getting close to making me have faith in our judicial system again... almost.
And they're finally starting to look into the Gitmo Habeas Corpus thing. It's almost like the courts are remembering it's their job to respect the rule of law...
A company spokesman said it's not a big deal because they have no intent to censor criticism.
Oh, well okay then, why didn't they say so? Hell, we should give the government the right to censor too, as long as they _say_ they have no intent to do it...I mean, governments and big corporations never lie to the populace, right?
My guess is to allow you to use Office tools while not at your usual desktop machine.
The summary states that you can only edit online documents when using a computer that has Office installed...so, even if it's not your usual desktop machine, it still needs to have Office installed (assuming the summary is correct)
It's realtively standard practice in such a lawsuit to include every party and let the judge determine which ones are actually potentially liable or not.
And I'm guessing Creative Commons and Virgin Mobile have somewhat deeper pockets than the camp counselor who posted the image.
Eh, this is just one more reason why I went with a non-Apple mp3 player...it plays all of the music and podcasts I want it to, and I'm not locked into using iTunes. I can't listen to the DRM'd iTMS tracks, but who cares, it's not like I can't buy and rip CDs...

A microphone. VOIP with WIFI is kinda useless without a mic...
You could record your side of the conversation on your computer before calling somebody, put it on your iPod as an MP3, and then play it back for your friend via VOIP! Just leave a lot of pauses, they'll never know the difference...
While I agree that a FOSS alternative to Flash would be terrific, I'm not sure how you arrive at the conclusion that "Actionscript is a terrible language". It used to be a PITA back in versions 4 and 5 of Flash, that's for sure, but with the introduction of AS2 and AS3, it's an object-oriented language that's generally pretty similar to C# or Java.
CDBaby gives a *lot* more money to the artist. I get $0.637 for every $0.99 track sold on iTunes, which is far more than I'd make per track from a traditional record company. The problem, of course, is that there's significantly less marketing, etc., so the overall quantity of sales are less than they could be.
Yeah, it all depends on perspective, I suppose...given how poorly companies are doing at keeping SSN and other personal info safe, I can't imagine they'll do much to keep my documents safe.
I think it's pretty clear we're not talking about software licensing or hardware service contracts. I don't see why I would want to pay Microsoft a monthly or yearly fee for the privilege of using their word processor when I can just use an older version that doesn't charge me a recurring fee, or a free alternative like Open Office.
I don't think a client-server model is what's being talked about here. "Software as Service" generally means moving client-side applications like Word Processors to the server...Email obviously requires a server.
So, you NEVER outsource work that needs to be done to an outside vendor? You fix your own car, repair your air conditioner, etc?
I didn't say that I don't see the upside of service in general. I don't see the upside of Software as Service. I do generally fix my own car, and have never had to have my AC fixed, but that's besides the point. I still own my car and I own my AC. I don't want Car as Service or AC as Service. Similarly, I don't want Software as Service.
Sucks, but seriously, do a little research before you move, if your business depends on it.
I had this problem about 5 years ago, when I moved to a Chicago suburb. I had assumed that I'd be able to get broadband (a necessity for my work), so I didn't even bother to check. Turns out I was wrong, I couldn't get DSL or Cable at all for several years. I lucked out, though, in that there were a few different wireless broadband providers in the area. You basically put a dish on your roof that points at a tower a few miles away. Worked well enough, but the ISP sucked, so I left them for cable broadband when it became available.
I just had to laugh when I heard you did your "research" papers in Microsoft Word. Not even Microsoft Research does that.
Yeah, because only math and engineering students do research...do you honestly think the average medical student (for instance) is using LaTeX for their research papers?

Now I do my part: I live in Hong Kong and the only star I could see all these years is that red dot behind the moon, probably Mars.
You can see behind the moon from Hong Kong?

Can you please cite the judicial order or legislative ruling that establishes copyright infringement as equivalent to theft?
;-)
Pfft...who needs judicial orders or legislative rulings when you can have wild speculation?

modded down by the iPod fanboys in 3...2...1...

Or, if you're on Windows, just install Cygwin.
Don't forget about Memory Stick, the solution to a problem that nobody has...a lack of choices among removable flash storage media.
