If you look back just a year ago, there were relatively few MP3 players on the market. Today there are literally hundreds. So much competition is going to drive the price way down.
The iPod may be one of the best players on the market, but when you can buy a similar-sized device with more memory and features for 1/5 the price, Apple won't be compete. Unlike Apple's OS, I don't think people will be willing to pay even twice as much a portable music player.
Just think about all the products where the brand originally added value, but they eventually became commodities - PCs, walkmans, cd players, etc. MP3 players will soon join that crown and the iPod will fade away.
Doesn't Apple's FairPlay DRM only apply to songs downloaded from their music store? I didn't think the songs that are ripped from from CD and converted to AAC by Itunes had any DRM.
All I want is a device that supports all the major codecs - mp3, aac, wma, and of course ogg. I'm not asking for the proprietary DRM stuff. Why is that so difficult?
Can I help it if I "find" music that's encoded in multiple formats? Sure, it all plays fine on my Mac with VLC - but damned if anyone's bothered to make a portable device with the same breadth.
Why should we be concerned if the human race becomes extinct at some undefined point in the future? As long as my immediate decendents aren't affected, I'm not sure I care.
It's probably unrealistic to expect the human race to last forever - nothing else in the Universe does.
I watched the trailers for both Cars and Polar Express and the animated characters in both movies seemed stiff and unattractive.
As a fan of Anime and Miyazaki in particular, I think the Hollywood studios could stand to learn a lesson or two from the masters of Japanese animation. Just think how rich the colors and characters seem in Sen (Spirited Away) or Princess Mononoke. Compared to these masterpieces, Cars and Polar Express are just cartoons.
China is supporting the development of a Chinese-centric version of Linux. Assuming it takes off, China carries enough weight in the market-place that there will always be a viable hardware alternative to MS-only devices.
Any standard that doesn't support the marketplace in China will die a quiet, unmourned death.
Did China finally figure that the world is running out of oil and they don't find an alternate source of energy to hydrocarbons, their economic development will soon grind to a halt.
If you own a Mac and have cable, I don't think you need to purchase any additional hardware to capture HDTV.

Any significant conflict involving orbital space will leave so much debris that satellites and spacecraft will run much higher risks of collisions.
The consequences of a war in space may be devastating to our communication and weather networks.
Hmm - my download started off fine at 500kbs. Dropped down to 250kbs, then 130kbs, and now 75kbs. I just wonder how many Slashdot readers are downloading this ISO right now?
What the hell do 6th graders need computers for? I'd rather see my kid's elementary school spend their money on small class sizes or music programs.
Read Clifford Stoll's book "Silicon Snake Oil."

I am pleased to see that someone besides Apple is supporting this codec on a music player. With bluetooth and aac support, who needs an ipod?
I could be wrong, but I don't think Apple owns the rights to AAC - only to a proprietary DRM layer they distribute with the AAC-encodes songs.

Yes!
I second this opinion - Bihn bags - especially the "brain bag" and "empire builder" are amazing. Some of the best quality and features I've ever seen.

I wish the US was so forward thinking.
Looks intriguing. If they ever come out with a bluetooth version, I may buy it. Just think how this might revolutionize the laptop computer.
Here's a working link. HDTV to a Mac

Seems to me that Launchbar pretty much addresses Tog's concerns with Dock. Maybe Apple should start including it in their native software suite.
