Or they're just marking it up because banks are effectively a monopoly? I don't know about you, but I was reliably informed that banks made money by basically being an aggregator: Once you have a few thousand "small" eggnests, you could leverage the whole, usually in the form of large corporate loans which you would charge interest on, enabling you to make a profit, and pass a small fraction of it to the people who's capital you just used. It was a proper symbiotic relationship, mutually advantageous to both parties.

Now they just squeeze you for everything they can. I understand doing things costs money, but I was under the distinct impression I wasn't going to be footing so much of the bill.

It's like the publishers shouted a description to the artist while they drove by really fast and he couldn't make out most of it with all the engine noises and the Doppler shift.

This is an often repeated lie on slashdot. While certain FPS games may experienc lower framerates on Vista, almost all normal end user experiences are faster, in many case significantly faster. Every computer I've upgraded to Vista sees a significant performance boost, although every one of those computers has at least 1 gig of ram. No one will call you because Vista is a huge improvement for the average user. The average user LIKES Vista. And you, unfortunately, are just a loser.

    Try harder, troll.

Umm, this is slashdot. There are no MS fanboys. MS doesn't inspire irrational enthusiasm. Vista may not be as revolutionary as MS would like people to believe, but it is a huge step in the right direction and will assuredly be with us for at least the next 5 years.

Due, you really need some practice. For someone with such a low UID, there's no excuse for such a shoddy and transparent troll attempt.

    What's wrong with Vista?

I'll tell you exactly what's wrong with Vista. If you, like many averages shmoes around the world, are in the market for a new PC, you're stuck with Vista. Nothing necessarily wrong with that, except that the shmoe will, as usual, get a $500 dell or a $300 Emachines. Why the hell is he going to spend a grand or more on a PC? Of course, these are pitiful little Duron/Celeron boxes with way too little RAM, lots of bloatware for extra sluggishness, and of course lowest-bidder parts.

So he'll take that PC home, fire it up, and be pretty much instantly pissed. Not only is it slow and sluggish as hell, but this time he has to contend with a lot of new features that he has no clue or experience about. Depending on his patience, he'll plug away for a day or a few, but eventually he'll call me, or someone like me.

Now, this is the important part: He's used to XP. He's used to an OS, that while sucky, worked well enough for him, was relatively speedy, so why can't he just have that? Why does he have to have something replaced that worked just to put up with this shit?

So I will perfrom a downgrade, and I'll happily use a pirated copy to do it, too. As far as I'm concerned, he paid for the OS already, I couldn't give a crap about specific licenses for specific machines. This guy just wants to get on with his life, and that is the service I provide.

Did my first downgrade a couple of days ago, and I expect to be doing several more this year.

Now I know you'll all be yelling about getting sufficient RAM for his machine, going in and cutting some of the bloat instead of resorting to piracy for the backwards step, but if you're going to say all that, it's obvious you don't do a lot of house calls.

Oh, and before I get modded into oblivion by the MS fanboys, look into your hearts. You know I'm right.

Beats the hell out of me. I like it here too. The people that bitch about /. seem to fall into a few categories. You've got the pro troll, whose sole job is to talk shit everywhere, so he can be easily ignored. You've got the old-timers who got pissed off when this site grew from a chummy little linux hangout into what is is now. These people can safely be ignored as well. While you can easily argue that /. has changed, it's a lot harder to say whether or not the 2007 edition is any better or worse than the '97 version.

Last, but not least, you've got the idiots who seem to think that ever since /. got sold off to VA (or whoever it was), nothing on this site can be trusted, the editors are all paid shills, etc. Some of these criticisms have some actual validity, but bitching about them constantly on main page articles is just wasting everybody's time.

I'll take this opportunity to welcome you here, as well as mention that we're not all crazy, there are a few pools of sanity in the great ocean that is Slashdot.
