Looks like fun - I'll keep an eye out for them in my country. Must say, though, pretty blaaahhh website. Amongst other things, two movies: a very short animated gif and a 3 minute WMV of people just chucking the thing with generic 'exciting' music.
Perhaps if Newton was Indian, he would have had mystical insights about Buddhist scriptures. Maybe his brain was 'wired' in that special way that made him liable to mathematical insights and was also attempting to draw connections between unconnected things. Fine line between genius and madness and all that.
Ditto. I got 8 fps in the HTML5 version on a Core2Duo iMac running Safari 4.0.4 under 10.6.2 and hit around 100% CPU. Sometimes each core would be used equally, sometimes one would drop way down and the other would shoot up. For the SWF test I go about 19 fps and used 130% CPU, using both cores approximately equally all the time. Firefox was similar, but the flash test got 24fps. And TimeMachine kicked in when it started.
I can't believe it took this many posts in/. for someone to post this. All Woz needs to do is find a friend with a video camera, reproduce the problem, post it on YT and we're done.
There is a daily chaos, war and carnage in the microscopic world that we are not privy to and we have harnessed some of those weapons in our own antimicrobial war.
Beta lactam antibiotics are derived from a naturally occurring substance. In the true spirit of evolution, an organism may produce a substance that inhibits its competitors in the ecological niche it occupies. This gives it a competitive advantage. Likewise, if an organism mutates to become resistant to this substance, it can reassert itself in that niche.
When I first studied microbiology, conventional wisdom (shorthand for "I reckon this is true but don't really know") said that the genes that conferred beta-lactam resistance would exact too high a penalty on the Staph aureus making it unlikely to be found anywhere except in a hospital environment where it would be highly selected for. Well, community acquired MRSA turned that on its head. CA-MRSA can not only survive outside a hospital environment with no selective pressures, in some communities it thrives and becomes the dominant S. aureus infection.
Our antibiotics may have refined MRSA, but it would certainly exist with or without us.
Interesting point. The Catholics believe in transubstantiation of the host, while Protestants don't. I suppose a Protestant saying "transubstantiation is bullshit" could be seen to be blaspheming, whereas a Protestant saying "we don't believe in transubstantiation" wouldn't be.
I just read about the Jeanine Nicario case. Two men were convicted and sentenced to death for her murder. The murder that Dugan has now confessed to. Although Dugan is obviously the worst scum, the fact that 14 cops, prosecutors and deputies were indicted (They were found not guilty of anything naughty.) and nearly got two innocent men killed by the "Justice System" kind of puts me off the death penalty in general.

Ditto. I've been using Macs sine 1993 and I have heard that "one day my computer will get a virus" for the past 16 years. Still waiting. If virus writers couldn't be bothered with Macs because of low market share, yay for me. I couldn't care less what their motivation is. All I know is 'virus-free since '93'.
Mind you I still don't download those suspicious "movie codec" DMGs that certain sites assure me will bring me great bliss.
How about this:
"In the Philippines alone, cyanide divers squirt an estimated 165 tons of dissolved poison on some 33 million coral heads annually."
One hundred and sixty-five TONS of cyanide on one country's reefs. Every year. This info was published 13 years ago and was well known about before then. The fact that no-one who claims to be an eco-warrior, not Greenpeace not no-one, is shouting this from the rooftops is why I don't give a flying fig about what they say now. In the face of clear evidence, they are silent and yet they continue to rabbit on about irrelevant pH changes, or tiny shifts in temperature.
Reefs have dealt with climate change in the past by growing, changing and adapting. There is no single perfect set of conditions for a coral reef and this is a changing world. It's a bit more difficult to change if they're being poisoned and blasted though.
Personally, I gave up on casinos when I realized that they couldn't afford all that glitz and glamor unless they were winning a whole lot more than they were losing.
Ditto. I once blew a big sum of money on blackjack very quickly as a result of large amounts of beer. I gained two valuable insights: don't do anything important while drunk and casinos look really great because they are decorating with my money. I no longer gamble on anything. Except BoysTown Art Unions. I just love those prize homes and one day I'll win one.
That's what I was hinting at. IMO, they almost get there, but then get distracted by the next thing. In the words of Steve Jobs: "Real artists ship". If it's not in a box being sold in stores and in people's hands being used/abused/supported, then it's just a hobby.
That's why I posed the question. It wasn't me who said "Google has a reputation for excellence". I think that word is overused and what should have been said was "Google has a reputation for a great search engine and some other stuff..."

Who amongst us hasn't wanted to take a few potshots at radio hams. Them and their damned yagis.
Some are disappointed...
I wouldn't say I'm allergic to Peanuts, but Charlie Brown gives me the shits.
I am a doctor,
A real doctor on /. ! Cool. Could you take a look at this rash I have? Also, I'm WAAAAAY overdue for a prostate exam...

Looks marvellous. I can see a sci-fi movie based on this, something like The Cube. Or Fantastic Voyage. Mmmmm Raquel Welch.
Then they'll just pester you with REALLY dumb questions, like "why doesn't this file called runme.exe work on my computer?".
Safety feature.

Have I ever heard of rhetorical questions?!
No worries,

It was a resposne to the general comment "Corals *worldwide* are dying." But since you ask (and a fair question, too):
http://www.albionmonitor.com/9608a/dynamitefish.html "Misuse of cyanide in local fisheries is also spreading in Fiji, Papua New Guinea, Tonga, the Maldives, Solomon Islands and other Pacific coastal states."
How about this: "In the Philippines alone, cyanide divers squirt an estimated 165 tons of dissolved poison on some 33 million coral heads annually."

And no-one has considered that fishing with explosives or cyanide on coral reefs could be causing a problem? Interesting.
