  1. Re:all recording is lossy on 200gb Hack for iPod Nano · · Score: 1

Your definition of "lossy" is a bit off. It's not a loss-over-time issue; rather, it is a compression/decompression issue. Encoding analog audio into a digitally compressed format will result in some loss when it is decompressed, i.e. played back in analog. There will be some loss there (high-end treble and low-end bass usually suffer the most), but it is "close enough" to justify the reduction in file size.

  6. Semicolons can be used for lists on Reviews: "O Brother" And Others · · Score: 1

If a list contains elements which subsequently include commas, semicolons should be used to separate each element of the list rather than simple commas. For example: I ate warm soup; a ham, turkey, and bacon sandwich; and a pickle for lunch.

Universal was only in for the money. They weren't doing it for the artists. It's all about the Benjamin's baby! If Courtney gets her share, I wonder how many other artists will hop on and demand their share also. Maybe Ms. Love had more of an influence with the Universal folks to get the lawsuit through??

one benefit of napster is the fact that people assume that they are downloading the song indicated by the title. my friend and i wrote and recorded some silly songs about wearing women's underwear and poopsex last year. recently, we converted these songs to mp3 format and renamed them with popular artist titles, like britney spears, limp bizkit, etc. numerous unsuspecting napster users have downloaded these songs and to their amazement they surely found that they did not get what was anticipated. so if any of you slashdotters hear songs named "poopsex" or "i like to wear your underwear," you now know how napster was used to dupe users and promote silliness!! and if i have prodded your interest, go find the songs yourself! they are also on napster by the real titles, so if you want a good laugh, go have a listen!

  25. how will this affect classroom learning? on IBM Demos Atomic-Scale Circuitry · · Score: 1

Seeing as how the advance of integrated circuits and microprocessors has changed the face of computing over the past few decades from the days of vaccuum tubes, classroom learning has also changed in the same fashion. No longer do EE and CompE students study the theories behind punch cards and vaccuum tubes, but rather the latest advances in those areas. How much of the current learning in an engineering curriculum will be done away with after the successful implementation of nanotechnology? Will students no longer need to study the EMFs created in circuits, etc? What else could be removed?
