The main point of the post was about business
alternatives, not about Indians. Furthermore,
every poster is allowed to talk against Indians
(when on topic) if he chooses, as long it
is on specific topics and provides supporting
evidence. Why not?
Don't call people racist just because they
directly express an opinion, what counts is
the quality of the opinion and the quality
of evidence. For example, if I say that it has been my experience that
Indian students at US universities tend to
rank at the bottom of the class, does it make me a
racist? No. I could have easily said that
Frensh students tend to be at the bottom of the
class (if I had different observations).
Languages don't really have spccific goals. They provide
tools so the programmer to deal with syntax and semantics, but specific
goals? No, certainly not for general purpose languges.
What is the goal of English?
What is the goal of Perl?
As you can see there is no specific goal other than the general ability
to communicate with the computer. And as any human language, programming
languages should have the ability to evolve with the times as progrmmers
aquire new habits and tastes. Languages are designed to serve the programmer.
If a language stay loyal to their own goals, its speakers ( the programmers ) will
begin to evaporate. Adaptability and change of goals is a very important ingredient
to the language. This is certainly true for perl.

Introduction to Debian
·
· Score: 1
Because everyone who has a CD to sell, they have flood us with advertisements and links to their distro. The topic is about Debian. It is not about BSD, Gentoo, Windows, or Solaris.
If you don't like something about Debian, feel free to sent them your patches. Otherwise, you have nothing to complain about, and besides, they did not take your money. I understand if you choose to ignore them, but complain?
(btw, ESR is a tele-evangelist and agaist Free Software. Nothing to do with Debian.)
The main good thing about Debian is that you don't have to bet your future to the interests of for-profit companies. It is a ton better when you trust your computer to fellow hacker instead of of businessmen whose job is to find a way to eventually screw you. (I have heard a lot of compliment about Caldera/SCO ever the years, the end result is not very surprising.)
Installation? Big deal, it is a task that most Debian people will need to do it once every 8-10 years.
Graphical interface? Again, no need to wast effort on something you will use only once; althought, is a good way to exclude the receent windows users who cannot stand it if there is no GUI or a "rm -i" confirm, and re-confirm what I already told the computer to do. We don't need these type of people, they should go back to MS Windows before they ruin the spirit and customs of Unix. Go back!
You should not expect that the distribution of a for-profit company will be available for others to take it over. If the commercial Linux company has locked you in with their proprietory package mananager and now they are gone, then essenctially, everyobody starts from the very begining. There is little or no point to maintain an old distribution if everything has to be done all over again. As for the customers, they knew (or should have known) that companies can close or they could stop development. Now that you are stuck, perhaps you will not rely on companies next time.
(btw, the proper name is Free Software, not open source.)
Again, only the foolish invest in risky things or goes around gambling. If you invest in non-risky things (like Microsoft, IBM, or any business who are not gamblers) there is little or no risk involved. And besides, since you have the enough money to be an investor the whole issue of investing is elective. You are not forced to invest, you could just stay home and play golf.
But the student has no choice about not getting into deep debt, and later not finding work. The other choice is digging holes for the rest of life, in contract with business investing, this one is a forced investment.
(I am user "screenrc", in case this gets posted as AC)
Normally, companies like IBM, Microsoft, GE, ATT, etc., do not just "take a risk" when they invest. They do so after considering risk/reward , and as they teach you in Business School, you should always choose the investments with no risk. Risks are for suckers.
Do you want to know who take real risk?
Ask those who just spend 5-6 studing at the University and have received NOTHING from their investment. The real risk-takers are those who are today unemployed.
Caldera/SCO was not just a user of Free Software. THey were profiting from the Free Developer's work, while contributing almost nothing. Now they turn around and start suing the hands that feed them for many years.
It is more like as if you after supporting financially a stranger for many years, one day he decides to sue you claiming that you stole from him! Caldera/SCO are not just looters, they are not just parasites, they represent the worst of humanity. Our jails have kinder inhabitants than the SCO group of thugs.
There is no standard definition of Capitalism and Communists, at least as Microsft and SCO (Caldera) sees it. According to them, when something is to their benefit they call it "capitalism", and when the very same thing is to their detrivmetn they call it "communism". It is all a matter of what definition they use today, and it is also very possible that tomorrow will define these things differently, as they have done already!
I my experience, working hard and doing overtime means nothing. After being burned twice, you learn very quickly that looking for future benifits is simply insane. Work as hard as you want, it is your choice, but expecting that you will actually get rewarded for it is, as stated above, plain stupid.
If you are looking for benefits, get them NOW! If you rely on the future, you too will learn the hard way.
The last thing we need is training Indian developers on Linux. It will not be great news to off-load Linux developement to India - not great news at all, actually, nothing is worse than this.
Suppose I buy a house near at Chernobyl. Or perhaps I choose to reside build a house within close distance of the nuclear reactors at Three Mile Island, after the radiation accidents, for the sole purpose to sue for damages to my quality of life. I think the law says that since I knowingly bought a house in a radiation area, I have no case for complain.
Why is this concept similar to Caldera who bought the IP after they knew that IP property has been devalued (as they claim) ?

(By the way, as perhaps you know, even the doorman nowdays is making
