The Xbox was designed from the start to play games and DVDs, not take market share away from their PC demographic. Much like Nintendo missed the boat with Gameboy SP because it didn't have phone/dvd/mp3/wireless.
Mod parent offtopic.
Justification. You're paying for the CD, everything that went into its creation, and a license to its content. Why should game manufacturers be held to some kind of unrealistic standard because you can't take care of the shit you buy?
So Gabe Newell of Valve is excited about the technology, but the average Slashdot user isn't and thus it's not a big deal? This is the kind of developer support that the Unreal Engine is known for. Why not push that support to the platform itself?
Yeah, well, FIPS 140-2 level 1 and NIAP CCITSE is nothing to sneeze at. Sensitive but not classified information. Standards-based encryption (of course), but no physical security measures like smartcards.
I can't be the only one who questions motives when the $1M prize is being sought after by a team with more than $2M already invested. What is the eventual payoff?
When an employee's home machine was infected with one of the recent viruses, Time Warner (roadrunner) eventually shut down his service - to the tune of 'blinking connect light'. Made it terribly difficult to download new virus definitions. At least they're still willing to turn it back on if you tell them why.
This recent writeup is centered around AOL ignoring a DMCA violation after it was brought to their attention. That's all. (They would be forced to remove it per copyright law - the DMCA specifies that a valid e-mail address must exist for complaints, etc.).
Do you know what.net is? Why are you afraid of it? It's part of WindowsUpdate, perhaps you'd feel more comfortable getting the framework from that site. Think of it as the newer VB runtimes.
Studies really have shown that the learning curve for Linux is not much different than the learning curve for Windows, and the Windows users tend to plateau at a lower level because the limited options keep them there.
A friend of yours at NORAD talked about systems infrastructure?
I was also being sarcastic, I wasn't implying that Farmer's Insurance would let you put GTA3 on your policy.
So call your insurance agent. You don't call Sears to pony up for new siding when your house burns down.

No, they'll just stay home and watch TV, the other social ill that you hate.
As an end-user, I have to say that I was more than a little put off by the 6 HOUR installation time that the review advertised.

One of the reasons I _don't_ like the open source market. Make a comment about one of the developer's favorite movies, and a new fork is started.
Why does it seem that whenever it comes to patents, everyone is either passing the buck, or chasing their own tail.
Because they don't read Slashdot.

This is the same kind of post-manufacture testing that decides what color transistors and capacitors are painted before you solder them on your PCB.

What a horribly formatted post, and it got up to 5?
On second read, you are correct. I stand corrected.
You missed the entire point of the article. Viacom is the one instigating. Why is this "Interesting" when it's entirely wrong?
You know, that vintage Penny-Arcade comic demonstrates why the other artists don't have nearly the traffic of PA. They haven't evolved as artists.

The only thing I don't like about this device is that it must be implanted in your right hand or forehead.
That mindless trance would only capture those people who subscribe to Star Trek mailing lists.
Better yet.
Could you post a link to this study?
Hrm....time to read the Diamond Age again.
How many times do I have to say it? If everybody's grandma used Linux, viruses would be just as widespread. Look at the dates on these vulnerabilities.
