I think 90% of new SO/HO machines will have Vista by mid-2008; whether they asked for it or not.
See, based on assumptions. For all you know, '07 will go down in history as the great MS exodus. Besides which, most corps won't be ready to even look at Vista until next Decade, and IMO as the guy that does PC-fixit house calls, pretty much the same can be said for the consumer market. They all have relatively fast, fairly reliable XP PCs. Until they're forced, they won't touch it, and a few of those will downgrade to XP (a process I've already helped accomplish for a couple of clients).
Did the submitter know this is/.? Plenty of us here think the answer is yes, and have been thinking that for a loooong time. I'm more interested in anone here who thinks Vista will do well, and why. So step right up and change my mind, let me know why you think Vista will eventually dominate. And I need a better argument than "800-pound gorilla".
despite recently announced security flaws, HID actually makes decent card-key equipment. If you have a ton of money and the technical wherewithal to work around the (to my knowledge as-yet-unpatched) security issues their system will do exactly what you want.
Not if the responsibility is given to a select few "higher-tier" personel, and even less problematic if part of their duties is a round of the remote stations every six months for a routine check anyway.
About time somebody got that idiot to quiet down. Wonder if he can sit on his hands like a good boy or if he's just going to harass somebody else in the meantime. I'm not holding my breath.

Which is why, in the Windows world, people who manually edit the registry are looked upon as gods. If you can sit and stare at that all caps shit for more than 5 minutes without your eyes bleeding, you're a freaking hero in my book.
Actually, I think it could, they just have to get their timing right, have a decent distro or 2, and a little cash in the bank to weather the storm. If done right, it would put them in a great position before the inevitable meltdown happens.
Think about it from dell's point of view: Would you rather lose some money and market share while helping stake a solid and tenable future position, or watch your supplier (MS) drive everybody to the competition (Apple)? Dell might not make as much profit with a PC loaded with Ubuntu rather than Windows (at least int he short term), but they make no money if the customer buys a Mac.
Not only is that the only thing worth saying about the subject, but it's exactly how it's going to progress.
Not knocking Slashdot here, it is news for nerds, but we all know what's really going to happen, and envisioning a clean slate internet is a waste of time IMO.
It must have improved (and Cringely must be right). I troubleshooted a client's Vonage problems a couple of years ago (turned out his router was the problem). Anyway, once I was done fixing and tweaking, he was faxing to his heart's content.
However, this was (at least at the time, don't know now) a "straight" ISP: "here's your bandwith, pay your bill on time, laters.", which leads me to conclude that Cringely is spot on.

No kidding. As someone who hopped on literally days after the first version was released for the Mac (Still before OSX no less), it's been really educational to watch a once fine piece software get steadily bloatier over the years. Maybe the critics are right, maybe Apple is the next Microsoft.
Screw that, we finally have a terrorist group that figured out how to do something a litle more involved than mixing diesel and fertilizer. I want a paid half-cyborg bodyguard, a fat paycheck for illegal hacking and my Ono-Sendai deck!
Where you been? The rich and the powerful rarely do hard time (Watergate, anyone?). You could be Marx or Barry Goldwater, if you have money and/or influence, you get to walk.
But then, you seem to think there's substantive difference between Democrats and Republicans, so I can understand your confusion.
Good lord, you are one funny fucker. I just got done reading a dozen or so comments about how maybe, just maybe, we had some pretty serious malfeasance going on here, and cries of "But!" were only going to ring ever more hollow, and along comes the exact "quick link and a snarky line"-type post that offered precisely nothing.
The left wing treats the Constitution as a "living document"
Yeah, like chaining yourself to a an almost 300-year old piece of parchment was a great idea. Yeah, I read your sentence about the legislature, but 3/4 (or 2/3) majority? Fuck that noise.
the best argument against impeaching Bush is "President Cheney".
Hell no, and I'll tell you why: He just doesn' have the patience (or stupidity, take your pick) for the job. As a "go-to" guy who operates behind the scenes and gets shit done, he's probably the best in the world.
But, doing press conferences, diplomatic trips, all the usual banal crap the Prez has to do on a daily basis, I think would either drive him towards his final heart attack or a murder spree in the West Wing.
So yeah, bring on President Dick. He'll stab an intern through the heart with a fork before his first week is done.
You know what the really sad thing is? All of the games listed there that I've played, save two (Pinball Dreams and Lemmings), I played on other platforms (NES, SNES, Genesis, PC).
Oh, and where the hell is Populous/Populous 2? Those games alone would have made me run out and get an Amiga if I'd had the cash. Talk about addictive.
You got a deal. Although maybe I should adjust to sub $300. Either way, it's been a while since I've seen a customer with more than 512MB RAM.
especially as any new machine will run vista fine.
;)
Ummm, yeah, if you discount all the people who buy the entry-level sub-$500 PCs, which is something like 90% of the consumer market.
but in 3-4 years from now, it will seem funny to have written off vista.
Not funny at all, probably more like +1 Insightful
That's an 800-pound gorilla answer.

Talk about damning with faint praise.

1) Spell "Asimov" correctly when submitting an article to Slashdot.
Zonk, hand in your geek badge immediately.
That's alright, we may not have the Chronic-les of Narnia, but we still have this sublime SNL short. (WARNING: NSFW and very, very funny.)

Preaching to the choir here. Would love to see that implemented more widely. It's a better form of democracy.

Democrats!=liberal. The sooner everybody realizes this, the sooner we can actually have a liberal party in the US.

Entrenched law is always a bad thing.
This double standard crap has got to go.
Damn straight. Now, go find me a black millionaire nationally-syndicated talk-show host who makes racist remarks.
Make it quick though, I gotta go see a guy about a thing.

and then a white radio personality makes a racist remark
Fixed that for ya.
