future. I'm guessing this doesn't just apply to copyright laws today. All they have to do is get a law passed that makes something you're legally doing now illegal. Then it's the simple matter of threatening you with billions in damages and settling for your life savings, car, house, firstborn and kidneys. All because you had the audacity to backup your music collection.
Here's a fun exercise. Go download the JAWS screen reader free trial, install it and reboot with your monitor off.
Now try to connect to the internet. if you manage to get that far without your monitor on, try buying concert tickets, try accessing hotmail or yahoo, try looking up a book on amazon, try even typing a simple word document without being able to see the screen, based solely on audio input.
Come back and post how it was. I've done it before, it SUCKS! Pop up ads take control of your screen with no warning so you can't tell where the hell you are, developers don't do something as simple as using the [label][/label] tag on forms so you have no idea which textbox your cursor is in. It's terrible! So stop complaining that you're going to have to give up some small meaningless thing so other people can have the luxury of USING THEIR COMPUTER in a fraction of the capacity that us sighted people are able to. In other words, stop whining, you don't know how good you have it.
I see your point too. I think what eBay's doing is the right direction, not necessarily the right implementation. I think a court order should be necessary otherwise your example comes into play where the LEO's just see that JQPublic sold 5 car stereos last month and uses that fact alone to get all his personal information. It's a scary precedent. It's certainly a policy that needs refining before they implement it.
But then, that's applying logic to business policies and the process of law, and that's a no-no heh.
I miss that show! The "Aiight-blah" episode is still my favorite.

Troll? What the hell! Parent had my side hurting. if I had any mod points I'd mod you funny. Some people...

Criticism from an anonymous coward means a lot to me. Next time have the stones to use your username.

See? I can make up words too.
If you have access to a kick-ass stereo by all means use it. I was just saying that the sound is nowhere near as important as the music.
Seriously, if you can't appreciate music through a set of regular 50-watt speakers or a pair of headphones there's something wrong with you. The only reason Microsoft is doing this is to have to pay out to as few people as possible. At the very least it's dishonest, but that's not illegal.
You're right though, it's not a lawsuit...YET. However, what do you think is the next logical step after the C&D letter if they don't follow it?
...we just litigate every competitor into going out of business. In what world is that anti-competitive?
Seriously, all it takes is one geek with enough free time. It'll be on the net within hours of release.
