    Agreed.

    It sounds like RMS is butthurt that GCC is losing popularity ?

    Choice for the consumer is good.

    In an ideal world we would all have the source for every program so we can diagnose it.
    In an ideal world we would only _need_ 1 compiler instead of everyone wasting man-years re-inventing yet another "wheel".

    I deeply admire anyone who can remain committed to taking their ideology to an extreme by living it. However, such ideology is not appreciated, or understand by the majority. There are more "practical" and "pragmatic" sacrifices that sometimes must be made. Not everyone values Freedom the same way. :-( I'm sure Richard understands that some are willing to trade Freedom for Convenience. And his warning will probably be hauntingly true years down the road. Having someone who is able to look at the "bigger" picture must seem like a lonely, and unpopular job, but I am glad we have someone who does that.

    However, taking a step back, what are _all_ the reasons that people are switching over to LLVM in the first place?

    - Is part of the bigger picture is that GCC doesn't make it easy to embed into an IDE?
    - If LLVM is "cleaner" under the hood so you don't need to be a compiler expert to modify / fix it, shouldn't that be a wake up call for GCC to clean up the code + architecture ?
    - If I want to just make a front-end for a new (programming) language why is it easier with LLVM then with GCC ?

    What are the fundamental reasons (aside from licensing issues) that Apple switched from GCC to LLVM, and others?

    A woman want you to spend time with them doing pointless shit like shopping for hours on end, gardening for hours, etc, or whatever her hobby is. She just wants you to spend time with her. Yes, we know you could optimize shopping via in--n-out-bam in 5 minutes. She doesn't care and thinks you're missing the point (journey). You think she's missing point (goal). Two diametrically opposed unspoken goals which usually ends up in an argument. Expectations are completely out of sync.

    ** Old engineer joke

    An architect, an artist and an engineer were discussing whether it was better to spend time with the wife or a mistress. The architect said he enjoyed time with his wife, building a solid foundation for an enduring relationship. The artist said he enjoyed time with his mistress, because of the passion and mystery he found there.

    The engineer said, "I like both."

    "Both?" they asked.

    Engineer: "Yeah. If you have a wife and a mistress, they will each assume you are spending time with the other woman, and you can go to the lab and get some work done."

  25. Previous WebGL work-around ... on Glyphy: High Quality Glyph Rendering Using OpenGL ES2 Shaders · · Score: 2

    I ran into font edges with fringes and halos 2 years back when trying to render an 8-bit luminance font with an arbitrary user specified color. (Blue was the worst offender for fringes.)

    I wasn't aware of the Valve's clever SDF solution at the time so I used a different 3-fold solution:

    * Generate the texture font atlas offline using custom code + FreeType2
    Each font is "natively" exported at various sizes from 8 px up to 72 px.

    * Use pre-multiplied alpha blending for rendering instead of the standard alpha blending
                    gl.enable( gl.BLEND );
                    gl.blendFunc( gl.ONE, gl.ONE_MINUS_SRC_ALPHA );

    * Fix the fragment shader to use pre-multiplied alpha:

    uniform lowp vec4 uvColor ;
    uniform sampler2D utDiffuse;
    varying mediump vec3 vvTexCoord;
    void main() {
            mediump vec2 st = vec2( vvTexCoord.x, vvTexCoord.y );
            lowp vec4 texel = texture2D( utDiffuse, st );
            lowp float font = texel.a;
            lowp float fade = vvTexCoord.z;
            lowp float premultiply = uvColor.a;
            gl_FragColor = uvColor * font * fade * premultiply;
    }

    We also pass in vertex alpha to allow each rendered font to "fade out to nothing" hence the non obvious "fade = vvTexCoord.z".

    Since the designers aren't doing arbitrary rotations nor scaling our solution looks great.

    My boss sent me a link to this article just after I saw it so looks like I'm off to research how easy / hard using SDF is into our WebGL font rendering system. :-)
