    Nowhere in the question does he mention the word open or standard.
    In fact, his complaint seems primarily to be cost:

    force the few remaining holdouts, like me, to shell out for a copy of Word

    I pointed him to a freely available MS program to read word files.
    The MS equivalent to Adobe Reader if you will.

    Kind of eliminates the need for his/her question really, since the "open standard"
    issue is some slashdot borg's personal soapbox and does not relate to the question at all.

    If he/she is on a unix machine, OO will do the trick, or Anti-Word, or whatever.

    In fact, this ask Slashdot is clearly a -1 TROLL

    I dont like the "Evil empire" any more than you do, but get over it.
    It is as ubiquitous as PDF. Why are you not raving about PDF ??

    You can get a free DOC viewer here or use OO.

    Personally I use OO and it rocks.
    If I resend a document I always convert it to rtf, txt, pdf, or another format to kind of send a hint.

    or my winxp laptop that thinks everytime I unplug my usb wireless adapter and plug it back in, its a different device. Im up to local area connection #76 ;) linux is not alone in this regard by a long shot.

    same thing with a handspring treo. switch usb ports and it has to go through the install routine all over again. ugggh. at least jpilot "just worked", unfortunately my cheap ass laptop simply will not work properly with any flavor of X video drivers.

    I agree with your points. He can pay up or shut up if he wants the isos. You point is well taken. However, the phrase "information wants to be free" is actually pretty accurate. Kinda like water seeks the lowest point. Water doesnt seek anything. Its just an....nevermind.

    I use a pentium 233 for a firewall/router and it handles everything I can dish at it.

    I agree with you, except that the GPL is an open style license. You can do whatever you want with GPL software, even sell it. Fairplay is a closed style of license and you cannot do whatever you want with it. You are totally right that its hypocritical. Hard one to work out because I agree with both sides.

    I wouldn't watch the video of the soldier getting beheaded becouse that is a man of honnor being attacked.

    You don't know jack sh$t about the soldier, what his morals and ethics were, what kind of person he is, or anything else.

    Being a soldier does not automatically make someone honorable (cough vietnam child rapes cough).

    You dont know jack about this guy on the video either.

    I've had winamp running for 3 days, streaming from an mp3 server on and off for hours.
    The memory footprint is 8,464KB right now. I installed Winamp lite so maybe that helped.

    that the slimserver is cross platform, and you don't need a squeezebox to play the streams.
    WinAmp/GQAmp/XMMS/??? work great.

    I dont own a squeezbox YET, but the slimp3 server is available to any
    friends/family that come over with a laptop and want to listen (wirelessly).

    I should have qualified my statement with my opinion on the MS case specifically, which is :
    they can bundle any software they see fit, its their product.

    its the claim that total reliance on the system to police itself that I was arguing against.

    XP has a built in firewall you could have enabled BEFORE you connected the ethernet cable

    more than enough protection during your race to download patches.
