At least here in the end they would look at what possessions you had, take your money from the bank if you have any or sell your house / whatever and get the money that way.
I doubt you will have much of an option not to get shafted so to speak.
I'm well aware of the benefits of Jabber, but regular people don't care if I'm the only one using jabber but all their friends use MSN and everything works with it.
An eventual future where everyone use XMPP would be nice, but that's not the case for now and will probably not be for the next 3-4 years at least, and probably 5+ if at any time.
So for most people it would probably be more like they can use microsofts messenger now, and everything works, or install an additional one to add me on jabber, which they are probably quite unwilling to.
heh, actually she even told me to install it so we could use it for webcam! Though she's made it pretty clear that, uhm, I don't remember, in some way she didn't liked me (obviously..) in the mail before so I told her I thought we was done talking to each other and how I didn't see the purpose in that (and that I couldn't use the application but how cool it was with a girl using SIP and Jabber instead of MSN...)
I know it sounds way weird, both sip and jabber and then webcam as well? Maybe it was a transvestite or acne teen with girl account:D
Gtalk don't do video, it does audio, however there are only a very limited amount of clients which supports the audio part. For instance Pidgin and Adium don't*.
I appologise if I missread/missunderstood if you where talking about running a server by oneself.
* Sure it was nice to see atleast miranda there, but well, until most / enough clients support it it won't help much and voice isn't enough, most people use skype/teamspeak/ventrilo for voice only anyway
But webcam/voip have always been of very low priority by the developers of pidgin/libpurple and therefor adium is lacking to (since it use their libs.)
Yeah because you can't talk with people using MSN, ICQ, so on so on as long as they have an MSN, ICQ-compatible client and an account for that..
Atleast ICQ is better than MSN, and russian (?) QIP supports both ICQ and Jabber so that makes it easier for the russians which want both.
I'd like to try to convince people to use XMPP but as long as it don't support voice and webcam there is no reason to even try. There must be a couple of clients which does it in the same way first.
I'd prefer if people used SIP I guess if it wasn't because people have a hard time getting it to work behind firewalls.
I was given a link to http://www.eyeballchat.com/ from a GIRL a day or so ago and that seems to be a SIP + XMPP client in one package, and also got past firewalls, but sadly it's Windows only so I haven't tried it:(
I don't say I've got a life, also I didn't read it more than to look for earlier complaints on the same thing so I could reply in that part of the thread.
But Slashdot reaches a lot of people, how many care about that he will buy a new PC for games? Big deal? Most important information of the day?
I'd guess much more interesting stories never reaches the front page.
I may have been acceptable if he was building a huge data center or very small server system or something such with a little more exotic hardware, BUT A FUCKING DESKTOP PC!?!
Yes I did notice it, but I don't want to see posts like "which coffee should I drink this morning?" on the front page. Ok if people ask work or educational advices in a non-general maner but please don't ask what browser to install, if blue is better than brown and such.
Who the fuck gives a shit about this guy buying a new gaming PC? He can't ask for good prices somewhere else? Shall everyone who wants to get a new system have their story on Slashdots front page?
I think it's ok to discuss even if it's rather off topic in threads, if people want to discuss it it's ok. But well, please keep some standard on what is posted on the front page at least. That someone want to buy a new gaming PC is not a news item, maybe I should post a news item asking for advices what underwear to get when you feel big enough to leave those mickey mouse pants your mother got you 15 years ago. Though I do understand Slashdot would be a bad forum for such a question since most people wouldn't know, it's better for PC advices..
Also, if newegg with 9.5% taxes still is cheaper, BUY! If newegg with 9.5% taxes cost more than some alternative, DONT BUY!
I don't know but I'd thought whatever codecs was supported by your regular video player to run in the browser as well. I have perian and/or something else installed on my mac and can play most things, so I'd expect everything to work, macs can play H.264 with no additional codecs I believe so no problem there. http://perian.org/
And maybe not even then since people upgrade slowly.
But at least they could give us an option, like if you have a youtube account you select if you want videos delivered thru embedded html 5 video or as flash video.
Game trailers already let you choose between download as quicktime and wmv (and maybe stream videos as flash to), so embedded video as yet another option wouldn't be weird there either.
And if you create a new site (like your own southpark site (bad example, your own user created files would be better)) I'd guess it's ok to choose html 5 video and just look the idiots out / tell them to switch browser.
Personally I'd have no issues with doing that and let my CSS be broken and look like shit in IE.
Maybe, and I know it can be used for other things, but I only have a use for and need / want flash for watching videos. Or well, I don't want it but I'm forced to. If it wasn't for videos delivered in flash I'd probably not have it installed, and even if I had it installed it would probably consume much less computer resources since not all videos would use flash.
That Microsoft is slowest to implement a new standard isn't that unheard of, and I don't care, suck that they destroy it all for the rest of us.
Regarding animations, audios and shit I hate all webpages which are designed in flash, such as Blizzards Diablo III page for instance. I don't want to have to go thru the shitty user interfaces and time consuming animations and disabled browsing functionality.
Wtf? Great news!! No idea who this Soulskill is either.
Can't people take shit like this on forums or just ask their friends if they have any? May I suggest the store which is cheapest for the items you want?
Boho, 9.5% sales tax, what to do what to do? Ask millions of people on Slashdot!
If I'd be given the option to buy a Dell instead of this Macbook Pro and still run the OS 100% working and legal I'd for sure take the Dell for amount of options and price.
They probably have flash in them. And the nice thing is that finally Chromes activity manager will tell everyone how much it suck.
Personally I'd take chromes approach over Safari any day of the week, safari always ends up using 1GB of my ram so I ran out of my 2 GB and then even if I close lots of tabs and windows I still remain in the same situation, safari with no windows and 6-700 MB memory usage isn't unusual.
How very insightful of you, now all you need to do is to break one milky way open and look for any bubbles in it, if you find one tilt the bar so the bubbles interior don't get any light and take a photograph, send your milky way black hole to nasa.
I can do science me!

Well if you don't want to have it to look videos do you really need flash at all? Sure game trailers, southpark studios and the occasional game website use flash for some retarded reason. Why not just host quicktime videos or something? I hate flash.
Blue? Toilet seat ibooks and CRT-imacs? I guess fisher price was their inspiration, and later on Microsoft took that/Lego Duplo for their XP.

The simple solution would be to just uninstall flash and run a filtering proxy, or if it's possible make a rule in the proxy to block all swf except ones from youtube.

It does use everything my 2.2GHz C2D, 2GB ram macbook pro can deliver as well.
Funny with the page which tell about how memory gets fragmented and not everything comes back, with Safari it's even worse, if you run out of ram and close all your tabs it may actually use MORE memory than before. Impressive, Apple rock..
I have great confident in their browser, I can accept that things use much RAM, RAM is cheap and I can buy more, I don't want to accept memory leaks though since then it doesn't matter how much RAM I have because sooner or later I will run out of it anyway.
I just wonder if they will get rid of undo between tabs / after moving to another page, I like that feature, at least if they could save text areas.
At least here in the end they would look at what possessions you had, take your money from the bank if you have any or sell your house / whatever and get the money that way.

Cool, I wonder if the adium people think it's to much work to use their implementation, I guess it may be as much changes as writing it yourself =P
http://www.eyeball.com/products/messenger.html
I don't know if there is any difference since I've not used the apps. But eventually there are so I better mention it.
Is it that simple? Will that make it go away? You won't just get jailed and still have to pay it (and maybe much more?)
But yes, one would hope they would find it unreasonable themself and not charge it.

How hard can it be?
Valid for downloaded videos in say xvid format but if it was h.264 or regular mpeg II I doubt many people would lack the codec?
Also flash don't come pre-installed with the OS either, and they have managed to install that ..
Just help them to get the codecs required. http://slashdot.org/comments.pl?sid=955417&cid=24906361

For a Windows machine you can installed something like super player and be done with it:

I really hate flash.
Great! Now all of Opera, Safari and Firefox support the video element, can we please kill flash already?
I doubt youtube, game trailers, southpark studios and friends will demand this real soon now because people in general suck but I can wish can't I?
Wtf? Great news!! No idea who this Soulskill is either.
