Here is a tricky thing when sharing stuff over the internet. If only one person at a time is accessing that content licence, is it really an infringement. Digital data is digital data, whether from a player to a nearby amp to a speaker, or whether from a player to a very distant amp to a speaker. So creating a library, that only one person at a time can access, all with legal content is not different from lending someone your cd, they listen to it and then return it you and then you or some one else can listen to that one legally licensed copy.
Added to this, from what I understand, all Australia government systems required to be secure for national security reasons are air-gapped and no wireless. I would assume that extends to all systems that need to be really secure. Do need the internet for that service, then don't connect it to the internet.
As for honey pots, piggy back them onto tasty web IP ranges, develop a well know reputation for doing so and hopefully doing it successful and you will cut back on incursions. Not one or two honey pots but thousands of them all hooked up via 'hardware monitoring' back to an incursion, evaluation and evidence gathering network. Don't piss about, create a multi-agency IT support and investigation centre.
Well, ain't that a lie, can't walk down a city street without hearing that crap or seeing MPAA content blaring from shop fronts and endless marketing assaulting you from every direction promoting that shite. So if you wont to be free from it, in all of it shapes and forms you are trapped inside, sitting in the dark with your eyes shut and your ears plugged, starving, as far as I know you can even copyright a recipes;).
As for the DOin-J, if they reckon that case and it's settlement is so valid, than why haven't they been prosecuting cases on similar circumstantial basis with a complete lack of any direct evidence between the accused and the claimed crime and, where the people providing the testimony and the people prosecuting the case all have a direct unquestionable financial motive to falsify evidence and where in other cases similar evidence has been rejected and found to be wildly invalid.
I don't even live in the US and this person sounds like the scum of the earth, basically torturing innocent people to get elected and feed his unnatural urges, the people in that substandard system are mostly awaiting trial and have not been convicted of any crime. All he does is enrich the lawyers in Arizona after they file successful suit after successful suit and, the foolish hick electorate are too dense to realise how much he is costing the.
It pretty much sounds like if you actually do support law and order you do have a lot to fear from what seems to be the most corrupt sheriffs office in the US, of course if you are a lawyer it is also by far the post profitable sheriffs office in the US. People from all around the world can now look into what is going on in the US and it is idiots like this that really do demonstrate that the US is not a stable democracy, that justice comes second to profit, sadism is not only more acceptable than nudity it is celebrated and, blatant visible corruption can survive for years.
The whole states rights thing in the US seems to be a real mess because while there are some really well run and advanced states in the US while some other states seem pretty fucked up and as you go from the north west of the US to the south east there is a definitive deterioration in every qualitative measure.
Wikipedia has they ultimate in self regulation, if it sucks, people will simply stop using it. At the moment it is pretty damn popular with end users and it serves it's purpose well.
Besides all you wikipedia grumps can cheer up, another current thread in slashdot http://news.slashdot.org/story/09/08/13/1450220/Open-Textbooks-Win-Over-Publishers-In-CA?art_pos=14 pretty well marks the end of wikipedias dominance. Such is life, technology moves on and open text books will grow into an open accredited encyclopaedia where qualifications are a requirement prior to any contributions and all work will be subject to constant never ending peer review.
Wont be as much fun as wikipedia and wikipedia certainly wont die, they will just coexist side by side. Of course one will be accepted for use in school (primary, secondary and tertiary) and can be referenced and the other will be considered purely recreational but, wikipedia will always be the driver that made it possible.
The best thing about free electronic text books, is that students with skills can now contribute. Just think of all those master's theses and doctoral theses going to waster (although some should). Now those students work can be incorporated right back into the teaching process and they can start to establish themselves.
These textbooks go hand in hand with the digital education revolution, it is really mind boggling to think that the cost of a fraction of the required textbooks as free electronic textbooks will pay the full cost of smartbooks running FOSS.
Schools will certainly change over the next ten years as they shift to a free electronic curriculum, FOSE (free open source - everything) is certainly changing the world.
The reality is, if they are paranoid and incapable of administering their servers by themselves, generally often because they have privacy invasive tendencies, they are screwed. If you are going to question the integrity of your administrator because you don't really trust them, it is time to roll up your sleeves and do it yourself.
Of course, that leads you right into a trap, don't trust your system administrator, how about the computer manufacturer (best way to spy is via hardware not software), your ISP (they can monitor all your communications), your cleaners (they have out of hours access to your hardware) and if you don't own the building the landlord (they can set up all sorts of monitoring equipment, pin hole cameras etc, no password is safe).
If you want to use remote admin, go mid size, check their reputation, ask them how their employees connect to the servers they administer, check what records they keep and, check the notifications of system access they provide. Generally speaking you want to phone them and then confirm the work via email in both directions, then they call when they actually connect and then a final email when the work is complete detailing all access, work done and who did the work. You would also want them to do some random and regular system reviews and monitoring (non intrusive and automated), to check for security faults (with those access logs forwarded on a regular basis). People like these will not be cheap but you will inevitably find they can do about ten times the work in the same amount of time as the cheaply and do it far more reliably.
Definitely go a Linux server and save the money you would have spent on software and spend it on really reliable system admins. To be brutally blunt I have found Linux admins, especially the specialist companies, to be head and shoulders above windrone admins (it is pretty obvious that the best admins pick Linux because they know what they are doing and they know the advantages).
As always the opposition party is the opposition. The will always side with the general public to gain votes, gain seats and gain a higher pay packet. What voting for the Greens well and truly demonstrates is the real power of the ballot box in Australia and the ability of Australian politics to resist corporate pressure at this stage not enough but it is growing.
Three strikes, is dead in Australia, filtering is dying, ISP spying is a no show, all that is happening is the Australian government is being pressured by the US government and the not so free trade agreement, which is basically being used as political blackmail.
It looks very likely that the greens will gain a lot of public support because the right wing abused their power not so long back and the left wing just ain't left enough. Right and left is really starting to look like minority rich (plus gullible poor) versus everybody else (middle class the survivors and working class with a brain). The internet is driving power and control back to the people and there seems to be a real fight on around seizing back that power by corporations and mass media, that had it for 30 years and they really do not want to let go.
Benefit of the doubt, goes to the defendant, don't try to wiggle or deceive, prove they can not remember the password beyond a shadow of doubt, yeah, like good luck with that or do you claim esp abilities and are assuming the 'we say so' approach.
Computers are of course much more reactive to the most minor disturbances. A single neutrino passing through a transistor can alter it's state. One bit out in a calculate and like a house of cards, the whole other millions of lines of code falls down. Computers are terribly fragile and unlike missiles, fire once and it either works or not (many many failures have been recorded) unmaned aircraft will start running up tens thousands of hours of airtime and thousands of flights, all waiting for that inevitable systems crash, followed by a real world crash.
Safety first, safety last and safety everything inbetween.
Of course the apache licence and it's like can still be considered a trap. You take that copy of apache code and some of your code to it and sell that software. Someone copies that software without your permission and you claim copyright, they refute that claim, because they also already own a substantial portion of the underlying code, you are now required to open the code and prove which parts of the code are yours and that you are legally entitled and which parts of the code have to be ignored because they are already ownder by the accused copyright offender.
Now if all you did was say for example alter the look and brading of apache, well guess what, that is trademark infringement not copyright infringement. So called copyright offenders can now claim they already own a substantive portion of the code, use apache and you added only 1 percent of code of the complete project, then legally you can only claim 1 percent of the copyright value of the completed work, as all potential customers already own 99 percent of the code you used.
This also would stretch to BSD licences, derivative works is insufficient, as that code you add is the derivative work, not the code that is already owned by all possible customers. To alter that you would have to try to claim compiling the code, an automated function, as copyrightable.
GPL in reality is a lot clearer licence and BSD et al is legally problematic as everyone else own substantiation portions of software that you are attempting to claim as your own, everyone else also has access to the same code with the same licence.
The is so wrong. The logic of the law is that you are now legally liable for your memory. Can't remember something 5 years in prison, it is by far the most offensive legislation there is, hmm, what next death penalty for amnesiacs.
I have forgotten lots of passwords, I have had to rebuild data, redo secure OS installs, drop web accounts, have passwords reset and what some fucked up government and corrupt court decide that they want that information, my total by now 5 years at a time would be up around 250 years in jail. The law is bullshit, there is a profound difference between telling a lie and withholding the truth, conscious effort is required to tell the lie but withholding the truth simply requires a lapse of memory. How many people, failed to get every answer right in every test and exam they have taken, billions of people, it is the norm and in by far the majority of instances, they had been provided all the information required to get 100 percent on those tests and exams.
Now lets start holding politicians to the same standard, zero forgetfulness, zero lapses of memory, zero forgotten promises, 5 years jail for every offences, oh yeah, because it does affect national security.
The whole universe, was just created one second ago, everything in it's place. If you think you existed prior to that second, it is just a delusion planted in your mind when you where created (depending upon how fast you read, about 6 seconds ago). Just to test your faith, evolution was incorporated into the fossil and well as being demonstrated in DNA, just to be tricky and, to ensure future development, after all incorporating the adaptability of evolution to promote future survivability is the intelligent thing to do.
Har har, fooled you the universe will actually be created in 10 seconds time and this post is going to be part of that fabrication or is that delusion 5... 4... 3... 2... 1... 'BING' (oh and M$ still sucks).
All it will take is FOSS and the education market. This is googles target with chrome, especially in these harsh economic times. Primary schools and high schools all over the world are going to switch over to 'smartbooks', durable, cheap and running free software, the OLPC come to life. Hundreds of millions of software licences, OS, office suite, educational applications, backend server installations and that is tens of billions of dollars gone from the closed source proprietary software market.
So while google wont pick up all M$ revenue from that lost market share, if fact just a small percentage but, the rest still disappears of M$'s bottom line. Of course google isn't alone, Sun seems to be moving and of course the manufacturers all want a peace.
Ultimately what it boils done is not so much google but the manufacturers, free software means people have a lot more money to spend on hardware, in fact the majority of M$'s revenue.
Stop that, your confusing the issue, far right can't make up it's mind any more, socialist, liberals, communist, nazi(I know these four are contradictory but it doesn't seem to make any difference), intellectual elitist, antichrist , atheist (although you can't be both Antichrist and atheist because you have to believe to be an antichrist), unamerican (just curios but are Canadians by definition unAmerican or not), pacifist (why exactly is that an insult), anarchist, racist, lefties (what have they got against left handed people).
I had to go to one those those sites "MM" to find them all. I don't know but as an Australian, why are they so uptight about fried chicken and watermelon, has Kernal Sanders done something to upset them?
If you want to go that way, how about humanity and the lack of a self cleaning butt. Intelligent design, WTF, if humanity was so intelligent you reckoned by now they would have figured a way of genetically engineering a self cleaning backend.
Most poorly physically designed monkey on the planet. If some of them, mind you only minority, didn't have brains they would be of any use at all and likely be extinct by now from some random butt infection.
Yes of course you have a choice with corporations many examples can be listed, don't take their patented medicines get sicker and die, don't buy from farms owned by corporations starve and die, don't buy their water get thirsty and die, don't buy their energy freeze and die, see choice. The corporations manipulated and took control of government to gain control of all available resources for the profit of individuals at the expense of other individuals.
Government is not some alien entity, the people are the government and the government is a bad as the people allow it to become. We are a human society. The difference between government and private is for some inane reason we allow elements of our society to be handed over to the private control of a handful of individuals, not for the benefit of society but so those individuals can exploit the rest of society for their own benefit. Do you even know what a privateer is http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Privateer and privatising segments of our human society really demonstrates how far we have yet to go in becoming a more evolved society.
All the works of humanity are the collective works of humanity, we are humans not lizards, the basis of human society is not exploiting and preying on all the other humans.
When it comes to paying taxes, here is a lesson for the government, people who violently oppose taxes, risk body and limb to reduce their tax burden will pretty much do anything to avoid paying taxes obviously including and especially fudging the books. Racial profiling is bad but there is nothing wrong with behavioural profiling, so all the teabaggers and town hall crashers, how many of them do you think cheats on their taxes, 25 percent, 50 percent or maybe even 100 percent. Those three letter agencies should get busy identifying and auditing those tax recalcitrant individuals and, perhaps we will all gain a little peace and quite.
There is another difference between 10" and 14", 10" is well more crunchable and the more they produce the more crunchable it becomes ie. it is less painful to accidentally destroy one. It real world competitive terms, it means you can more effectively target the school market and that's not university but primary school and high school and that market requires that the computer be replaced upon an annual basis cost effectively not necessarily upon an individual basis but upon an overall basis. It will happen and the biggest driver, a cheap netbook/smartbook running FOSS software will be cheaper than the text books it replaces.
Even in the normal business environment having computers that companies can more, oddly enough cost effectively lose (they do manage to lose hundreds of thousands of them), will be a major saving.
Privacy invasions certainly are not what they used to be. Now trained psychologists, in fact people with doctrates, work on wasy to manipulate peoples choices on an individual basis not for the benefit of the people they are manipulating but for greater profits for corporations. It is hard to tell those psychologists that worked with tortures to make that torture more effective of those psychologists who try to manipulate societies to feed the greed of a minority regardless of the the harm, they know, not figuratively but literally know exactly what kind of damage they are doing to individuals and to society as a whole.
So the FTC and the medical profession as a whole should bore it right up 'em. Not only who they share that data with but also what they do with that data and the legal implications of using that data in a very perverted manner compared to the intent of training people in psychology. It is really pretty sick that they use what was intended to make people mentally healthier is instead used to manipulate them and make what amounts to mentally unhealthy, there really has to be some serious ramifications for that kind of abuse.
I though the internet was for free pron and computer gaming, you mean you actually use if for work, damn what a waste;).
Of course what is really good about the internet is you can do a whole bunch of things. Commerce, politics, education, social interaction etc. it is basically a digital bridge between you and everybody else that's connected and planet's worth of digitised data.
So yeah, who cares what cable networks wants to do or what free to air want to do, I have not watched either one of them this year at home, not once, not even a few seconds worth, your perception of life does alter when you are free from the endless manipulative drone of mass media adds. I get most everything from the net, apart from some DVD content bought cheap and legal and, that is basically just as background entertainment.
Bah, don't be silly, during the interview, you ask what ever questions will make you look good in the eyes of the employer. Try and gauge what your interviewer deems important and ask those questions whether you want the answers or not.
If you really want to know what is going on with the company ask other existing and ex employees outside of the job interview process and try to get the dirt on what is really going on. Don't come off smug or having an inflated opinion of yourself by asking the wrong questions, better to have a couple of job offers and make your choice after successful interviews.
You should know what the company is like and what it is about well before you turn up to the interview, so that when you talk to them, when you answer their questions and when they give you the opportunity to ask them questions, you adjust your communications to gain a positive outcome.
Of course one thing that computers are really good at is engineering. In fact the easiest areas to apply artificial intelligence are in engineering, especially molecular engineering. Give the computer the problem and let it iterate through possible solutions, whilst a person might make an intuitive leap or stumble upon a solution through serendipity, the computer is relentless, calculating solution after solution until through, evolutionary based engineering, it finds the optimal solution, whether it take 10,000 trial runs or 10,000,000 trial runs, it will inevitably find the optimal solution, and then it can automatically prepare the documentation for slower humans to produce the actual product.
The trickiest thing for artificial intelligence to replicate is effective interaction with a real world environment. Safest jobs are tradesmen, electrician, plumber, carpenter etc. The reality is a couple of very skilled engineers and a bunch of coders can replace tens of thousands of engineers, produce just one solution in software and it can be copied an unlimited number of times.
Well in this case not only is it wrong but likely immoral and evil. The corporation is essential laying all of it's social burdens, those it accrues from the social benefits it gains, upon everyone else in the state. It basically blackmails state after state, continually pursuing a corrupt agenda, it's unwillingness to pay it's fair share of taxes.
It does this by specifically creating boom and bust economies in states, financial protectionism of the organised crime variety. Do give a tax holiday and they will fire thousands of workers, disrupt social and economic functions across a community and a whole state, including the devaluing of peoples homes, sending their mortgages underwater.
It is really time for the states to wake up, boom and bust is of no advantage to the state at all, it just distorts property values, builds up towns only to turn them back into ghost towns as the inevitably relocate. It disrupts communities and turns employees into migrant workers as they shift from place to place forced to follow corporate tax cheats.
All states in all countries should sit back and take a more appropriate long term and establish tax treaties to prevent this extortion and blackmail of their states economies. So there is nothing wrong with a corporation moving but it should not be able to cheat on it's taxes and push those financial burdens on every other citizen in the state. Corporations that do this are basically and publicly saying, corporate profits and executive bonuses first, last and everything in between and fuck (there really is any polite way of putting it) your schools, hospitals, roads, bridges, police, community centres, public parks, fire brigades the whole encompassing fabric of your community that your taxes pay for and of course that the additional taxes you have to pay to make up for those, that what, legally cheat out of paying.
So be happy, instead of that money paying for the public services that the corporation benefits from, it pays for first class overseas holidays, mansions, servants, luxury gas guzzling cars, yachts and for the ultimate polluter private jets, nothing quite says suck on my shit, the pollution created, like a private jet.
TV, eep, TV, that's just so wrong. Do not buy a TV, by a large screen display and a dumbed down PC (still way smarter than an idiot box). Add a couple of dvd burners, a couple of very large hardisks to the PC and Mythbuntu and each time you play a DVD, that you have legally bought on special, daft to pay full price, especially when there are some many and you can pay quarter of the price on special basically paying for the convenience, a rip them to the hard disk when you play them for the first time, creating a media juke box.
Of course with a full Mythbuntu box, you also have a secure family file server, a mail server, you can stream from the web and, if you really want to (it is becoming rather pointless now days) add a digital tuner card or two too your PC.
Strangely enough not only do you end up with a way more powerful and flexible media centre, you save a lot of money in the process, some where between 50 percent and 80 percent. Too squeeze the most out of your investment you have to do a bit of fair bit of research, as I do not know of any places that sell optimumly configured, ready to go mythbuntu boxes.
Smoking is more than just nicotine, another big component of smoking is carbon monoxide. Carbon monoxide of course has a significant impact on respiration as it interferes with the ability of red blood cells and their ability to absorb and release oxygen and carbon dioxide, the red blood cells absorb the carbon monoxide and not longer absorb and release oxygen or carbon dioxide.
This obviously reduces the flow of oxygen to the brain, slowing down brain the functions of, schizophrenics and of course anyone else that smokes. Stop smoking and you get a real imbalance, as over time the body has produced more red cells to counter act the inefficiencies induced by the carbon monoxide, so you end up with a sustained surge of oxygen to the brain when you stop smoking, after the carbon monoxide slowly leaves the blood and before red blood cells supply rebalances with the revised demand, in affect wiring you up and making the nicotine withdrawals far more noticeable, information overload.
No the real difference is marketing. The BSA simply targets commercial customers and ignores retail customers. Hence all those retail customers, by far the majority of people don't even know they exist and even if they do know, they know that the BSA (at this stage) will have no impact on them.
I though the internet was for free pron and computer gaming, you mean you actually use if for work, damn what a waste ;).
