  2. only hitch: space is not a vacuum on Warp Drive Might Be Less Impossible Than Previously Thought · · Score: 3, Interesting

There's about 1 hydrogen atom / proton per cubic meter. Even at sub-c speeds, they create seriously radioactive friction. And running into a grain of sand at some % of c would have the effect of a large bomb. So, you not only have to warp space, you have to move the matter IN the space, and do it at >c velocity. Since matter can't move >c, you can't get the protons and occasional neutrons and sand grains and other interstellar detritus out of the way. A grain of sand hitting anything at 10c would be catastrophic, and within a few hours of colliding with the interplanetary and interstellar medium would turn the ship into a glowing radioactive dead thing.

You can go on fucking Amazon and get a 6 TB RAID for $376, mmmmkay? So, all you need to do is get eight of these little puppies and that will give you 48 TBs of RAIDed drives. It will cost you all of $3008. And then you just need to hire some junior flunkie to keep an eye on the thing. Pay him or her, say $50k. It's not a tough job. So, with benefits etc. it will cost, say $100k to hire them, and that includes buying the arrays and a computer to track them. Now, let's do the math. This is going to cost less than 1/2 of 1/100th of 1 percent of your budget to protect all of your precious data, in a RAID no less.

Face it - the DEA is either lying, completely full of bullshit, or so hopelessly incompetent they should all be fired.

It's nearby. They have a housing bubble, but they also have all the oil and fresh water, so as long as people need energy and are thirsty, Canada's on top of it. Toronto, Vancouver, and Montreal are expensive, but only as expensive as Chicago or LA area. Thanks to all the oil being pulled out of Alberta, Canada will get warmer over time. Eventually we'll all be up around the Arctic Circle, and most of that is in Russia. Greenland is still under ice for our lifetimes, so Canada's really the easy choice.

Now, if you have some means to move, Australia is pretty cool, but I'd focus on Melbourne and points south. Much nicer, cooler, weather. The economy is rockin' but the soil is weak and it has very little fresh water.

If you don't mind isolation and are more family oriented and neighbourly, New Zealand could work for you.

Good luck. I left San Francisco for Toronto in 2006 because I saw what was coming down the pike. Sold my place that I bought for $375k for $890k. Was able to put a REALLY nice down payment on a place here in Toronto, and bought a small cottage in Prince Edward County for cash. So, if housing prices go down 20, 30% I don't really care. The poor fuckers who bought my place in SF are now underwater on their mortgage. Be smart. Look ahead. Look at basic strengths. But do get out of the USA. That place is fucking doomed.
