  1. TV Shows on iPod on TiVoToGo For iPods and PSPs · · Score: 4, Funny

I've been carrying shows around on my iPod for years. I've got a dozen episodes of Farscape sitting on it right now. I watch shows from my iPod on my Laptop when I'm on the road. I have not bought a Video iPod yet and think I'd prefer to watch on a big laptop screen anyway.

  2. Re:The reports of TiVo's demise... on TiVo Starts Testing "Pop-up" Ads · · Score: 1

The images for the ads are downloaded during nightly updates. Being a linux system it seems like it would be a trivial hack to go through and modify the bitmaps to half or a quarter of their original size. Taking this a step further, just replace all the ad images with your own 1 pixel image and ignore it. According to Tivo's online forum, they're submitting an update to the VH1 ad having issues that replaces the current image with a transparent image (100% transparent). They're still working out the bugs on delivery, but I don't see the problem. Of course, I've never used the fast forward button, I use the 30 second skip. Select - Play - Select - 3 - 0 - Select Done.

I have a series 1 and a DirecTivo, the patch will wipe a couple of PPV's that I haven't watched yet (in six months), but it doesn't bother me a bit. I should have waited until they hit HBO anyway. If you're a DirecTivo owner and disagree with the patch, it's easy enough to disable software updates on a hacked box.

  5. VI Rules! on Co-founder Joy to leave Sun · · Score: 1

Didn't Bill write VI back at Berkley? I love VI, it's still my editor of choice. I started using it for it's designed purpose -- remote editing over a 300 baud modem. It's really an elegant editor when you get used to it. GVIM is the current version that I'm using and I love it! Did I mention that I'm a VI fan?

  6. The Horror on Microsoft Worms Crash Ohio Nuke Plant, MD Trains · · Score: 4, Informative

It is horrifying that critical systems such as Nuclear (or Nucular as W. says) power plant safety systems have been compromized by rampant known issues with Microsoft Security I believe that it is worse that such critical systems are not better administered. Heads should roll in the IT department. This is also an indicator of how this Nuclear power plant has treated Homeland Security in general. Having such systems exposed to the internet is just plain negligent.

Wasn't there a Wolfenstein on Apple back in the 80's? I spent many hours playing Wolfenstein and have played all of id's stuff since. My wife saw me playing Quake III and said, isn't that the game you were playing back in '92? I guess other than the pretty graphics, it's basically the same game to the uninitiated, but I'll continue to play FPS as a stress reliever :-)
