"If you are a sysadmin, in an organization that runs Windows on the desktop, have you stumbled on many unofficial Linux installations?"
I'm not the sysadmin (not many schools would have a 15 year old take that possition) but I do work with the sysadmin for my highschool, they tech support staff, and with all the tech geeks and I can tell you that more than 1% of the 460+ desktops in the school have linux on them as a secondary OS (or use bootable linux eg. knoppix, dynebolic) and a handfull of them have only linux but they are certainly not recorded in any statistics. These computers get reformatted during the summer but by the end of the year linux well have worked its way back onto them.
Also many of my friends (yes I have a few, is it so hard to believe) have installed linux on their computers but don't report it and we all use the same disks so there is no way of recording installs from downloads.
Wow, thanks so much, this really clears things up for me as I fall very well under the hunter catagory. I'm printing this out right now to remind me of what I've just discovered. You comment about the educational system is correct and unfortunately if hunters can't keep up in this system they are viewed as lesser people, do you have any ideas on countering this effect?
you're right, i find 1am-5am to be very productive hours for me, unfortunately the rest of my life can't revolve around that, school starts at 7am and diner ends at 8-9pm, and you gotta get your sleep.
hmm yes, I've yet to get into the poetry area because of/. affect, maybe he should have thought about what he really wanted when he said he wanted lots of people to participate. Is a mirror going to be put up or is this just a dead fish until the crowds leave and then it dies away because of the lack of people?
I'm not the author (duh) but I had the same problem with my Compaq and when I called MS and Compaq they refused to do anything other than say "Dual booting isn't supported here", "Call [the other guy]", and "sorry but there is nothing that you can do"
To some people, like me, the idea of having to BUY more software to use what you've already BOUGHT just doesn't work, I'm not willing to drop $10 on software that serves only to allow me to use my software in a different way than the manufacturer 'expected' or whatever they want to call it.
OK, This looks good, I found the ISOs at the Phat Linux Source Forge page and more information at their homepage. I'll make one more post here, to let anyone who's interested know how it works for me, after the download is done.
Great idea, I'm looking up Phat Linux now, but I've never seen a linux distro that can write to ntfs, hopefully your write and I'm just behind on the new technology.
great solution but for some of the laptops the drivers are also locked up in the 'backup' or 'install' CDs and they require that you install their way or no way.
Same here, got a Compaq Presario 2100 that uses a similar backup ustility for all the software thus preventing full operation of a dualboot laptop. The OS install cd is thankfully available separately but all the software that you pay for is part of a package deal that requires you use NTFS on the entire HD. Somehow the companies get away with this, I certainly don't like it.
It seems to me like the rule with the FBI is that $5000 of monetary damages must be done before they even start to give a sh10t. A nice laptop/desktop is well under that amount as are many things that a h4x0r might want. Seems to me like the FBI is just asking for a bunch of fraudulent $4999 computer equipment purchases or whatever. Or maybe someone is just sitting around right now working on a system to hit up every company they can find and do just under $5k of damages so that no one can do a thing about it.
I know there's probably something that makes this not work but it's still seems stupid that the FBI sets such an obvious line for criminals to fall just short of and it's fairly high, I mean I know plenty of people who would consider the risk well worth 5K if they had the skills to pull something like this off and some of them are close to being that talented.
15 years old now and I started programming at 13. My suggestion is Visual Basic for starting out (did you know that in VB you can make a database access application without writing ANY code?). I think that if a kid, or anyone for that matter, wants to learn to program then they can buy some software to do it (compilers and tutorials if they want). The rest of the world who lets us do the programming doesn't want the cost of a compiler wrapped into their OS. Also, as microsoft office is a popular software package it might work to start out using VBA. OK, that's it, just had to let you know where the kids stand on this one.
I find it best to try to solve a problem myself, if I can't then I find someone elseâ(TM)s solution. Then I take their solution, study it, test it, and rebuild the whole thing. Seems stupid but it pays off in experience. If I solve a problem once I KNOW how to do it again. For me understanding what I'm doing is very important, it also makes debugging a whole lot easier and in the future I can reuse my own code and understand it immediately.
I have CRT monitors with my desktops and LCD with my laptop and spend every hour I can coding so eye strain is a big issue for me. Your suggestions about low brightness and lots of black are really effective (works within 15 seconds to reduce strain). Thanks for the advice.
I'm not into gaming enough (or maybe my pockets just aren't big enough to care) but is there a group out there that tests 3D cards on current games for which people might buy them. If so then ignore this whole 3DMark and look at their results. If not then what we have here is a great business opportunity for someone who can put up with testing the newest games on the newest 3D cards for a living. Wonder where to find someone like that?:)

Thanks, I'm trying TopologiLinux now.

would be nice if, like servers, desktops and notebooks had the options of coming with no OS so that we didn't have to pay so much extra for an M$ OS.

Unreal?! With that power why not bring brute force back in. All they need is a killer internet connection and a few disturbed computer geeks
No, the posting is the most important part. I may have to steal your signature because it is also fitting for me.
great signature

"To quote Robin Williams, she's going to become someone's b*tch." That was a great show, and then there was Bush talking about the stock market.
