I think that's what confusing about them. They're so certain about everything it's natural to assume there's a plan. Even when things go horribly wrong, they'll absolutely refuse to accept reality. If the news isn't good, change the news. Failing that attack the messenger. Never seen anything like it in my lifetime. I'm a little young to remember McCarthyism.

People I know supporting them, until just recently, were every bit as determined to hang on to their almost delusional views. Although now the justifications have gotten so ridiculous defense is largely half-hearted. I've seen several Bush bumper stickers in various stages of being scrapped off.

I don't doubt Vista will turn out to be a pretty good OS. I believe MSFT will sort out the driver issues and some of the early troubles. My question is not if it will be better, my question is whether it's so much better that it justifies the price difference?

My perception is the answer for a lot of people would be, right now at least, no.

Agh! Easy for you to say. I'm not sure what experience leads you to so callously dismiss a group of people who are usually understaffed to start with, dealing with seemingly endless stupid user tricks and have to accommodate the buzzword-of-day in IT. I heard a management person say, and this a quote, "I think we should do that SOA thing, don't you?"

So, no, based on what I've seen working with companies across the size spectrum, unless you're willing to pony up for the staff resources, the poor people on the front lines have to cut corners where they can. And it would not seem unreasonable to me that MSFT should be able to get the patches right the first time.

Otherwise, what are we getting for our money? MSFT is one of the richest companies on the planet...rich from our $$$. Why don't they dip into those billions and provide those poor people in IT a little relief. Perhaps then they'd have enough time to go out at a decent hour and actually have a chance at reproducing.

Find another vendor then. No one forces Microsoft's products on you.

We agree on that. Unload your MSFT environment. Your costs will go down, your users will be happy. You will make money.

If anything this is another badge of shame Vista will have to wear around. Your top OEM is selling Linux machines on the side and telling customers there will be problems if they try to upgrade. Not like the big one of '99. There's not enough in the geek production pipeline this time and talent in formerly developing markets are managing to stay employed right where they are. IT was so out of favor as a career choice five years ago that some colleges started scaling back their IT programs. Not only a fall off in production but many schools scrapped their production capacity.

Even if they could get their IT programs back online tomorrow and overcome the still persistent perception that IT is a career where your job will be outsourced, it would still be five years before capacity caught up with demand.

In fact, in the short term, the geek world may be flush with opportunity. The hot growth markets are overseas. They started vacuuming up some of the excess of world IT talent, which I believe is what contributed to the sudden shortage here.

I still remember stuffy managers looking at a proposal and snuffing that they could outsource the development for half the cost. Fast forward a couple years...got a call from a tech company in town this am offering to contract all the hours I can spare them at a premium rate. Who's laughing now, Mr. Poopy Pants?
