> , but have a way for the client to connect to it, since the client has no method of choosing to connect somewhere else.
With UO, it was trivial to tell the client which logon server to connect to.
Even if you can't do it with EQ, you can still setup your hosts file to not have EQ go wandering across the inet for a connection. (Good 'ole ip masqeraiding and NAT:)
Writing a dedicated server is WAY easier then writing a GRAPHICAL client. If you have worked in the game industry you would know this.
Maybe I'll use a better analogy that more/.'ers will understand. How many people do you see writing new and innovative GUI's for Linux? Or how many programmers do you see creating a graphical front end for their programs? Because a command line program is easier to get done.
Look, it takes a team of 10 to 30 people OVER a YEAR to write a game. Even up to 2 years of your life! The *basic* networking code can be done in a few weeks (allthough it is usually spread out over a few months for tweaking: mostly to deal with lag, and network performance.)
There is a reason games take 1.5 years and cost a few million dollars to produce: Because they are *BIG* projects. You need programmers. You need artists. You need musicians. Here's the perfect example, open source even! See World Forge for how they are progressing.
But dont' just take my word for it. I'm just a 3d graphics programer. Talk to other game developers.
> Would you care to explain how it is that the PPC Linux developers are able to develop an OS for these machines for which specs are not available?
If you read Be OS Bible, Be explains that they didn't think it would be nice to support hardware that Apple has refused to give them help with.
Is it an excuse? Maybe, maybe not. Who cares, Intel hardware is cheaper anyways;-)

If you want to see a BAD console game, go check out Warcraft for the PSX. The controls are terrible. That type of game (RTS) is WAY better on PC's. Which leads me to my point:
Didn't ANYONE read the strengths and weakness of PC's and Consoles?
PC's aren't just going to go away and die. Sure game budgets may be getting out of hand (5 - 10 million) but the movie industry went through the same thing after they realized all those special effects can't turn a bad movie into a good one, only make a good one better. (i.e. Waterworld, and Blair Witch)
Consoles excel at where time is limited. You just jump right and you're playing. But they can't match the depth of customization that PC's have had for years. Look what kept Doom and Quake around ALL these years: user-mods.
So the next time, someone spouts off "consoles will own pc's", or "console games blow" tell them to THINK about what the PC's and Consoles are BOTH _good_ and _bad_ at.
But what do I know, I'm just a 3d game programmer...

Not true. It depends on HOW BIG you are. If you are a small shop with only one computer, then either one is true.;-)

I would say most geeks (minus the zealots) DO acknowledge that. The problem is M$ believes that EVERYONE should ONLY run their OS, even when they themselves don't. pot, kettle, black. That is what gets people upset.
Travelling is a RIGHT, Driving is a privilege. You DON'T need a license to travel. I travel without one, and have yet to be given a ticket for speeding or for driving without a license.
Speeding is NOT a crime, UNLESS you went to the government asking for permission (DRIVER'S LICENSE) to use their property (REGISTERED VEHICLE.) If you don't want to be harassed by the good law officers, you can get an International Driver's Permit, which is valid in over 200 countries. No Socialist Slave Number is required.

Oh really?
You work for 8 hours, and you get little pieces of paper in exchange. So are you saying "you're time" is bad? (You own your time, and you exchange it for money, hence the contract of a "job)
Because *that* is what money is: It is a compression of time that has a value.
A friend of mine uses the Windows programs Blackice and ZoneAlarm but I'm curious as what (preferably free) programs one can use to detect port scans and intruders under Linux and BSD?
I have heard of Tripwire. Does any one have any experience running that one?
You might also want to mention "if you can work at home, you can free up a lap computer for another student."
Also, don't forgot to do a build on the windows machine to verify that you haven't made any programming assumptions while you are coding on linux. i.e. Basically double-check your code is portable before handing in your assignment:)
He was CONSTANTLY allways talking, and then would e-bolt guild members when he felt like it. (Even though we knew he required attention, it was very difficult to do guild events / play the game since he was allways being a distraction.)
The game, unfortunately, did nothing to help him. It only brought the problem out even more, since there was always people around.
Now, action console games, might have helped, but any game that allows for multiple player interaction, be it FPSs or MMPPRPGs wouldn't be a good choice.

Not true. Just crackling, and no volume control (volume is allways loud, no matter what the slider is set at) You can check the creative labs news server, for news on the SB Live and SMP. The fixed driver won't be out till october.
There is a utility you can use to set the affinity of the sound driver. It has helped a few people.
Because their inline assembly (aka #pragma aux ) was perfect; bar none. You could specify which registers to pass data in/out of, which registers you would use, AND still have get FULL optimizations (Most compilers will disable optimizations if you put ANY asm inside C funcs.)
For game development back in 95, it was the way to go: Dead-easy flat-protected mode, a great optimizer, mono/hercules debugging suppport.

Where's Carmack to speak up when you need him?
I agree.
Never mind the fact that you NEED to OWN a copy of EQ before you can even play on the emulated server.
There is no theft of service going on here.
> It isn't stealing service, it is providing a competing service.
.. providing a service at a significantly lower price (since the price they "charge" is $0.)
One *might* call it "dumping"
At least they aren't doing it for money, so I don't see how anything they are doing is illegal.

If you mean compared to 2 pci video cards, then yes.
I have 2 video cards (pci+agp) running win2k and the setup rocks. Compiler on one window, help docs on other.
Are there any PCI GeForce 2 cards (w/ 32 or 64 megs) out there?

Money is an inanimate object. It is neither good nor bad.
