Hey, the slashdot and surrounding community are a pretty close-knit bunch. Emmett has been involved in that community longer than he's been at Slashdot.Freaking out over this minor Interhack association is kinda dumb. I think attacking Emmett's journalistic integrity is immature. I, personally really enjoy Emmett's *original* work here on slashdot. I think he brings a lot to slashdot and it's been a much better place since he's been on board.
Rock on, Emmett! Keep up the great work!:)
Your friend,
is that it doesn't show us a clear picture at all. It quotes a group of teenage girls who say they don't want to pursue *computer* careers. It negates to tell us exactly what careers these girls are pursuing. A few years ago female law students outnumbered male law students, and there have been increases in females entering the medical profession. Lawyers, doctors, scientists, and researchers are just as geeky as IT workers, IMHO. Frankly I don't think articles such as this one helps shed light on any of this.It offers little solutions to the problem of marketing IT to teenage girls.
Here is an article that helps to illuminate who the majority of net user are.http://www.mercurycenter.com/svtech/computing/ docs/044660.htm
I've been curious, we all know that slashdot itself it operated 100% by men, and the male commenters far outnumber the female commenters. I wonder what the ratio is for those with accounts here. Why are there so few female role models in the OpenSource community?
for us multimedia types. I'd love to do quicktime audio and video, and quicktimeVR in my comic. Presently it really sucks that Linux AY2Kers wouldn't be able to view it.
I signed the petition, and I hope that they, at the very least make Quicktime available to Linux users, but it would be even better if they released an Open Source QuickTime client for Linux, IMHO.
For the past few months I've been reading Slashdot's front page and avoiding reading the comments because of the idiots who post petrified crap here. (BTW, you can thank me for being a part of the clean-up at Segfault):-)
For the first time in about 2 months I checked out the comments here because I've been getting a ton of email to check out this story. I'm furious at the sheer amount of the stone posts, I just don't think the moderation is clearing them out fast enough. I think Slashdot should ban the IPs of these abusers, because in essence if you just leave them to post, you're pushing away the many intelligent women who would like to be a part of this community, including myself.
These petrified posts, assault women, they're cleary mysogynist. I think the intent is to drive away women. It's a good way to turn/. into a woman-hating boy's club. It's a real shame, because I know the women that would like to contribute here, I believe/. is suffering from their absence.
I understand that freedom of speech is important, but wouldn't you want IPs to be banned if they spewed racist hate? Why does/. allow women to be raped literally here, like someone did to me on my interview page?
I think it would be great to hear Debbie's story about why she picked you, and why geeks are great partners. Perhaps she could write an addition to this story giving geek guys and girls some insight?
I have to agree with Roblimo, I took it as a joke, not seriously at all.:) It was especially funny, how everyone got far more excited and exhuberant when the topic turned to MODEMS!:D
I don't think there's anything to get worked up over. If you're a female interested in medicine, CS, astronomy, whatever geeky career, and you have the drive, you'll do it no matter what.
I'm really sick of the media buzz-word of the year, "mentor". Who says if you're female you should have female mentors?
Whenever I've had the pleasure of working with male geeks, I learned tons, shared my skills, and had a great time. I really don't see why people think guys are so intimidating.
BTW, I've attended some techie-girl clubs... they suck! They're so pre-occupied in female-empowerment that actual geeking-out and teaching never comes up.
I remember that moon thing! It was a private school for boys in the UK, and they were raising funds. I don't know how they got away with it, the "who are you to sell the moon?" question. However, they would give you a fancy certificate for $20.

just for you... watch for it tomorrow, possibly in the QuickPoll. :)
Calling all RL TTBs (Pyr, Miz, Wolf, Nancy, just to name a few), Kick Math Butt, babes! :-)

Sorry about the fire, Hemos. This is very sad news, and thankfully no one was hurt. Wish I could help.
Nitrozac
I was wondering... what's tucked away in your Y2K/general-apocalyptic emergency storehouse?
I'm pretty sure there's a book for writing Haiku in there, somewhere...
Nitrozac has a many meanings, mostly it sounds like an interesting form of medicaton ;)
I put this answer in for all the AY2Kers who enjoyed the what's the source code of your essence? QuickPoll.
This is why I love you geeks! I'm diggin' these decoding posts, :) Above and beyond, I'd say!
Here's some proof.
One thing's for sure, I'd *never* marry an Anonymous Coward! ;)
She sounds like a genius, where can I check out her stuff?
Ironically, I do live in Canada!
If you're having trouble getting to my main site today, I've posted up a mirror here. Thanks!
Here's a mirror site after-y2k.com, if you're having trouble with the main site.

Do you believe the nerve?! They didn't even mention my comic, After Y2K! ;-)
I think they look pretty good on those piles of bills and gold coins ;-) Well rested.
