  1. Why doesn't anyone think this is sick? on Armed Dolphins Released Into Gulf of Mexico · · Score: 1

I haven't read anyone writing in this thread one word about how sick this actually is.

    HELLO!
Let's summarize here, so humans are born into this universe and found other species in their proximity...and SOMEHOW between being born and now found ethical justifications to train another species with no vote of it's own to KILL other beings for the very purposes of the human beings themselves??!!!!

If i had a huge alarm right now with a _BIG RED FLASHING LIGHT_...i would certainly turn it on _RIGHT NOW_ !!!

I know in WWII dogs were trained to carry explosives and sneak under tanks to detonate themselves under the tanks, to my opinion that's pretty much the same kind of thing as the above, so i know this isn't new, but that's _NOT_ the point, i just cannot fathom what this must say about human kind or at the very least about the people who justify this or cooporate with this.

Suppose every race/species in the universe had a story and that story would start with being born into this universe, then humans would have at some point _NOT ONLY_ have a chapter of the fase they killed eachother(or other races), they'd _NOT ONLY_ have a chapter where they killed other species, they'd also have a chapter where they trained other species to kill "for them".

This seems to me so much like a host race training a slave species to kill for them, while the slave species has no voice in this neither might it not know what it's doing, which the host species uses/exploits to it's very own advantage.
If we not radically self-reflect here, be it on thinking, ideology, conduct, ethics etc etc, then there is no telling what chapter will be next.
We're here in this(universe) with other species...to me this feels like breaking some highly critical cosmic law.
Something you just _DO NOT DO_ !

(Maybe one could compare it to advancing to another higher level of misconduct....as if the levels of the status quo weren't already bad enough.)

While humans could have taken responsibility...it looks like it's going exactly the other way.
I think we could praise ourselves extremely blissfully lucky if things turn out well with us after all, i'm not saying it would not turn out positively, but that point seems just so far away when reading something like this.

  4. Hybrid cars subsidized by government(s) in Europe on California Wants GPS Tracking Device in Every Car · · Score: 2, Informative

Here in The Netherlands you get government subsidies when buying a hybrid, electric or hydrogen car.(Although the last two are not widely available yet)
This is because when you buy such a car, you as a citizen contribute to the reduction of CO2 and pollution in the air and therefor help the government in reaching Kyoto Protocol milestones.
So you actually get rewarded, because the government here wants to stimulate cleaner means of transportation and if i'm not mistaking a government that does not reach the Kyoto Protocol milestones will get fined, but i'm not sure about this.
So in a way you as a citizen here help the government in preventing itself from getting fined by Kyoto.

The subsidy is most often given in the way of a rebate when you purchase your car, which can vary from 800 to 4000 Euros(The Prius saves you about 4000($5200 US) last time a saw a tv-commercial about it), but can also be given in the form of tax-refunds.
So in short, when buying a prius here, they'll cut 4000 Euros($5200 US) from the price for you, because of the government subsidies

The same is true for household equipment, like washing machines, dryers, dishwashers etc etc. If they are energy efficient passing a certain threshold of efficiency(electricity and/or water), then you'll also get a rebate or tax refund...usually rangng from 100-200 Euros.

This seemed to work quite well, because in 2004 for the first time in the history of The Netherlands, less water was used in family homes on average...entirely because of more efficient household equipment.
And if i'm not mistaking more EU member governments work this way, because ussually the cleanest equipment(and maybe cars also) come with a certain sticker which is a seal of EU approvement.
I guess this is so, because Kyoto is not just an issue of one country, but countries working together.

  5. Source code of the randum number generators used on Random Number Generator That Sees Into the Future · · Score: 1

Could someone point me to a source of the source code of the random number generating algorithms that are used by the scientists?
As this is scientific research, the setup of the experiments are probably open right?(open for introspection by 3rd parties or general people)
So it's free for anyone to look into these algorithms...or is this not the case?

But if so, then i'd like to know where i can find the source code of the used algorithms of these machines.
And i do mean the exact algorithms/source code from these machines, not generally used source code used for programming....i'd like to see the algorithm behind the rand(); functions the scientists use.

    Thank you.

  6. Here's are my tips. on Setting up a High-Tech Language School? · · Score: 1

I learn(ed) Japanese on my own and have a few tips for you guys to make it more fun as learning Japanese or Mandarin for that matter is not horribly complex, but it is alot of information that a student gets to digest.
And the quickest way to learn things is if they are fun, so here's my 2 eurocents on this.

    1) I use(d) this software to learn my Hiragana, Katakana and Kanji and it is to my experience by far the best software i have seen to date to learn it.
    Click this link here:http://www.declan-software.com/japanese/
It consists of Readwrite Hiragana, Readwrite Katakana, ReadWrite Kanji, a Japanese Dictionary and a software set of flashcards.
About the Readwrite applications i'm simply thrilled...though as a dictionary i prefer a book and the flashcard application is also quite fun to learn with.
So i would definatly recommend you the 3 Readwrite applications and maybe the flashcards one...i'm sure the students will love that.

    2) To make things more fun for myself...i like to read Japanese comics, for the younger people this is maybe a bit more attractive then lets say Japanese poetry, although Japanese comics and poetry interest me both, i could understand that when you'd have a few younger students they'd appreciate the Japanese comics.
So maybe you might want to have some Japanese comics lying around and for others maybe some Japanese poetry books.
To have some Japanese newspapers and Magazines(of different topics for different people) lying around could also be quite useful.

    3) Movies...i'm a fan of Japanese movies and manga animation, there's almost nothing as fun as learning Japanese this way, so suppose for example when the students have learned some new stuff, when watching a film they could recognize the newly learned words and grammar(be sure to pick the films strategically coherent to the skill-level of the class) even if they don't fully understand the entire movie right away.
Sometimes i watched a Japanese movie and had no clue as to what they were saying, but some sentences got stuck in my mind and lateron when i learned more about the Japanese language i was able to translate the sentences that i remembered...giving a moment of "AHA!, so that was what they were talking about"...this is truly a joyous moment when you figure out stuff like this on your own.
So maybe a simple tv and dvd-player to sometimes watch a Japanese movie could come in handy...maybe when watching with the class the teacher could now and then pause and explain the what, how and why of what was said.
This keeps students interested because they are following the story of a movie(perhaps with sub-titles for the lesser skilled) and while enjoying themselves they get explaination from the teacher every so now and then.

    4) Access to chats and forums where real Japanese people hang out, maybe forums that concern some more of the serious matters, because when you would show a forum or chat where Japanese teenagers hang out....the language might be more lets say "non-traditional".
This way they have the possibility to really interact with Japanese people and get accustomed to the way they discuss matters.

    5) If it's not too stressful on the budget, maybe you could have some real flashcards to hand out to students so that they have something to practice with when they go home or sit in the bus or anything.

    6) Be sure to have some good Japanese dictionaries lying around, because there are so many of these and they all vary in ease of use, completeness etc etc.
I atleast haven't found 1 single Japanese dictionary that covered it all combined with an orderly layout and ease of use.
So maybe to have some dictionaries lying around that are "of different styles" would be handy, because as far as i know, everyone has it's favorite.(Some for example prefer different lookup-systems other than looking up characters by number of strokes)

In fact when Kazaa would have stayed in Dutch hands, then Kazaa would have stayed a legal p2p program.
And prosecuters from other countries would not have been able to convict it in court as illegal software.
As the case in The Netherlands against Kazaa was already won by the creators of Kazaa.
Furthermore p2p software in itself in The Netherlands by law in itself cannot be prosecuted as being illegal...because p2p software in itself does not cause the illegal act.
Also downloading of copyrighted media and software is considered legal in The Netherlands, this is because downloading is not considered as the actual act of infringing the copyright, that is done by the people who crack and rip media and software.

Kazaa was created by a team of programmers from The Netherlands(Europe). Eventually Kazaa was bought from them when they were entangled in a lawsuit against them. Because the Dutch creators didn't want to take any risk of losing this case in court and face the consequences of a conviction, they sold Kazaa to Sharman Networks in Australia. Ironically the Dutch creators of Kazaa won the lawsuit, but then it was already to late as they had already sold Kazaa.

Come on, the freedom you enjoy has merely become a blur of what it used to be. The US used to be the flagship of freedom in the world, yes Europeans recognize that. But we also recognize that this is no longer the case. Your intelligence agencies monitor everything, NSA, CIA and whatnot scan your e-mails, phonecalls and mobile phone coordinates, you people get visits from FBI when you use encryption higher than 512 bits to safe-guard your privacy. Now that kind of info you don't see on your biased news networks now do you? How dare you despise France when you fail to see the truth about your own country. Your economy is weak right now and still the US uses 25% of the entire world oil production. Reluctant to invest in new technologies like hydrogyn, solar power or nuclear fusion. Your cars are low tech and suck alot of gasoline and don't come close to German car technology, still you all want to drive European cars. You guys come over so hypocrit. You want to know what most Europeans think? Like 95%? They love America, they love it's people, but they really fucking hate your extreme-right wing government. I appreciate you take stance for the Jews, i appreciate the US tries to liberate all sorts of countries. But your motives are foul, lies and deception. You went into Iraq to find nuclear and biological weapons. Now the US weapon inspectors have given up their search, because it simply wasn't there. Then suddenly you switched your motive to free the Iraqi people. That is so low. Instead of admitting your government was wrong, you just switched motives. Which shows that your government motives to attack a country is just a curtian to cloud the true motives. Your true motives? We don't know, you don't even know. Oil?World Domination? Both? Now here's the real catch. China. Your government is peeing it's pants because now they see actually that the communist system is actually showing it's fruits. China is becoming the most powerfull nation in the world and they're communist. They have the fastest growing economy in the world, largest army in the world and are technologically catching up. Auwch...that's gotta hurt, because now your government is going to lose it's nr1 spot as unofficial world leader. What other country has military bases in almost every country in the world? The US has miliatry bases fucking everywhere. Now why would a nation do that? Just for fun? No, that gives them military influence all over the world. World Domination, big guns and bombs is what the US is all about right now. With a 7 trillion dollar dept and defense as your greatest expenses, it looks like your government is growing nervous. You destroyed your own economy to wage war for undisclosed motives. You think you know the truth? You know as much as USSR citizens did back in the cold war, your goverment told you shit. From Europe it looks like your country has become a police state. Oh be so proud, the things you are all so proud already dissapeared 50 or 60 years ago. Once you had a great nation dwelling in true freedom, but what's left is just a mere shadow of itself. A military state trying to spread their ideology with military force and placing military bases all over the world, because they can't hold the pace of China's economy and technological advancement anymore which is growing like nuts. If you can't beat with your economy, you beat em military, that's the philosophy eh? Big guns, bombs, but little brain. And then you dare to talk about France? Offcourse they aren't all clean themselves. But right now, France is doing much better when it comes to true freedom/liberty and economy. Freedom fries....hmmpfff.
