My biggest objection to Mac has been the cost and inflexibility of their hardware. Give an HCL and I'd happily give it a try. McSoftware is kind of expensive but I'll give them that.

Came close to getting one of the older diesel Hummers and turning it into a rolling grease car billboard. But collecting and filtering waste vegetable oil for something that big was going to be a lot of work. One of these little cuties would be perfect.

Still a grease car Hummer would've been cool. I was going to have TELL THE SAUDIS TO CRAM IT painted on the side. Not sure painting that on a Smart car would have quite the same impact.

Wow, where are my hip waders? A friend of mine is VP of artist development at a record label. He seemed to feel that if they could sell CD's for five dollars each without producing the CD media, in his words, "We'd be rolling in money."

Using 12 tracks as an average for most CD's at a dollar a track makes it already hugely profitable for record companies and the first thing they want to do is try to squeeze you for even more. Okay, figure most people don't download whole CD's, they buy single tracks. They're still making a ton of money.

Amazing that it never seems to be enough for them. Then to come out and lie about their profit margin so brazenly just astounds me.

A smattering of OS X and a few Windows kiosk type workstations, not connected to the internet, for Windows only applications. Just amazes me that there are still people supporting Bush and these right wing liars. Not all Republicans are dishonest, but it seems like the party is infected and controlled by a militant vein of people with no moral character. This isn't the Republican party I grew up supporting. Unfortunately it has been established you can waive a lot of your rights in an employment contract, but at least you get to read that before deciding to take the job. In some cases you may even be able to negotiate changes. I've done that. But a EULA there's no place to note objections and no way to get a refund if you don't agree. That's not a contract, that's a hostage. Either agree to these terms or else you're out the money and you don't get to use the software.

I don't care about the legalities and the law, that ruling doesn't pass the common sense test. I agree EFF should appeal. Hostage taking in America, whether it's done with guns or EULA's should be illegal.

But I don't use Windows full time or even most of the time, it's just here and there. I don't think it's fair I would have to pay for a full copy of XPee just for a couple oddball apps and the occasional game.

If Windows didn't connect to my network that's okay as long as I could output to some kind of storage media or shared drive. Printing would be nice but similarly not necessary. And not connecting to the Internet would be a bonus.

I could live with the three app limitation as long as it didn't count background applications.

I think a killer combination would be a factory installed Linux distro with a dual boot option to XP Lite. Users get an OS that works and is safer to use on the internet and can still play their Windows only games and utilize the handfull of Windows only apps worth using. That way MSFT would still get a bite of the factory installed OS even where they were losing to Linux, which is just about everywhere these days.

One of these days we're going to need to face up to the fact that the only thing "United" about the US is the name.

Perhaps it's time to consider an amicable dissolution. Split the country right down the Mississippi River and give everyone ten years to pick a side and move. Or let people vote on what side they want to live and make the division based on a percentage of the population. Authorize some kind of land swap deal so families on one side or the other can trade for property of near equal value. Provide tax credits and subsidies for moving.

If you choose to travel to or stay on...whichever side...you agree to live by the laws and standards on that side of the country.

The right wing side would get all the religious freaks and could ban drugs, porn, abortion, make being gay a crime, reinstate the draft and set up whatever kind of religious symbols they want on government buildings and really enjoy getting the Ashcroft/Cheney/Renquist/Scalia treatment. Paradoxically the same type society our country's founders moved over here to get away from.

The progressive side of the country could live life their own way.

Coupled with that is the new focus on controlling interaction with the media and the neocon culture of retaliation. If the White House doesn't like what you write, you might find your access restricted, or your CIA agent wife named in the right wing media (hey, there's a switch). Expect payback. And if that level of pressure is applied to media companies and the same retalitory practices on the macro level, the overall chilling effect could be huge. Start peppering Bush with tough questions and you might not only be excluded from inside acess but might be out of a job or reporting on the rug weavers of western Pakistan.

And before some neocon drone steps up and tries to justify their behavior by saying the Democrats did the same thing when they were in power, the previous administrations were not nearly as draconian about trying to control access and what the media reported as this bunch. Stop justifying the horrendous tactics and amoral behavior of this administration by pointing back to the excesses of other political entities.
