I have to agree with you here. The problem is not that large companies like Dell won't cater to small companies and individuals.

I've never bought anything from Dell in my life. My current PC was bought from a company called Ibex because they had a linux compatible hardware section. I've never bought any Microsoft software either. I use Gentoo.

The problem is that small companies and individuals expect large corporations to cater to them. They won't, but there are so many smaller corporations and open source projects that will. I understand that not everyone can easily install a Gentoo system (I had to recompile my kernel with an 8 KB kernel stack and without SMP to get my wireless card to work), but the alternatives range from Apple to Fedora.

In conclusion, consumers ultimately need to look out for their own best interests. Dell is not going to do that for you!

One thing I would never do, even if you paid me 7 figures, is live out the rest of my life in Chattanooga. I've lived in Tuscaloosa, AL and Columbus, MS before. You literally could not pay me enough to move back. The return on investment for companies willing to locate in urban areas is mindblowingly enormous.

For some context, I write and maintain enterprise-level (S&P, Deutsche Bank, WaMu, etc) cashflow projection software. I'm also part of a Windows to Gentoo/Red Hat migration.

The really disgusting thing about the sugar tariff is the environmental impact. Most of the subsidized sugar is grown in what used to be part of the Everglades. The fertilizer runoff allows cattails, a non-native species, to grow taller than the native sawgrass. In doing so, they block out light to the sawgrass and it dies. Without sawgrass, there is no Everglades. So because of this tariff, we are loosing a unique environmental resource that can never be replaced.
