These work with the primary selection under X by the way.
Then, sometime in the Win95 or Win98 era, Microsoft changed it to the less-intuitive and less-standard Ctrl-C, Ctrl-V.
I don't know why, but I'd venture a guess and say that it has to something to do with the Mac (apple-C, apple-V, etc.). Remember in the early nineties Microsoft Office was the office suite for the Mac, but was far behind WordPerfect and Lotus for DOS/Windows.
I think I understand the reasons for these types of standards and changes. When they used the Insert types of commands, that was probably because it was a key combination that wouldn't send any info through a terminal shell or command prompt. Ctrl-C is usually a cancel command in a terminal window. When applications were switching to being almost all graphical, Ctrl and letters became acceptable. The main reason for the move to Ctrl-C I think is to have the cut, copy, paste commands convenient for the left hand while the right is on the mouse. C was probably chosen as the mnemonic for Copy, and then the keys on either side so that cut/copy/paste would be three consecutive keys.

GPL. You are allowed to use GPL'd software in your own code as long as your own code is also licensed under the GPL and provided under the same terms (basically free of charge and in source form) to end users.
He made one of the more common errors about the GPL. It does not have to be free of charge. He apparently has heard about the free as in speech/free as in beer thing, and accidentally thought both are required. Free as in Beer is not a requirement, or else Mandrake, SuSE, Redhat, etc. would not be in business.
Before downloading our products, we ask for your support by joining the Mandrakelinux Users Club.(my bold)
You're not looking at the right page. He is referring to here where they have two buttons on the bottom. The choices are: "I agree to support Mandrakelinux, please send me to the Mandrakelinux Users Club Registration page" or "I'm already a member of the Club or plan on registering soon, please send me to the download page"
Aside from the runon sentences used in both of those, it's a little annoying to have to "agree" that you're planning on joining the club to get to the page of mirror sites.
My wife actually jumped right in with a solution to this. I was playing a lot of Starcraft in college, and she wanted to spend more time with me, so she asked me to show her how to play. Now that we've finished college and moved away and gotten real jobs, we still keep two computers networked at home and play some on the weekends. I don't have that much time to play games in general anyway, but it is fun when there is a game you can both play.
We also played some Dr. Mario, but we've had to work on that some because she has a very strong competitive streak, and we wouldn't be able to quit if she hadn't won the last game. With Starcraft, we're able to play as a team against a few computers, so it works out better.
I've recently started playing Unreal Tournament a little, but she has already said she doesn't like it.
Yeah, it's really just a swap file. You can do the same thing in Linux, which allows you to avoid partitioning your hard drive and also allows you to adjust swap size on the fly.
That is what I have been looking for. I didn't know that Linux could do with a swap file instead of partition. I have an 8.4GB drive dual booting with Win98, so space is a little tight. My question is now, will most distros do a page file automatically if you don't set up a swap partition?
Yeah, the original Donkey Kong game was the very first game with those characters (Colecovision I believe and then later on to Atari 2600). That would make Mario Bros. and then Super Mario Bros the spinoff series. I also find it amazing the other places Mario shows up--reffing the boxing matches on Mike Tyson's Punch Out, for instance.
Yup, I have an 8260 (same style, but no voice dialing) in a drawer at home. I really liked it, but I was able to get a Motorolla V60 for $20 when I renewed my contract, so I switched to that. If it breaks, though, I'll probably switch back to the 8260 instead of buying another. I don't really want a camera phone.
a portable that played the same games as the console
Yup, a great feature, and I'm sure one which no other console maker will ever do again. It saps the game market. They want people to buy additional games for their portable unit to make more money. I do think it was incredible that they could make a portable with enough horsepower to play the regular games.
Enter the Martix is an interesting case because there was very very close interaction with the directors of the movie. They directed cutscenes specifically for the game, used the real actors to do their own motion capture, digitized their own faces, etc. The breakdown seemed to be that they were trying to recreate the environment and the world of the game so closely, that they neglected some technical aspects of the game mechanics. The time schedule probably also figured into this. Because they were putting so much into the realistic details, they were using up too much of their schedule and were set on a simultaneous release with Reloaded. I thought game play was really fun and cool, but it had several things that were just visual and technical glitches that could have been ironed out if they would have allowed more time. (clipping and AI issues mostly)
That is one of things I really like about Blizzard. They prioritize getting the game right over meeting a release schedule.
My wife didn't like the default install of Firefox 0.8 because it was already too much. She likes a very minimalist desktop and applications. No icons on the desktop! Every application needed goes in the Quicklaunch bar so she never has to look at the cluttered Start menus. Firefox complaints: How do I get rid of that search box? How do I get rid of that link bar? How do I get rid of all those bookmark folders in the menu? How can I get rid of the row of menus? (if possible)
I've found ways to do all of these except getting rid of the bookmark folders, but it's clean enough that she likes it. I was glad to be able to get her away from IE.
One default that bothered me was that the download manager was set to not prompt you where you want to save files. It just puts them in the location set in the options without telling you. I had to go into the options just to check where it decided the "default folder" was going to be. That's a little new and threw me for a loop at first. I found out you can change that, so I do for new people I install it for.
I'm glad to find out that's not a real link. I just recently started using Firefox, and I thought I was doing something wrong or not clicking it fast enough before it went away or something. What a stupid idea for a font to use.
Are you a big enough company for MS to care? Companies with several thousand Windows licenses get decent support from them. MS doesn't support the little guy much, but bigger companies do all right.
I had heard the interview with Ted Bundy, where he talked about being influenced strongly by it, and I thought that it was more widespread. I just did a lot of searching for scientific studies linking pornography to sex crimes or violent crimes, but most of the studies don't show very much of a link. You are correct there.
One of the other effects the studies did show was it fostering a more promiscuous attitude toward pre-marital sex and multiple partners. I am morally opposed to those things, so I still think pornography exposure to children is not a good thing, but I grant the lack of the violent crime link.
Thank you for the rational challenge. I was surprised to not find the evidence I thought would be there.
"Let us, for laughs, point out the assumptions this idiot has made in the article:" --and some responses
"The target audience for the Sims 2, and the Singles, is pasty white teenage boys." --OK unfounded.
"There is on-screen explicit sex in "The SingleS" --This is fact, not assumption. The ESRB gave it an Adults Only rating for it.
Pornography is inherently evil. --Moral judgement, but common to most religions. If you have no moral committments, you will probably not think it's wrong.
"Exposing children to pornography is inherently evil." --A lot of exposure to it is usually damaging to children's mental development. Most sex crime offenders and violent criminals have been influenced by long exposure to pornography.
"Video game players tend to be ignorant, smut-obsessed, teenage males." --You threw the unfounded "ignorant" in there to build your straw man. Visual sexual imagery does generally have a stronger influence on males, rather than females. Testosterone levels do tend to be highest in teens and twenties.
"Parents are stupid and ignorant and are perfectly willing to lend their sons credit cards so that they can purchase an Adults-Only game over the internet." --Again, straw man. Parents would of course not do so if asked by their child to purchase an adults-only game. However, internet distribution does make it easier for children to acquire a game by getting hold of a credit card at home and purchasing it without having to get to the store, get around age checking somehow, and then get it home unnoticed.
"The ESRB is a toothless organization composed only of malcontent pedophiles who wish to corrupt our children's minds with sex and violence." --Wow, the straw men are getting bigger. The only statement here that is relevent is that the ESRB is "toothless". That idea is based on the fact that the system is voluntary--there is no enforcement. Companies generally submit their games for rating because it helps them sell. Stores voluntarily decide what to do with the ratings of the games.
"Movies inherently contain less violence, filthy sex, and coarse language than videogames do, and are much harder for little kids to see/obtain." --Again, there is more enforcement in the movie industry--both in theaters and rental stores.
"Homosexuality is a deviant lifestyle, and depictions of homosexual acts are somehow worse than ordinary pornography." --Moral judgement--see earlier comment.
Questions you might ask the author:
"Did you actually play the games in question?" --He was commenting on content that has been seen or announced. If there is any uncertainty, it would be that there is possibly more content that he hasn't commented on.
"Are you aware of any of the earlier shit that came from Japan?" --If it is focused in Japan, then he may not be aware of it.
"If so, are you aware how it is sold, and what the sales volume for it is, and what the target audience is?" --Are you aware of how much/little of that is commonly sold in stores in the US or is known by most people? There are lots of obscure titles with objectionable content (Custer's Revenge, etc.).
"If you're so morally pure, then why do you use such sexually charged language?" --Huh? So people who hold moral beliefs should use some nice euphemisms like "going all the way" or "getting down" instead of direct words like nudity, intercourse, or penetration? What does terminology have to do with moral beliefs? If you are referring to words like sleazy or smutty that have negative connotations, that implies that he thinks it's wrong, so how does it contradict his moral beliefs?
Are you compensating for something by growing that thick, 1970's-style beard? --Off topic.
Are you aware of the how much better the pornography industry is doing in terms of gross sales in comparison to the movie industry? --I doubt strongly the pornography industry is doing better in gross sales or revenue
there's also an area above the surface of Endor's moon where Vader fell.
You mean the emperor, but yes, that created a very strong spot. I read in one of the novels where Leia was going to meet someone in orbit around Endor, and as their ship flew through that area, Leia had a freak-out attack and passed out.
Wow, good thing you had that AC "friend" come to your rescue.
Most chiropractors don't have anything to do with mystic healing and all that. If you've got something stiff in your back or neck, sometimes a pop or two can loosten it up and you'll feel better. It's not much different than a massage. I don't think either is any kind of wondrous medicine--it just feels good.
Heh, thank you for correcting him. I suppose I should take a little more care in story submissions than in postings in the discussions. If someone is going to have the gall to correct someone's spelling or grammar, they'd better get it right.
What the heck is with everybody here ripping on chiropractors, and especially ripping on ME about getting the adjustment? I would have done the computer stuff anyway because they're friends of ours, we were already over at their house for a barbecue (see? free food anyway) and because it was just installing 3 programs--it took all of like 10 minutes to install them and run the Ad Aware scan.
I've never been to a chiropractor before, so I'm not a freak about it. It was just something nice he did. I just brought it up because it was different. I was hoping it would generate interesting responses here, rather than "beer...food...etc."
How dare you! Peroffspringdrake
