Why does everyone keep saying that we will all have HDTV in 2006. There is nothing mandating an upgrade to HDTV (16x9 1080i) in 2006. What is mandated is that the broadcasters must use the new spectrum for a digital signal, DTV. It could be 4x3 480i and probably will be. Broadcasters will probably prefer to output four SDTV signals (they can slice up the bandwith that way) than one HDTV signal. For one thing they can probably generate more ad revenue that way.

Why pay for the NFL Sunday ticket for instance just becasue you want to catch your home team and you just moved out of state! No more NFL blackouts. We can all watch the Yankees all season long - or the Tigers (go Tigers!). Cable companies will lose customers to sat which can give people a greater choice.

I don't like this law and the newspaper analogy is a good way to illistrate the problem and why it isn't fair. But to stike it down would totally ruin the way the TV sports market works. With that said, I'm all for it!!

I grew up in MI and went to Michigan State and I just moved to Minneapolis. I want to catch all of the MSU Football, Hockey, Basketball I can. I also want to watch the Red Wings, Pistons, Lions, and Tigers games. Today I can't. Maybe tomorrow I can. Go echostar.

But I really do think that the movie studios are afraid of HD-DVDs. Heck, almost all were afraid of DVDs at first until they realized that they could sell the same movie to the guy who already owened the VHS version. They have made a lot of money doing so and they hadn't even learned from the whole Beta-VHS debacle.

Sure, OTA is free and clear. But today, most of us can't record in HD. You can because you have the Hipix. When will Tivo be able to record HD? That's the kicker.

The other side of this is of course us, the consumers. If Hollywood actually went with HD-DVD then we would all have to go out and buy new players. People love DVDs now but look at how many still use VHS. It will take a long time to switch over. It may never happen. Most people don't have a display capable of reproducing the resolution of HD. Why should they invest the money in the players and such when they can't reap the benifits. So, it's a double edged sword. They movie studios won't put out the goods in HD becuase few will buy. But no one will invest until the studios put out. But, I digress....

  9. What about HDTV? on Industry Agrees On Next Gen Unified DVD Standard · · Score: 2, Insightful

/.ers. What about HDTV? Current DVD media is not big enough to hold a feature length movie in high definition. With 27Gb that will be possible.

But, will Hollywood let it? They don't want you to be able to buy a HD-DVD - play it back on you 50" plasma + home theater and never go to the movie house. They don't want you to take that same HD-DVD and make 50 copies for your friends. They don't want you to copy the DVD to your PC and share it with the world on the Internet. You can bet they won't let HD enter this media. And that's too bad because what else are you going to put on your Scream XI DVD?

True there is already D-VHS. But who wants to mess with the size of tapes with no random access! Besides, I've heard they movie studios are trying to kill D-VHS too.

I'm sure that AMD will fix this bug in their next Rev (if they haven't already).

There are tons of bugs in everything. No one is perfect. But think about it this way. This is a MINOR bug. You will never get the "wrong answer" when a simple workaround is in place. You will never have to make a critical decision based upon bad data. You just need more TLB misses to get there. Minor, minor, minor.

Maybe AMD should have communicated this problem a little better. I'm sure they have tried to learn from the huge Intel debacle from the first Pentium. But there, you could get the "wrong answer".
