guess you missed out on all those Chapter 11 green investments that Obama and Chu (he has a Nobel price you know!) have made. So in fact the US has subsidized both the buyers and manufacturers and probably a few others inbetween.
First, where would gas prices be without domestic drilling? Second, why are you inflation adjusting the price of gasoline when it is one of the largest contributors to inflation? Third, there can be no long term analysis of the price of gasoline as the regulations (state and federal) have created a disjointed market. Fourth, refiners have tried to switch to more sour grades of oil only to see WTI sweet overflowing in Cushing with limited places to go Fifth, this ignores all affects of USD appreciation and depreciation which play a large part in the cost of the input (oil)
Suits come in many colors and styles and yet are easily identified as suits. And ties come in everything from dull and boring to omfg. So there is still room for individuality.
Yes there are circumstances where suits and ties are an unnecessary formality. A warehouse would be one example or a factory line. But even there, there should be some requirements (uniform in your terms) on what is acceptable and what is not. A lot of places will require wearing a corporate shirt and your choice of long pants as an example.
While you went the iSteve route, XP and 7 are very stable and accomplish what just about any user wants. As you have noted, there are software advantages - both from the availability standpoing but also another key point: If Microsoft sends a patch for XP or 7, it does not break my already installed software. Unfortunately, in the Linux/BSD (which I prefer) world, updates to libraries and kernels are almost a 100% guaranty that you will break your installed software. Likewise, installing new software often ends up with a gigantic vicious upgrade loop. On windows you rarely meet new software which demands that you upgrade some other part of your system or libraries or that when you do, your old installed stuff craps out.
And while one can try to live off of binary/prebuilt packages, those are likely to leave you just as hanging as building from source - something that very few end users ever want to go near.
*nix on desktop will never be acceptable for wide adoption unless developed and managed by a central authority akin to what Apple did when they took some BSD core stuff and churned out OSX. (And even when I did use an iBook under an earlier gen of OSX I still found XP to be the easier to deal with when it came to software installs and updating drivers or other system type stuff.
will undoubtedly proove so reliable that disk drive warranties are also shrunk down to at most 1 year and eventually the target 90 days to be in compliance with all other consumer electronics.
ah.. welcome to the real world. And a suit (or at least a jacket and tie) ensures the company's employees present a minimally serious appearance to clients, competitors as well as other employees. Do you really want your potentially big client showing up for a presentation and having Bob from accounting walking around in shorts and a tee with pit stains because it is hot outside? Some will say 'oh you can lessen the standards and still look nice.' Well, the further you get from what is clearly as yes/no met type of standard, the more problems you have. What do you mean my shirt isn't nice enough? Or whats wrong with these pants? Etc.
The ideal would be to have some kind of rf or bar code on the biz card as well to facilitate easy electronic capture. But I would always prefer a card as I don't have to worry about losing contact info if my phone goes brain dead or some other electronic system fails. One can also (as pointed out earlier) discretely put a notation of some kind on the back about the person or meeting and not have to try to type similar into your phone during the meeting.
No, you are incorrect as is the original post. Ulam provided the necessary insight about using compression for the 'Super'. Prior to that, Teller was going nowhere with his design and had already shelved the 'alarm clock'. Sakharov came up with a similar design to the alarm clock and called it 'layer cake'. What is unknown is how much the Soviet program benefited from stolen materials from the American programs. It is almost certain they had the details of work Teller and Fuchs had done.
Finally, there was a lot of engineering and physics work beyond the overall concept of how the weapon could work. Teller was not a part of this and those individuals, such as Carson Mark, also deserve much credit.
First off, anyone making comments on college or higher level math in this thread did not RTFA - its about kiddies, not college kids. K-8.
So why are we even talking about such stupidity? Has the "math" taught to K-8 today suddenly changed from.. 10 years ago? 30? 100? 300? Hmm.. lets see.. add, subtract, multiply, divide. Fractions. Percentages (same thing). "Word" problems. Maybe a touch of very very simple geomentry.
There is no need for a new mathbook for these kids. In fact, they would probably best be taught by grabbing one which was used in the 1920s or 1950s. Just wondering.. can your grandparents (or in some cases, if alive - great grandparents) add, subtract, multiply and divide? Or were the books and teaching "methods" just so atrocious back then that everybody ended up a dolt? Whats that? test scores ahve declined! Well maybe going back to what was used when the scores were higher might be a better thing to do? When in a hole the first thing to do is stop digging!
Bottom line: nannyism. school boards ptas publishers state and federal governemnt alll trying to find ways to justify their existence by fucking up what already worked quite well.
What of the LTS Precise Pangolin Beta 1? Nobody comments on that? I assume this is some variant of stock Ubuntu? Is there a problem with Ubuntu b# (or a# for alpha)? Is all that other stuff necessary or just an attempt at being funny or cute?
as Linus is on the warpath this week, I think he should shoot whomever came up with Ubuntu 12.04 LTS Precise Pangolin Beta 1 So tenths aren't enough we must go to hundreds then have abbreviatiations and silly names and then Beta (isnt that what the 0.0X is for?) and the cheery on top, "1". Ubuntu has jumped the naming shark
not only a drama queen but pretty foolish too. A business laptop should be locked down. If a user is going to need certain external hardware than it should require an administrator to verify why and do what ever is required for the install. Basically Linus is saying 'if it is inconvenient it should go!' Instead of moaning he should just use a distro with looser standards and not cry about one that is intentionally secure.
Uncle with the OS do overs. Win 7 has been out less than three years. Heck I still have two desktops running XP because a) it works and b) I don't have to buy new hardware just to make the OS work. Win 7 is stable enough that they should be doing incremental point releases to that and not wholesale changes like win 8. Who is crying for this crap any how? And you mean there was no way to modify 7 to work as desired on a tablet? Hard to believe. Freaking NetBSD runs on damned toasters and mega servers for gods sake!
if it is 2am and you are tired, maybe you shouldn't be driving at all? Yes I will agree there is some reasonable point at which we can say 'you are probably impaired' and that point was 0.12 for a very long time. Given the minimal reduction in acciddnt/death stats with a move to 0.8 it seems pretty obvious unless you are a member of MADD that lower BAC != less bad things happening. MADD (and supporters) are on a witch hunt and will not be happy until there is prohibition. Did not one of their founder say this? I do disagree that we should be penalizing the drinking (a 'crime' based on probability) as opposed to some actual violation (which may not even happen) such as reckless driving, property damage, etc. But that is another argument entirely.
To the other comment reply - DUI laws are HYPE because they do not work. They have not had a meaningful affect on the "problem".
Bottom line is that our society has become so pussified that any risk, no matter how small, is not to be tolerated
So with 15 million annual sales of cars and light 'trucks' and.. being optimistic.. $100 added cost, the nannies are going to burden the entire eekonomy with $1.5 BILLION in additional expense because 17,000 people were not more careful either walking behind a vehicle or backing the car out? Whom ever is proposing this deserves to be backed up and run over. Perhaps if people parents in particular too more care we wouldn't have this 'problem'
To put this "problem" in better light: Estimates are there are a combined 255 MILLION cars and light trucks in the US. there are 17,000 accidents involving backups each year. That means that 99.33% of vehicles are NOT involved in any back up incident.
For those old enough to remember it, this is just a more sophisticated time sharing system. Which undoubtedly has some advantages for some customers/users. But unlike days past, there is little sense of security concerning not just the survival of the companies involved, but survival of your data and business plans. What is your fall back if you move everything to the cloud? Apologies to the ladies, but yes thats you standing their with your dick in your hand trying to figure out how to recreate your own IT solution. And given the current environment where security either takes a back burner or is just difficult to guaranty, who are you going to go down with? The Cloud provider or your own shop that you have control over?
Can I just say fuck 0.8 now? Ok? This has all been perpetuated and forced upon us by MADD.
In the United States the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) estimates that 17,941 people died in 2006 in alcohol-related collisions, representing 40% of total traffic deaths in the US. NHTSA states 275,000 were injured in alcohol-related accidents in 2003.[1] The Bureau of Justice Statistics estimated that in 1996 local law enforcement agencies made 1,467,300 arrests nationwide for driving under the influence of alcohol, 1 out of every 10 arrests for all crimes in the U.S.,
So injured + killed is order of 300,000 Out of nearly 1.5 million arrests. And what multiple of "drunk" drivers are not pulled over or not arrested? 5X? 10X? 100x?
In 1982 there were 26,173 alcohol related fatalities in the US. So in going from a BAC of 0.12 to 0.8 a whopping drop of... 8,000. When you factor in that cras today are much safer and the larger number of miles driven it becomes clear that DRUNK DRIVING LAWS ARE ALL HYPE. Most people drive worse while rushing to work, eating food in the car or any other number of things. It is time to put the limits back where they were, stop the witch hunt (apolgies to my pagan friends) and go after those who truly are drunk.
Where do you live? In the US that is probably only true in major metro area and even then not necessarily for the 'consumer' grade service. In the end its all about money that will be lost. In rural areas which maybe serviced by a small regional or independent company the loss of that income might preclude them from providing internet services at a "reasonable" price, among other considerations.
is the abuse of these additional resources. What was the base size of win 3.1? win 95? Linux kernel? System 7.X? Distro size? And what are they today for Win 7 (or soon 8)? Linux? OS X? Don't say you've never sat there and said 'why does this pos run like a dog?' eventhough you have the Ubersystem? The idea of programming for speed or efficiency is frowned upon today because of the perception that hardware performance will always improve just a little faster than the slothful use of resources will slow things down. Sure memory is faster and more plentiful, for example, but when you are needing to move in and out so much more code and data isn't it a wash?
Just because humans had to operate under those conditions in the past does not mean that sleeping in that manner was better for health in the long run. Not getting chased by wooly mammoths and saber tooth tigers is another thing we seem to be doing better without.

Stop trying to "fix" it because every time you do, you just end up fucking it up even more.

For those interested, Tomasso gives a good run down on the report here
With PONIES of course!

yes I stand corrected on the 12.04

If you and your IT dept. did not consider these things before doing a million dollar presentation you deserve to lose it.
