In perionds with no disk activity it will "optimise" the data by moving the most accesed blocks in Raid1/0. This way you have a "fast" raid5 storage and a "space wise" raid 1/0 :)

  18. one BIG xinerama question on Review of the Matrox G450 For Linux · · Score: 1

Is it possible to have different resolutions on the displays ? The XFREE docs are only stating that the screens must be in the same bit depth but nothing about the resolution.

I have an 17" monitor and i'll put another 14" one beside him (with a monitor arm - no table space for 2 17" monitors :( ) if i could run 800x600 on the 14" one and 1280x1024 on the 17" one to have an L shaped kinda display (i seen w98 doing that and i have seen a picture of an old mac doing that) it would be perfect. Without Xinerama (screen :0.0 and :0.1) it works (3.3.x) but could Xinerama cope with that ? (what kind of strage output will xwd create from a L shaped root window ? )

NOOOOO ! God forbid ! If you recompile a binary for performance'n'stuff (that's why .srpm and .src.deb were made for) - you're dead, having as many chances for the binary to run as with dd if=/dev/random of=binary. Look at the kernel: yes, a patch is smaller than a kernel - but all the patches required to transform an 2.2.5 (shipped with an imaginary distro) to 2.2.17 or the patches to get from 2.2 to 2.4 are WAY WAY WAY bigger put together than the kernel itself. And no, having a zilion patches for upgrading ANY verion to ANY version is not a good ideea for the ftp servers's owners.

The problem with old computers is that they USE ELECTRICITY, and lots of. I wanted to grab hold of an old VAX server, but after checking its power consumption levels i deciced that with a year's electricity cost i could buy a significantly faster pentium or k5 which also would make less noise.

And what to do with old 8/16bit machines which cannot run linux to save their asses ? Play a little with them and you will find them tooo slow for your liking (ever tried to use an 286 after using some almost-gigahertz machine ? the letters appear on the screen with a smaaal delay after you press the keys. When all i had was an 286 - i didn't noticed that, but now i do and after 10 minutes it becomes annoying)

I am the proud owner of an 1987-or-something hercules monitor and video card, an 1985 vt100 terminal and lots of other old hardware which I use (cases, keyboards, floppy drives, controllers, arcnet network cards ...) and will use until the last miligram of magic smoke in them is out. But i thrown away the Z80, XT and 286 processor based boards as there was nothing i could do with them. (hint: most memory chips (256K*4) on 286 boards fit perfectly on old svga cards)

Recycle/reuse as much as you can. Upgrade/repair as much as it's possible. Recycle what you can't.

If the interface will be trough an PC[mcia] or flash card and not using the VGA out connector, this means that the pcmcia/flash card will be a video card so here come the problems:
    - PC/FLASH bus is slow and 16bit - so no high fps rates. Extremelly low ones maybe. I don't think that the PC/Flash buses were ever designed for that.
    - Driver problems (Second video card -ok- but how you disable the first one TO HAVE 25% POWER SAVE) (Hot pluggable video cards ? if i connect two sets of glasses (trough 2 pc cards) what do i get ? )
    - See if they can fit 4 3D processors and 128mb of texture ram on a PC card to make a competing video card. (and where will they fit the coolers ? :-)

Let's just wait until the industry creates an unified digital video-out connector/standard. (FireWire ?)
