    Yep, the guy is right.

    2.4 HAS some problems. Alltrough it runs like a dream on my dual (you can feel the difference from 2.2), it sometimes "forgets" about the ne2k-pci card being there. Badly. You need to reboot. If you had some NFS mounts, you-re screwed.

    But I won't go back to 2.2. :)

    Do NOT listen to Upbeat Depression - Ultra-Violence while in midgame - especially do NOT listen to the beginning or the ending of that tune. You will be forced to enter console mode for a while and you will lose. In fact delete that mp3 file right now !

    Whoewer selected a tune with samples of "running water" in it to be included in a networked- multiplayer- 12_hours_straight_gameplay- no_sleep- no_eat- and_especially_NO_TOILET_break game is a very sick person or a very good prankster.

    Yep, definitelly not a romanian name but a russian one. But what you can expect from M$N an M$-nbc. Remember: the M$-Earth spins the other way around and the Ural mountains (which divide europe and asia) are in romania (like 2000km away).

    Till "mid 2001" Mozilla and StarOffice will kick the crap out of m$ and nobody will care about IE and Oriffice. Till "mid 2001" KOffice, Konqueror, Gnome-office, Gnumeric, Abiword, [k|g]* will be as feature-full as their m$ conterparts and less buggy and more stable. Who will need m$ products in the next mellenium ?

    PS: and as we know m$, "mid 2001" == "around 2002"

    Yes, you need it. 64Mb or 32Mb will be enough.
    Even 4Mb will do. But you should have swap. I noticed that on systems with no swap, when a fork/malloc bomb occures (Soffice with some strange doc file) the system won't come back. With a little swap (1/3 of mem) some apps (the ones that will unsuccesfully try to malloc) will die (usually Netscape&X) and the system is back online.

    Working setup for mind-controlled device:

    step 1:

    Take and old PC (286-486sx) running DOS and some old shareware board game. Put it in demo mode (computer vs. computer). Wish/think that a side shall win. Repeat 50 times.

    With an 486sx20 and HEXXAGON I succeded to make the desired side win about 90% of the time.

    step 2:

    make an X app that displays 4 big dots disposed in a cross. The app shall use two random number generators (one for the X one for the y axis), and put a blot randomly on the dots. Wish/think the blot to stay more in some of the dots. Count how many times the dots were hit.

    (my Xlib programming skills suck) - will be done

    step 3 - Use the difference of the values to move the mouse (trough Xtest ext.). Wish your mouse go left :)

    No, *nix never crashes :) But the ideea of backups is good when:
    - lots of users play with rm, wildcards and their "important" data
    - you have a shitload of disks and the mtbf/nr_of_disks ratio is very low.
    - you||your bo$$ are paranoid
    - you have VERY important data which must survive an axe-trough-cpu error.

    ps: mtbf==mean time between failures

    Ok, time for the big questions which generate a lot of +3 Informative replyes in the thread.

    What firewire sollutions exists for x86 PC's and are there Linux, *BSD, BeOS drivers for them ?

    How much more they cost comparing to Ethernet and USB ?

    Can you home-build cables for them you have to buy the wires too ?

    Does ALL of the devices (FireWire, IEEE 1394 "compatible", iLink, FooWire ...) fit togheter or there are some liiitle protocol incompatibilities/extensions between them ?
