they have been finding excuses for the last 20+ years to avoid expanding refining capacity, blaming it on environmental regulation in particular

Wrong. Refining capacity has expanded significantly in the U.S. while no new refineries are built precisely because of EPA roadblocks. Far cheaper, faster, and easier to expand than build new. This concentrates throughput and pollution at existing sites.

Typical slashdot circle jerk. Half-educated pious nerds finding substitutional self gratification by pounding their plastic keyboards while sitting in their air conditioned apartments, surrounded by synthetics representing tons of crude oil, sludge, and air pollution ... certain of their intellectual and moral superiority over the ape-like red-staters who mine, drill, process, and pump the stuff in mindless subservience to 'the man' ... happy to use it in their their car, furnace, airliner, powerplant ... but unwilling to face the consequences of their actions while denigrating the adults in the world who, thank God, supply it.

    Grow up, boys and girls.

Total BS - My 3yr old (-1 week) PB was rebuilt under Applecare just because a key broke off ... 1 week shy of the warranty expiration. They gave me a new keyboard, new upper case (old one cracked at headphone jack, new screen surround with hinges (don't know why). Damn thing looked brand new.

    Dear Subtle,

I think the tired arguments emanate from your side of the debate. We ALL want a clean environment, and the fact is that the free-market Western capitalist system has struck the best balance between modernization and environmentalism; not perfect, but much better than demand economies. To ignore or deny this does not change the fact. Look at the mess that the Soviets left behind in Eastern Europe.

You seem to be arguing that all industrialization is bad ... you are simply wrong. The facts are that the environment is much cleaner now than it was a generation ago and virtually all commodities are priced lower, meaning that they are more readily available and supplies are not significantly depleted relative to projected demand.

You give us way too much credit; we couldn't change this planet's climate significantly even if we wanted to.

Relax, dude. The sky isn't falling!

Silly Apple stores ... don't give educational discounts ??? Methinks you are mistaken. I purchased an iBook and iPod with a student ID recently. Got the online pricing, plus $200.00 back on the iPod _after_ the discount ... woohoo!
