  1. Treaty will have it on CFR China Expert: US Tech Firms Should Worry About Beijing's New Anti-Terror Law · · Score: 3, Informative

    http://slashdot.org/comments.p...

    Re-posting.

China, India, the EU, America, etc, will come together on a treaty binding agreement by which each nation has access to their own citizens data without compromising the sovereignty and rights of others. Born out of this unholy alliance will be a "Government API" baked into the next iOS, OSX, Android, Windows, and other commercially available OSs**, and possibly at the hardware level too. What this means is that when you activate your new devices, you choose where you live (as you abide by their laws). From there, your encryption will be chosen with the system that the respective nation has access to.

**I begin not to suspect what will happen to open source platforms other than deemed to be illegal (possibly).

Drones can be weaponized; hence the ban. Short of turning the metaphorical DC bubble into literal reality, this was entirely expected. I'm extremely annoyed and dismayed that any of you would be surprised. This isn't news except for the clueless morons out there.

  5. Then you don't get encryption.

You can still create a local account only in Windows 8 and Windows 10. Next, turn on BitLocker and record your own recovery key. All of this can be done OFFLINE!

Zuckerberg is a disgrace (among meany reason) for bastardizing the meaning of words.

  7. You're looking at it all wrong. This has nothing to do with which is better, it has everything to do with the law! In the past (and maybe now not, not sure), there where two versions of the same car for the US market; the California edition which contained extra catalytic converters and emission control hardware, and the US edition for the other 49 states. Technology has come a long away that I doubt that's still the case, but chime in if you know. Anyways, Apple would is only going USB-C in order to not have to make a separate EU productions run. So going with the common denominator, the only single production run at the factory will, in fact, be USB-C in the future...as I understand it now.

  8. ...it just mandates a USB-Plug *on the charger*, so even for the crap from Cuppertino it does not change anything...

No, it actually does. The new MacBook charger uses USB-C, as will the new iPhone 7. Lightning (connector) is dead. Even if Apple were to release it as a royalty free open standard today, the industry momentum is already in motion. That ship sailed.

  9. Everyone is Washington DC that's pushing this will be Investing in BlackBerry (RIM) stock. Once the law goes into effect, stock will soar!!! And the best part? You won't do fuck-all to stop it! Democracy all a charade because the populous stopped giving a damn a long time ago.

It's good to perform a test load on them once in a while, but even if you don't, 5 years and they'll need to be replaced; if not to address a potential hazard. They're lead acid cells. They dry out, bloat, and in some cases vent violently!.

Some consumer grade UPS units are so cheap that it makes no sense to replace just the battery. With those, you're better off replacing the whole thing as all the internal components wear out with age to. But, if you wish to go with a generic replacement battery assuming you know the cell type, Batteries Plus is a good place to start.

Even older APC SmartUPS can give a false reading if they've never been fully cycled. Yes, they do a periodic self-test (you can hear the relay clicking when being performed), but not a full discharge and recharge cycle. With batteries that old, you'll be lucky if you get 2 to 5 minutes of runtime out of them at nominal load. In fact, for SmartUPS, they must be recalibrated with a new battery. Typically this used to involve putting a 25% or 33% load until the battery completely drains in order to learn the new runtime metric. We used to use a few halogen lights to provide the test load :)

All that said, should a nuclear exchange commence between Sunni and Shia, there's nothing stopping Iran from lobbing one into Israel for ideological reasons. Why? Because they can, and that's all that matters in conflict.
