    Sadly, I cannot resist the crack-like addiction to having, holding and cherishing the latest greatest kernel release. It's been that way for me since 2.0.10

    Even now, I have my box doing everything I need it to, and it does it well. So why do I tempt breakage by going to 2.4.8?

    +++

    Now for little Microsoft Rant.

    You see, I can't wait to move to a newer Linux kernel release. How many MS OS users can honestly tell me they enjoy moving to a new release of MS system software?

    With Linux, nobody is puting a gun to my head and forcing me to make this upgrade, nobody is telling me "Update your system software for More Security! More Configurability! More Stability!".

    No, quite the opposite. The Linux kernel developers give me a gift every few months, "Here, lookut' we made. Give it a try if you want."

    Microsoft takes such a different, unfortunate attitude towards their system software evolution

    "Here, buy this new update or you will die. We cannot and will not be held responsible for any cancers, distended bowels, hypertension, or any other fate which might befall you if you do not upgrade"

    +++

    Such a pity that MS will never, ever, due to clauses in the EULA, face massive fines and class action lawsuits for the instability of their product (Specifically WIndows operatiting systems)

    If Toyota released a new Car which caught fire at every 5th stoplight, it'd be recalled, and Toyota would in the least settle some out of court cases to familys of burnt owners.

    MS has hundreds of these type of bugs. To think that the damage these faults cause is unlike the previous burning example, you're mistaken.

    Yet nothing happens? No Gov't investigation? I just don't get it.

    Hardware manf's should be held accountable for releasing faulty, or severely outdated or proprietary/standards-lacking equipment.

    I leave that last statement in because I despise win-modems :) .. a little unfair, yes.

    Just as hardware manf's should be accountable, as should Software manufacturers.

    Inherently faulty software should be replaced with an alternative, 3rd party or in-house, or money refunded.

    this would really prop up the reliability factor and quality control from our favorite software distributors.

    I realize there are a barrel full of arguments against this idea. For example, (and tell me if this doesn't sound familiar) Microsoft releases a new version of Win OS and it will only run on Pentium 1Gz with > 128 meg'o'ram. If a customer buys this OS and puts on his P 60, he's sh** out of luck. However, if he puts it on his snappy new PVIII 1.5 Ghz box, it HAS to work. M$ said it would. If it doesn't work, M$ is responsible.

    I have a 3 year old matrox in my mac, and it's drivers don't jive with OS9, so I get no hardware accel at all. In this case, tough titty for me. I'll just have to live with the old stuff. However, if I buy a NEW matrox, and NEW macOS, and they both are labeled "compatible", I should be able to reclaim my money (or damages) if the two don't work togther.

    ... just some ideas...

I like plugging quarters (1, not 4!), and playing a simple game like Galaga, or Gyruss, Missile Command, Super Zaxxon... I go to an arcade today, and get a headache from the lack of good "clean fun" type games, and the $1 or greater per-play price.

    I really wish I had the money, time & patience to get into this hobby of collecting old Arcade consoles. If anyone has any pointers on how to get started in this hobby, post a reply. I'd really like to get my hands on a Good Condition Gyruss box for under $300 :)
