Aside from the reduction in population, you would have a worse situation.
The right has been saying "the market will solve it", "drill, baby, drill", etc. The right has fought requiring anything to be more fuel efficient, less polluting. The right has fought looking at the problem or attempting to do anything about it. The right has been pretty consistent in denying that there is a problem. ( if you disagree with the above, tell me about stuff that is not outliers, policy advancements and voting records made by the right to help and not hinder )
You would have dirtier industry, dirtier cars, more pollution in the air, ground and waters.
So, to add to the notion that "gas the left" is unfeeling, uncaring and atrocious, actually carrying it out would be a step in the wrong direction.
That is what auto makers have been saying since CAFE standards were a twinkle in someone's eye. From where I stand, it does not seem very true.
So many ideas have been investigated and used to increase power, fuel efficiency and reduce emissions. Variable valve timing and valve lift is old school now. We have gone back to direct injection ( yeah, I know, so very new. Did you know 1940's airplanes used it? ) Power recovery turbines, at the end of the mainstream use of piston engines in large aircraft, they would not only provide boost with the exhaust backpressure/flow, but they would extract more work from it, and put the work into the crank shaft. Fragile as heck in the 40's. Today? Picking up the ideas behind how diesels work to start introducing HCCI like 'stuff' in gasoline powered engines. Camless valve trains seem to be getting close to realizable. Sleeve valve engines would be realizable, if poppet valves prove troublesome. 5 stroke engines ( injecting water or other "stuff" to add additional work stroke(s), recover more work from the combustion heat ) Going to a super charged, valved 2 stroke engine does not seem to get much love, everyone is hung up on the 2 stroke exhaust pipe. Stop looking at it as a standard 2 stroke, look at it as a 4 stroke, but you are removing strokes, not using an intake stroke, but pushing the air in, but not from the crank case. Engine weight per unit of power would be lower, using less space and fuel to move the vehicle. Combustion temperature control is currently a hot topic. Cant get too hot, or your oxides of nitrogen get out of hand. But, figure out a way to get ( start with reducing ) the nitrogen in the cylinder to begin with. No, don't lug around oxygen tanks, bad idea, find another way to keep the nitrogen out. Chemical/physical Then you can go as high as you want on temperature ( use a ceramic block/heads, use the heat in the block/heads in either a steam or thermo-electric system ) Seems like you could loose the alternator, generate the electricity from the heat directly. See also power recovery and 5 stroke concepts as well. Just dont touch it!
I can only speak for myself, but the UI in Win10 is not the main objection
Not being able to manage when updates are applied Telemetry
These are my issues.
I understand that MS changes the UI so that people do not wonder why they are spending money on an update. What I don't understand is why people fall for that.
"if Rolex posts in ad in The Economist, are they discriminating against non-white folks"
No, they are discriminating against the "less wealthy". Understood that many whites are wealthy, but many many more whites are "less wealthy". Further there is a distribution within non-whites of wealthy, "less wealthy".
Lack of impulse control leads to poverty and prison. OK, now, as the nail sticking up the highest, explain "negative amounts of impulse control" Trump. And he has not learned any, has he.
If your theory was correct, he would be the poorest of the poor. He has connections and started with money and has had a lot of luck. Lack of impulse control is a negative thing. Lack of opportunity ( structural issues ), parents, luck, so many things weigh in. But, in order to feel OK about your luck/advantages/fortune/etc, you have to make it "their fault".
The Jail requires a Power of Attorney document issued/guaranteed/backed by a Surety that is basically an insurance policy against the defendant's court attendance. That policy has a premium that needs to be paid. That or ( I think ) place sufficient money with the court(s)/jails(s) as guarantee of payment.
The bonding organization has to pay staff for manning the storefront. The storefront has a rental cost associated, and the storefront needs to be near the Jails. Many defendants walk from the Jail to the bonding org storefront to sign documents, get their picture taken, etc after they are released. You generally want 24 hour, 7 days a week coverage, and 2 staff minimum during peak hours, so you have someone at the storefront and another to run documents to the Jail to seek release. The courts and jails do not allow any electronic document service.
The bail organization must register their operations and rate structures with the Department of Insurance in the state they operate in. The staff that handle working with defendants directly and with running documents to the jail must be individually licensed with the Department of Insurance. There are fees associated with maintaining these licenses.
There is a requirement for staff to manage monitoring the defendant's court attendance ( and other court related correspondence/activity/tasks ), and staff to find and return to the court system any defendants that do not make their court dates ( intentionally or otherwise ). A note, there are some individuals who do bail bonding services, the may not have all the features from above, but if they dont, their costs are probably higher, not lower, ultimately, because if you are not managing the defendants that skip, your Surety Premium costs will be higher. Or if the bail individual has money on deposit with the courts, the full penal amount will be subtracted from that account any time a defendant skips and is not returned to the court within the forfeiture period.
There is more, but the above indicates some of the costs involved.
I started as a programmer on this back in 2005, at the time I recall thinking "I better find another place to land after this, there isn't more than 2 years work here". 13 years later, with a staff of 4 working with me, we still have lots to do... As with just about anything, there is more than meets the eye.
The company I work for does not do business in Indiana. I looked at the gov website, they only mention that the premium rates must be filed with the Department of Insurance. I did find this:
And it says that premium rates can be 8%, but are generally 10 to 15% If the full penal amount was 3,000, it sounds like you should have been charged 300 to 450 in premium. The code I read did say that premiums must be paid in full, establishing a payment plan is not allowed in Indiana. I wonder if the penal amount was 30,000, and the premium was 3,000 ( assuming 10%, juggle the numbers for other percentages as needed ), and they didnt do a good job of educating you on the difference between the two numbers.
The premium amount is not refundable, the concept being that the bail organization, which is separate from the court system and law enforcement, secured your release, and has earned the premium. If law enforcement was mistaken or malicious in arresting you, that is bad for mistaken and flat out wrong for malice, but the bail organization had no part in that, and are providing a service, as awful as it would be to have to pay to be out of jail for those cases.
A, Prison is like Jail, but they are not the same. Generally, Prison is where you go after conviction. Jail is where you are, sometimes, while waiting for the courts to process you thru their system to determine guilt or innocence.
B, Bail is ensuring that people stay engaged with the court system, should the court decide that the defendant could be allowed out of jail until the verdict is determined for their case. Unfortunately, money is just such a universal incentive, so it is used. Bail is set as a penal amount. The bail bonds entity collects a fee ( usually regulated by the department of insurance in the state of the court ) for the service of agreeing to make certain that the defendant will respect the court's requirements. There is a surprising amount of work involved. And if the defendant skips, the court comes after the bondsman for the full penal amount.
C, Yes, you are in prison if you have a conviction, bail does not apply here.
D, It would be the court system that determines if you are too dangerous or too large a flight risk. They determine if bail will be allowed, and if it is, what the amount will be.
Flight risk: The Bail amount is set by the Court System, not by the Bail Bonds company. The judge is responsible for deciding if bail is to be allowed, and what amount it will be set at.
Forcing bail: I dont think people should be forced to put up bail, it should be their decision ( assuming they have the option and the resources to exercise the option ).
I expressed an opinion, I am not seeing how that equates to "making my opinion more important".
In "fixing" my statement to point out that what I wrote [ my opinion ] didn't you denigrate me and seek to make your opinion more important? And didnt that reply imply that the opinion that there people who sought more than needed was incorrect?
How much power should peple have, then? Do we have a good system that treats all with something approaching fairness, dignity and respect? Or do we have abuse?
So, the question is, how do we get to this capitalist nirvana?
It is the same story any utopia. Human nature gets in the way. Many things could work, if people would cooperate. But, we have human nature intervening, people grabbing power and more than they need and being jerks to others. It is the same here, you cant get over the hump very easily, and there are always those who want power, things, control, and will abuse your ideal utopia.
It requires work. Hard work, by all of us, to watch, think, and not let things go down the slippery slope. We have not done a very good job of that, have we?
In terms of purchasing different levels of services ( line speed ) sure, it seems an OK analogy.
If you try to argue that paid prioritization is OK based on this, I would disagree. The internet is a system where people paid to enter/exit. Vendors pay to enter to deliver their goods, customers paid to request and receive these goods ( exiting ).
Paid Prioritization is where the vendor I ordered goods from is delayed in delivering the goods I ordered, despite the fact that road speeds would support earlier delivery, in order to afford my exit toll manager the ability to charge not only me, but the vendor a toll, for the same delivery.
If some guy where to stand on a road with a gun and demand tolls based on access, he would be headed for jail. "they own the pipes" is not convincing, I am paying for the use of the pipes, the bits are mine, dont touch them.
It sounds like they are all "pre" settings, where I would have to choose beforehand to delay updates a set amount.
I am partial to the Windows 7 method, it tells me there are updates available and downloaded. If the coast is clear, I start the update. If not, it reminds me, and I take care of them when convenient to me. It requires diligence on my part, I have to make sure to set the time aside, and not let them sit too long.
Stop going to the dealership. ( In the BMW enthusiast websites I read when I need to do something to my BMW, they refer to them as "stealerships". ) Find a good independent shop. Or do the work yourself
I will go against the grain on this, there are several posts bashing your opinion, but I support it.
I have purchased two used BMWs so far, a 1992 525 and a 2000 328. For the most part, I do the work on them myself, and they have not been more trouble than the other cars in my family fleet. There is a large enthusiast community around these cars, when I need to fix or upgrade something, I usually have an assortment of text and video how to articles to guide me. The Toyota and Hyundai cars in my fleet, not so much. Some, but not nearly as much.
The cars drive beautifully and have been good on reliability. Manual transmissions are generally available, and they are rear wheel drive, both of which are positive in my book.
Note, I would hesitate to buy something much more modern than what I have now, I see the "weld the hood shut" efforts BMW seems to be pushing into their cars.
That said, I think the idea of sweating 80/year for something they add no value to and costs them nothing over what they insert to ensure they can take the 80/year is not something I find attractive. I find the whole Microsoft/Apple/Google relationships with car manufacturers repugnant. I dont want Ford ( 2013 Mustang I had the use of, could not get it to pair with my android phone. I am sure it was the usual "if we make it inoperable with other choices, the customer will chose Microsoft" view. ) to decide I will have Microsoft stuff in my car, nor BMW to decide that Apple is appropriate. I want to decide that for myself.
Another point I had meant to make on the manual updates.
If you allow Microsoft to schedule it, you could have your whole department/office/ set of machines bricked in one swell foop.
If you do them manually, you can
A, wait a few days, see if any of the bright eye'd and bushy tailed "gonna do it, gotta have it" group have blazed that trail and reported ( or not ) problems
( kinda like with this update set ). ( and yes, you need to assess the risk, if needed you can elect to update immediately )
B, perform the update set on a subset of your machines, take a backup before you apply, otherwise mitigate your risk.
