Yeah it is. We lost a house a number of years ago to a fire. The firefighters almost had the house under control, and the separate garage was also involved. They were focusing on the house first, and then learned that we had acetylene in there.... Needless to say they went from focusing on the house so much to the garage. In the end the garage made it, and the house didn't.

Well done hand writing is really quite beautiful, but it may be that since no one tends to write hand written letters much, or converse via letters, that the ability to write beautifully has lost some of its stature? It used to be that folks were judged by the recipient of a letter or note on how well the letters were formed. My parents and teachers forced me to write in cursive quite a lot, and already at 6 my son can write pretty well, but the cursive will wait for him for a few more years. Maybe if society put a premium back on it things would change. I honestly so rarely even handwrite anything anymore, that when I pick a pen up, my hands are shaky, and the letters are forced.. God.. I need to do some homework!

Sometimes the fine print has things in there that you need to watch for. I use Facebook. I like Facebook. It lets me keep up with friends who don't happen to be geeks and use it as their primary communication tool. What I don't like is not having an option on my images I upload to choose a Creative Commons license. I wish I could do that, although the TOS pretty much says once you upload to FaceBook they own it. And that in itself is pretty damn restrictive and maybe not really legal.

So please Facebook, just put all the creative commons license choices on there, and the problem is solved

Sounds like a pretty good defence mechanism. As far as the tree and evolution, if more trees are not being eaten that have the spiny defence trait, then that means the trait is probably going to be amplified. It doesn't matter that there are not any Moa's left, and 500 years is a drop in the evolutionary bucket.

Then one day by random chance a little tree will sprout that has smaller barbs, and if it survives might start a trend towards less pokey trees.

Something tells me none of us will be around by then unfortunately. I'd also wager the barbs help keep things like people and imported herbivores at bay as well, and until we go extinct maybe the trees will continue to poke when pecked, even if the poke is intended for extinct peckers.

Aerisyn has been here in my hometown for a number of years. They are expanding like crazy right now, and occupy space formally held by Combustion Engineering (Who went way to far into nuclear in the '70's and went broke). The facility languished as manufacturing jobs in the fair burg of Chattanooga went away, but Combustion had been around for many years, and during WW2 built ship boilers for the war effort. So, being located on the Tennessee River, Combustion had their own port, which is now being refurbished and Aerisyn and Alstom ( I think are going to share the port to ship stuff).

So it doesn't have to really go on the highway unless the tower factories are located in a place that doesn't have access to shipping. Of course rivers and waterways only go so far and sooner or later the towers have to hit the road.

It looks like the design team just quit, and it doesn't look good at all. The third are reports of super bad visibility, and a cheap interior.

That is why I love my Challengers more and more. They have the great lines of inspired design, and while there is always something faster out there, you can't outrun ugly. Here is a nice image comparison of a Challenger and a Camaro: Challenger and Camaro via autoblog. Yet to each their own. At least we live in a day and age where all three historic cars are available at the same time: The Dodge Challenger, Camaro, and Mustang. If you want one you better get one quick though. As the new CAFE standards are implemented these cars will likely go away by 2012. It is 1972 all over again. My SRT8 Challenger gets fair mileage. My R/T Challenger got 26mpg on the highway. I think the Camaro's are comparable. And thank you editors for posting a car story! I love cars. :)

  14. Cutting back only gets ya so far.. :) on 'Power Capping' the Datacenter · · Score: 1
Scaling down the use or throttling the usage during off peak times could be a good thing, but how much energy would it really save in the long run? It has been noted that data centers energy usage could double by 2011. Would steps like this really make a dent in that trend? I would grant that it might lower the curve, however it won't stop the trend of growing datacenter energy usage. I don't subscribe to the "permanent energy crisis" argument. There *is* a "permanent political crisis", meaning that things like nuclear, wind, solar, biomass, oil and coal are all wrapped up in a NIMBY attitude that has gotten us to this point. I understand trying to cut usage, however electricity usage is going to increase for near term and quite possibly into the long term. What we need is more generation from a wide mix of sources to power our datacenters, homes, businesses, and yes... our lives.

The funny thing is this where cost vs. efficiency start working and sooner or later when the maths are right for companies and individuals bottom line higher efficiency will begin to be adopted. But it has to make sense for the bottom line, or it won't fly.

Before I get modded as a troll, or flamer, let me state unequivbacly that I support electric cars. However there are some issues that never seem to get discussed, like?

    A) what infrastructure will be involved in charging a fleet of electric cars?

    B) The staggering cost associated with the batteries?

C)The energy needed to produce said batteries. Where does that come from?

    D) Supporters say that it lessens the cost to drive, but just as surely as electric cars come to market the energy or distance travelled in them will be taxed.

    E) Carrying around combustible fuel may not be smart, but what about the jaws of life on a high voltage vehicle? Sounds nasty and dangerous, or even worse a two car accident involving an electric car and a gas burner. Sounds like a bonfire to me.

Maybe a better route to travel is utilizing hybrids that burn fuels like bio-butanol + cellulosic ethanol blends, or even diesels, or other synthetic or algal biofuels. I hope their research comes to fruition, however the green washing of everything is getting old. On one hand they want us to turn the thermostat up in the summer, down in the winter. Turn appliances off, and not build any nuclear plants, while on the other hand the tell us that electric cars are the answer yet to charge a fleet say of 100 million electric cars would be an immense load on the system.

Don't get me wrong, maybe one day the math will work out, and it is a good thing researchers all over the place are bringing a host of alternatives to near-term market place. I just hope we never put all of our eggs in one basket again.
