  1. Take a little trip with me. on Earthquake In China · · Score: 5, Insightful
For all the cold hearted folks carping about population control and karmic justice think about this.

Imagine having your legs pinned under 18 tons of concrete. You are laying in the dark under the rubble of a multi-story apartment complex. Next to you is the body of one of your children, below you is your other child, who is suffering yet refuses to die. As the rest of the world is in a warm bed or on a comfortable couch or sitting here being crass, drinking coffee and taking this in as some sort of sick Romanesque spectator sport.

Yet here you are under the rubble watching your last child suffer away and you are wishing and hoping that if you die maybe a higher power will be placated and spare your child. The pain isn't so bad anymore, except for the cries coming from under you in the rubble. The cries of people who had dreams that will likely never be realized. The cries of pain and anguish. You hope for some relief before the dark comes, but only rain water dripping down on you. The darkness comes the cries continue. The pain continues. You watch your child draw his last breath.

Those of you without sympathy for the suffering are the ones that need to be lined up and shot on sight.

Just 2 cents from a red blooded American!

  5. Sleep deprivation affects our performance. on One in Ten Americans Are Chronically Sleep Deprived · · Score: 1
Whew. What a timely article. This past weekend was extremely hard on me and I have found out that serious sleep deprivation affects my ability to play, think, and create. This past Thursday night we retired to bed at 11:50 a.m, and had to wake up at 4:00 a.m.. Took my wife to the airport, went to my business and then got home around 1:30 or 2:00. On a normal day I would probably get a nap in, but in this case my best friends from our university days were coming down for a weekend of music making. So the rest of the day on Friday was spent getting the house ready, stocking up on beer, setting the board up, etc..

They arrived at around 7:30 from Nashville, and Johnson City and we started jamming, and it was awesome. The Grateful Dead in their prime had nothing on us Friday night. (Seriously, well maybe a little bit, but not much).. Just free form music and it was sublime! At this point my mind still had energy reserves.. We went out into space for 4 or 5 hours. I went to bed at 1:20 a.m, and then had to get up at 4:00 am.. The next day (Saturday) was terrible! I cut my finger that morning from not having a clear head, and was a zombie. Just plain physically exhausted and at a bluegrass show we went to I could hardly even play. It was like my brain was in neutral (some would say it always is anyway), my finger hurt more than it should have also. But yep, there was something like a 1000% decrease in my performance from Friday to Saturday, and I feel it was a lack of sleep. After the bluegrass show we switched gears and went to another studio to play with a drummer and an energy drink helped and it was kinda fun, but after that, at around 11:30 Saturday night I crashed hard.. So I just went to bed, but the sleep wasn't productive.

Now it is Monday, and I still feel like a zombie, but somewhat more alert. I think that sleep is much more important than we all give it credit for. Two or three days/nights on 2 or 3 hours of sleep each night are painful to say the least. It was worth it, but a wall outlet or charging unit is needed for my body and mind.

I would consider a clone of me as well. :)

Actually, Amtrak ridership has Increased over the last 6 years.

I hope it continues to increase. There is currently a bill that will give Amtrak a much needed funding increase. Before all the trolls start saying that rail is wasteful consider carefully that any road in the U.S is subsidized heavily. Amtrak has done an amazing turnaround over the last 8 years despite the airline and road construction lobbyists trying to kill it. If Amtrak had even a small amount of the funding that airlines and interstates have recieved during this period we could all have an economical and comfortable travel alternative. I hope they build one or more of the Maglevs simply because I live in Chattanooga (Choo-Choo). We don't even have passenger rail service and haven't since 1970. As anyone who has been to Europe, or ridden on a well managed Amtrak line can attest to, rail is comfortable and fun. For me riding the rails is not as much just getting there, but enjoying the ride.

It is a sad state when a supposed first world country like the U.S tries to kill travel alternative like rail. When all the planes were grounded after 9/11 the trains kept rolling. When gas goes to 4.00/gallon they will be rolling. That is reason enough to support passenger rail. Oh, if anyone with Amtrak happens to read Slashdot, why the hell does a city like Chattanooga, Tn which was once one the largest rail capitals in the world, not even have a passenger service? That is a disgrace. We want rail service and we want it badly. Norfolk Southern and CSX also lobby against passenger travel because they want the mainlines all to themselves for frieght. Be it maglev or diesel electric passenger service Chattanooga should have an alternative to driving or flying. We didn't get the song Chattanooga Choo Choo for just any old reason.

Build it, and they will come. With flying becoming even more of a hassle, and fuel prices on an ever higher trajectory passenger traffic rail will continue to increase. On a train you can go to the dining car and have room to stretch out, have wifi and a nice cocktail. Chattanooga not having passenger service is the greatest single disgrace our city has at this time. It is part of our heritage. It truly is heartbreaking, so Amtrak, build it or at least open one line to Atlanta. The future is bright for rail folks. One way or the other the economics are starting to make sense again.

Slash is not very hard to install or mess with once you do it a couple of times. You might learn a lot by just not giving up. I did. The biggest issue is getting all of the development packages together and getting DBD::mysql to play nice with libmysqlclient. At least in my opinion. Currently I have 4 instances of slash witht he latest CVS running on this one home box. Thats just four...

Why? I don't know. I like it. I changed the installer script build it into users home directories and then it links it to apache but with one caveat. If you do more than one include directly on httpd.conf it screws up the rendering for some strange reason. So httpd.conf has an Include /usr/local/slash/httpd/slash.conf, and then in that instance inside /usr/local/slash/httpd/slash.conf I link to another one, and so on down the line for all the users.

For my home system it works pretty well. As far as on Redhat 9 or something, that shouldn't be too bad. Although I did try to install it on Fedora and never succeeded, although that was a long time ago. Now that I have seen what it takes I could probably get it running on a toaster. CPAN could take a while on that though.

Windows Vista should be renamed Windows Chernobyl. That probably is not snappy enough for the mass marketing folks. Since Windows Me! and Vista both share a common and lauded heritage how about renaming it "Windows Squint!"? Have you looked at the price of electricity in Tennessee? I am sorry but Tennessee has some of the cheapest electricity rates in the country. Solar just can't compete with rates that range from 6 to 7.5 cents/kwh!

A grid tied system for my house would cost roughly 40,000 to 50,000 dollars, and unlike Californina the state really doesn't care about fostering solar. I agree that is sad and all but the bottom line is solar is no panacea. Until the rates get so high that solar can compete many folks will stay with TVA supplied power and possibly choose the green switch program to feel good.

  21. Browns Ferry Unit 1 on Heat Wave Shuts Down Alabama Reactor · · Score: 2, Interesting

I have supported the restarting of Browns Ferry Unit 1 for a long time. Because despite the issues nuclear power is an immediatly available and fairly clean power source. Browns Ferry Unit 1 has had a bumpy road to travel since it was commissioned, and then shut down, and then restarted. Since its restart it has contributed clean energy at a time when the Tennessee Valley has been hammered by record high temperatures.record rainfall deficits that have severely curtailed hydroelectric production and made for conditions calling for record power demand levels.

One occurance that also recently occured at Browns Ferry was the automatic shutdown of the reactor due to a coolant leak. TVA reported to the NRC that an unknown amount of reactor cooling water had indeed leaked and they spent last weekend repairing it. After restart the high water temps forced this shutdown. In fact this is nothing new though. We had the Sequoyah reactor using its cooling towers last year due to elevated water temps.

But yeah its been hot for sure. Also of interest is it looks like we are going to get the newest reactor in the US and that it be at Watts Bar. Unit 1 has been online there since 1996, and produces enough juice for 250,000 homes. Unit 2 at Watts Bar was roughly 80% complete when construction stopped. TVA is currently and exploring finishing the construction of Unit 2 giving us yet another clean power source. In September 2000 Watts Bar Unit 1 set a record for continuous operation of TVA reactors of similar design.
