If you want my take on it, some people sitting in big offices (picture Microsoft and Sun logos on the walls) saw the recent spate of articles about high-profile defections from their own products to Linux, and pushed the "panic button." They encouraged and financed a proxy (SCO) in the advertisement of an elaborate legal fiction in hopes of slowing the hemorrhaging.
This theory has been mentioned many times on Slashdot. Is there any actual evidence to support this? Or is this just the "here a conspiracy, there a conspiracy, everywhere a conspiracy" paranoia at work?
My girlfriend grew up in communist Poland. She once described it this way:
Communism means having plenty of money, but nothing to buy. Everyone has a job and enough money to buy things they need, but the store shelves are empty.
Capitalism means having no money, but plenty of things to buy. There are no jobs and no money, but the store shelves are full of nice things.
It's not easy, but it does happen. There was a big "purge" in the Windows NT group many years ago (I think it was just after NT 3.1 shipped). Like I said, rare, but it happens.
Working at Microsoft is almost like having a civil service job (say, at the Post Office). Just about the only sure way to get fired is to bring a gun to work and start shootin'.
The 1000 RL was certainly released after 1989. I worked for Tandy (in Fort Worth, TX) in their R&D group writing system BIOS code. I was working on the 1000 RL project when I left Tandy in May, 1990.
I'm pretty sure it was released in late 1991 or early 1992. Certainly before mid 1995 -- not even Tandy would take 5 years to get something that simple out the door...
Here's one from IBM: Parallelize Linux system services to improve boot speed. It's not so much as "replacement" as an "enhancement" to speed up the boot process. Interestingly, it uses make to manage service dependencies.
No, they don't need to open their source code, they just need to point you to the relevant patents. Did you know the Win32 TransmitFile() API is patented? Have you ever compared this with the Unix/Linux sendfile() API?
What happens in an emergency? Say, when the pilot needs to take aggressive actions to avoid another plane? Sounds like s/he would be stuck between a rock and a soft place...
As a lowly private pilot, I feel these "policy decisions" should be left in the cockpit, not in the hands of some software dweeb.
The Tandy Subway (and other areas around the Tandy headquarters) are featured in the movie "The Lathe of Heaven", based on Ursula le Guin's book of the same title.

I'm still waiting for The Matrix, Inverted featuring "Neo the Determinant".
That theory is mine.

outdated designs -- poor QA and reliability -- and a decreasing marketshare -- Are you talking about Ford or Microsoft?

Egad, a pattern...This sounds like a line from an A.A. meeting.
Hello, my name is Ann, and I've been Windows-free for 3 years.
Everyone: Hi, Ann!!
