My old boss/friend that died many years ago made about 29k as an EE for the later Apollo missions. That would be about 300k of todays dollars.
6k was what the average engineer was making including civil engineers of which many are unemployeed today. The hard science engineers like EE, Chemical, and Mechanical Engineers were making like 14k about twice what they make today in buying power.
Engineers on average made a bunch more from 1939-1968 than they do today. The main thing is that most engineers today don't have a job doing engineering. My grandpa was a Petrol and Mechanical Enginner for over thirty years and had saved over a million dollars. Can you say that about engineers today without a pension or less than half the buying power. Also he was moved into an office manager job in the 80's before he retired. So from 1978 he didn't even get to do much of any engineering work.

1. Develop some simple application 2. Buy a Domain and Hosting 3. Put the app on the website. 4. Edit resume. 5. Submit a resume with 2 years experience.
Your lack of experience is not your problem. That is just the excuse. Its just hard to get a job right now. It will continue to be hard for about 5-6 more years. The inflation will eventually hit hard and force India and China to change thier insane exchange rates. Then your degree will be like gold like it was in the mid nineties.

Sounds like fun. I quit my career as a Software Engineer to become a Militia Man, but the government has been a big pain about giving me gun licensing and such. I currently live in a motel, but I'm still mainly fearless at 31. I don't make much at $10.75/hr sorting boxes and putting them into a truck. It's better than making $1/hr on a freelance website, or working 100+ hour work weeks as a Developer for jerks that turn a 55k/yr job into less than $12/hr given the hours.

You can use Jet or other Native compiler for Java. It can help obfuscate the code as well. Native is go for Java.
