Perhaps these are the cost to post to tier 1 journals.
But in my experience it came down to finding the people who really were invested and excited in the research. (And professors who were excited about mentoring ) And the institutions that had the leadership that could see the benefits of, and be willing to employ programmers to create the simulations and programs, not costly infrastructure, then amazing studies and wonderful papers were produced for next to nothing.
Absolutely!
There are in fact many talented engineers, men and women who put up with below market pay and benefits, insecure working environment and a country full of fools who villainize (demonize) public employees.
If you are lucky enough to know one, ask them why.
After working for 13 years creating course and resources for higher educations, this is what professors and instructors are coming to, and they are themselves partially to blame as well.
First, it is the struggle to let them know that there is value in online and computerized education. Mainly doing what the professor can't or doesn't have the time to do. Example, the social sciences have lost all funding for real lab experiments. These are easily reproduced virtually where student can "play" with the outcomes over and over and over again.
Second. The university and college administration panics and just throws money at a problem they don't even understand. Lets get WebCT, Blackboard, any CMS will do that will fix it!! Even the open source Moddle and Canvas are not the solution. As the professor in the article says, its only good for putting the syllabus online. What they aren't getting is the that with the loss of a "real" lecturer in front of the class every day you need to hand craft the course so you keep what the instructor does best. Years of experience in teaching can be captured and served to student but not by canned text lectures, and multiple choice exams. Hand crafting(programming) virtual labs, game and simulation, videos with branching into subsets and details, links to other lectures, texts and classes that give different prospective.
Until admins and professors are educated themselves and running universities like a business is recognized as the fallacy that is, there is little hope that real online education will develop beyond the cave drawings that we have now.
There should be an additional $0.11 tax added to every pizza for the extra health care needed to treat all the fat geeks! Wait... what? Oh crap, am I that fat?
Absolutely, I don't even mind letting the professors make money on the book, or the departments, colleges and universities. The mark up the publishers make on each and every books is so So SO great that even with a little money going to the academic source, would still mean great savings to students.
Yeah strange the conclusion they quickly jump to is: give more immunizations, not anything about "effectiveness" of the vaccine itself, or lets do some science and find out why. I guess when you let business interests run medicine, blah blah blah
Thank you! Ditto. I'm still trying to get legally purchased movies to run on my legally purchased equipment.
As the entertainment industry tries to completely control every aspect of their product and how consumers can use them, more and more star systems will slip through their grasp.
After watching Gov Perry's debating performances, Its clear his prays are so disjointed, inarticulate, pandering and down right silly that any Cloud-dwelling-Super-Being would be forced to curse his state with wildfires.
What really happens is they are saddle with tonnes of regulations (Safety-Sh*t Mostly), and constantly changing expectation and requirements from Congress and the President. Add the politicization of the agency so now there are more Admins/Managers then Engineers. But wait there is more: the fact that they can't (READ: CAN NOT) hold their contractor to timelines, deadlines, or even what the final product is, while still having to pay for overruns, redesigns and mistakes. ( I can see Lockheed running to their favorite bought-and-paid-for congressman now: "Big mean NASA wants us to deliver what we promised and what we were paid for, wah wah.")
NASA is far too valuable a resource to let Congress and the President have any say over it.
Its going to be individual authors who, get a far better deal selling their books through Amazon then they could have gotten with the established publishers.
the will start to think, hey, if I can get 50% with Amazon, far better then before, how much can I get if I do it myself? ( carry the one....) A LOT MORE.
Don't be a fool. It will be the Police Union that cries foul, when all the kids are let loose for long three day weekends. Imagine the trouble they are going to cause!
I memorized the 1st edition book. Too old to learn anymore or look things up.

But wouldn't the commerce clause come into play where currency, no tariffs and licenses carry across state borders?
Of course here in Utah we don't call it a 'tax.' Taxes are evil. Its a fee. And we are lucky to get a drink with any alcohol in it at all.
Oil Companies pay researchers to shut their mouths and sell them, their new discovery, where it will be hidden and never see the light of day.

Pretty sure the tunnel is full of Fire Ants and illegals bring drugs into the country.
Did this story start with the words: Texas Scientists? Ok, too easy, sorry Houston.

:( Mine either, Senator Hatch still can't define "due process."
Nothing to Hide, Nothing to Fear
I'd have liked to see more of the cars, little bit less of Tim.
thank you (where are my mod points when I need them)
Yes but the beast is "Right Handed", approach from the left.

So agree, this is WIN - WIN! I wish I was moding this week!
Not buying it. Tell me another one.
